Her kick crap out Lady Liberty one hand tied behind back.

Svetlana command you stand at attention and honor Soviet anthem.

(Actually, the Soviet National Anthem is quite a beautiful tune. I enjoyed it after hearing it so often in 1972 and 1976.)

Nice satire, Svetlana.

I’ve noticed since the breakup of the USSR that when combined, its former components still are often the leader in medals.

Is anybody else having trouble accessing the replay for the closing ceremonies on the NBC Sports website? I can access everything else but when I try to open the Closing Ceremonies (and Opening, too) I get a screen telling me I need to upgrade my service. But I'm using my Sling TV subscription and I could access the Opening Ceremony before. Hmm!

How about on their website? - https://stream.nbcolympics.com/nbc-primetime-closing-ceremony

Thanks, but I got the same message:

"Oops! Something went wrong

You do not have full subscriptions to view the requested content. Please upgrade your programming then log back in to view content."

Actually it looks like I can't watch anything from the NBC broadcast. I can watch full event replays but none of the NBC nightly broadcasts.
It works if I sign in with my U-Verse account as my TV Provider

If you go to where it says "Search Full List" you should be able to select Sling TV

The screen I receive if I select Sling TV to sign in says
596269

I don't know if it matters but I circled in black the message of "Must be a current subscriber to NBC". Does your Sling TV subscription get NBC?

If I don't select a TV Provider then it only gives like a 30min preview of the content.

I've been watching a few on YouTube.... well, re-watching them :)

I really like the Sailor Moon music from Uzbekistan's rhythmic gymnastics team!

Thanks! :) I'll have to check but that might be it, I have Sling Blue and they might not get NBC.

I can watch it if I pay five bucks to Peacock as it's a premium content video. So I guess that's an option too!

ETA: OK, I found out that I can access the closing ceremony directly on the Sling Blue page! For some reason it won't work anywhere else. But I was able to find it! :)

Yay! Glad you're able to watch it :)

My family and I were discussing earlier the impact it will have on countries choosing their flag bearer for the closing ceremony. Australia has had a fantastic first week in the water-based events, but the medals will definitely start to dry up now that the athletics is starting. In a normal Olympics I would expect Emma McKeon (who won 7 medals in the pool in Tokyo - the most of any female Olympian in history - 4 of them gold and is now Australia's most decorated Olympian) to be our flag bearer, but she will likely be back in Australia, locked in a hotel room for 2 weeks. So does that mean our flag bearer has to be someone who perhaps made an athletics final? There may be some countries that have no athletes remaining in Tokyo by the end of the games so what do they do? I wonder if they will have something virtual instead.
A little bit late responding, but apparently they could make exceptions when needed to have athletes available for the closing ceremony.

The IOC and Tokyo 2020 may consider exceptions to NOC’s arrival and departure policies (one or two days) subject to certain criteria:
  • Training Obligations: In certain sports where the International Federations implements minimum on-site training obligations
  • Training Partners: In certain sports (e.g. combat, racquet, etc.) eliminated athletes may still be required by the NOC to act as a sparring/training partner for team members still competing.
  • Time Zones: In cases where the athlete will experience a significant time zone difference with their city of origin and Tokyo
  • Flight Availability: Consideration of global flight availability
  • Opening and Closing Ceremonies: In order to guarantee the representation of athletes from all 206 NOCs, the proximity of competition start/completion dates to the Ceremonies.
Looks like Australia's flag bearer was in sailing. The last event was on August 5, so he must have been there for 4 days.

No one wants that job, because it's incredibly expensive like all international events.
With Eurovision, the winning country hosts next year. When Portugal won in 2017 it was an issue, because the country had enough financial issues already.
Is that why the Netherlands never hosted a World Cup? With association football being your country’s national sport, I never understood why they have not hosted yