I love credit cards so much! v6.0 - 2023 (see first page for add'l details)

Finally got a free cruise from Carnival! I am not seeing a match to Royal anymore though? There are some pretty cool cruises on there, but we will likely stick with Caribbean to avoid school since we have a school year trip planned for this year and next school year already. Anyone sail from Galveston- how big of a PITA is it to get their from the airport?

Churning wise- anyone get great value out of their Wyndham points?

Trip inspo- we have been doing every state park in our state this year. Thinking about venturing to conquer all the major national parks next (not in a year though lol).

I did a trip report of our Disney cruise out of Galveston. The link is in my signature, the second post has an index to details about getting there. Our cruise was just a few weeks before the pandemic. I'd definitely sail out of Galveston again.

I got my new passport around May 20 and my old one was included with it. It was shipped either UPS or FedEx, can't remember, but not USPS so maybe that's why? My daughter's renewal came in Dec. and the old one a week or so later in Jan.
Thanks! I didn't do expedited, so mine just came USPS. From their website, it says it can take up to 8 weeks to receive back the old passport, but I assumed that was a really long quoted time frame. If I get it back in a week or two like you did with your daughter's, that would be great!

How are you all handling this air quality mess coming down from the Canadian wildfires? It's been 250s ish here in the very unhealthy or unhealhy range. Haven't walked the dogs in days because of their already compromised breathing (Bostons and Frenchtons). Seems like it should improve some over the next few days.
My mom is complaining a lot, she has COPD and is on oxygen all the time. I took our air purifier to her house for her. It was probably worsened at her house as my sister and I have been cleaning out moms attic this week, lots of dust stirred up too.
The air was noticeably bad here (Chicago area) on Tuesday, seemed better yesterday but yuck again today. I'm hoping predicted t-storms help clear some of the smoke. I have limited DS's outside workouts. Thankfully soccer season is over. I know many local park districts have been canceling event like swim meets. We don't walk our dogs, they have free run of a fenced yard and are in and out all day. They seem to be unbothered but I don't leave them out for long periods.

I think my daughter’s came two weeks ago and the old one hasn’t been sent back. Mine should be in my mailbox but I’m realizing my name change document probably won’t be with it. I guess I should go to the county courthouse and get another copy because I have a check I cannot cash because my mom wrote it out to me with my new old name but my bank still has my married name on my account.

IHG points+cash booking..... app says if cancelled, full amount is refunded in points, is that true, how does that work?
When you do a points plus cash booking, you are essentially buying points at something like .006 each. Points purchases are final. So let's say the points booking is 30k pts + $50, you're essentially buying 8,333 points or so (at roughly .006 each) for the $50. When you cancel, they won't refund you $50, they'll refund you 38,333 points.

Everyone needs to chase what works for them. Hyatt sounds lovely to me- but they aren’t most places I travel so #Bonvoyed it is. At the end of the day it’s a place to lay your head where you hopefully won’t get robbed/dead. Anything beyond that is a plus!
Great advice. I Love hearing about everyone’s travels. I had the Hyatt card for a year, used the sub on a nice property in Arizona but the FNC expired because I couldn’t travel. I looked ahead at my plans and no hyatts where I am planning so I cancelled that one. I’ve had better luck with IHG and Marriott where I’m going. I haven‘t even gone after the Hilton Biz since I have plenty of IHG and Marriott FNCs.

typing this as I am happy my next two nights in Banff are in a hotel with an elevator and AC (I have low standards). The prior 6 nights were 2nd floor walkups without AC. AC shouldnt be a problem but I’ve hit a heat wave, although it does cool off at night. But the views and wildlife made up for it!

Rating around 170 this evening was enough for our concert at Wolf Trap (Robert Plant & Alison Krauss) to be postponed until 2024. They waited until 5:15 to call it, we were on our way to our pre-show dinner. I get them not wanting to sing in bad air, but they could have decided sooner!

We had the same experience with Hyatt, they just aren't where we want to go and we had some issues at the few properties we did stay in. (they actually refunded our points twice at 2 different properties so I guess we technically got a good value out of that SUB with some free nights lol).

Hilton is our go to, and we are new to IHG. Thinking Bonvoy will be our path down the line but planning on getting more use of IHG first.

Okay I'm finally looking at my free cruise offers. I have one on hold w/ Carnival for my Spring Break next year. It's an 8 day, going from Miami to San Juan, St. Thomas, St. Martin, and somewhere else. It would be me and my 14yo. Port/Fees are $325. I know Carnival is the Spirit of the water...you know I love Spirit though (because it's free). I'll likely have to book our flights as non-rev over holidays is hard. Do you think it's worth it? The reviews of the ship say it's pretty old. I have only done 1 cruise...it was for the Millenium and on Carnival...on a super old ship back then, LOL. I'm pretty sure my son won't care too much. But then again, IDK.

The other thing is, my Spring Break is like 3 days after we get back from Ireland....I feel like that might be a lot to take on, LOL.

Would you spend $325 on a carnival cruise? Can I go from Ireland to the Caribbean 2 days later? LOL

Got my passport today (even a day earlier than Informed Delivery said, lol). The new plastic biometrics page is really cool!! How long has it been taking to receive the old, expired passports back?
I’m glad you got yours!

Today marked exactly 13 weeks since our passport applications were received and now the status finally shows them being shipped and that we should have them by Wednesday. I’m so relieved. This has been having me stressed for the last few weeks. We were originally quoted 10-13 weeks so they took every bit of that timeframe.

We are about to book ours now! Ours is giving a ton of summer options for 2024 so thats what we are looking at. $400-$450 for 2 people (but $200 OBC) for most of our options , but a huge difference in what the extra charge is to add our kids. 7 days on their brand new ship is the cheapest option amazingly ($900 for 4 people all fees/taxes included- still a great deal!). My husband is theeeeeee most indecisive person on the planet though so I am waiting on him to decide which one we take and I gave him a deadline of this weekend haha

How long is your cruise? $325 is less than you spend on food and drink for 5-7 days anywhere else! We've done a lot of different lines and IMO Carnival has by far the best deck food.

This doesn't sound fun to me.

is this considered a 'good deal' ie "buying" points? I mean, if it gets canceled, I've bought them, right? So say a room is normally $160 plus taxes, or I can do 8,300 points plus $115- so if I had to cancel ,they'd refund me 19,166 points?

So glad yours is finally coming!!! I don't know why mine was such an anomaly, receiving it in 2 weeks. I wish they would just go in order of receipt, so people know what to expect. Like yours definitely should have came wayyyy before mine! That makes no sense. I'm glad your stress levels can go down now though!!

Ditto this. When we came back from Japan, I needed like a week just to get back on the same time zone, process all that we had seen and done, etc. I was ready to be in my own bed, do laundry, eat food that I cooked, etc. Being home for a day or two and leaving again sounds like a chore in my opinion. I think I'd be stressed about it!

Oy this was us a couple of weeks back in the NE..... the sky was a deep hazy orange glow for days, it was like an orange or yellow fog that made everyone feel tired

I've read on the blogosphere that many do take advantage of the points and cash to "buy" IHG points. I have not done it yet. Generally speaking the rule of thumb is not to buy points speculatively. Buy them when you have something planned and will use them if the opportunity arises and you are getting more value than you would with cash on the points purchase and redemption.

I have bought Hilton points now and again over the years when they have the 100% bonus offer and I have something planned for an aspirational Hilton stay. It works out to .005 a cent per point. I will often combine a FN cert stay with a points stay on a property that costs waaay more money than I'm willing to spend and the value is far more than my points purchase.

I'm pretty sure I did see an IHG points sale within the last few months that worked out to .005 per point. I didn't look into to it because I don't have any current plans with IHG beyond using FN certs in WDW and eventually another stay at The Willard in DC on points. I still have enough for that in my stash.

I have a delta skymiles platinum card. I met the spend requirement at the end of May. How long does it typically take for the miles to post on my account? Also, I just got TSA precheck. That is listed as one of the perks of the skymiles platinum. When do they erase that charge? My husband paid for his TSA precheck through his chase unted card and the charge erased immediately. Thanks!

I've 'bought' points this way in the past by searching for a rate that was at .005 or lower. Those are few and far between now, but if in a pinch you can easily get .006. Daily getaways (no longer available) just had the .005 offer so, since there were no pending points bargains I picked up a few to make a reservation.

Shortly afterwards I got the .005 offer from ihg/points.com

In the past this was a pretty large money saver. I could save as much as half on a room by buying up points. But, now IHG points value corresponds very closely to the value of the room. That means that earned points or points from a signup bonus are the best deal and makes buying them sort of a 1 to 1 transaction that mostly works if you want to use up some earned or leftover points.

With this in mind I just got the IHG Biz card with 165K signup bonus.

EDIT: just wanted to mention that I'm making a next year's reservation for an IHG property. I am lucky in that I got the room nights booked before they finished adjusting the rates. The room jumped from 13K a night to 111K a night. The 111K is probably a placeholder to keep people like me from booking ahead of the inevitable price increases that haven't been firmed up yet.

…Can I go from Ireland to the Caribbean 2 days later? LOL
I’d only consider it if I could rope it into the Ireland trip, go from Ireland to Miami instead of home. Going home would take too much energy & effort. I would also be stressed about travel delays causing me to miss the boat between the two trips. (I have fam caught up in the UA debacle, supposed to depart Thurs, now won’t be able to depart until Sat.) The time change thing wouldn’t concern me much, it’s not like you’re driving or cleaning or cooking on a ship. I’d say book a hotel with laundry available for use to wash some stuff between trips but idk how much clothing overlap there would be between Ireland & the Caribbean.
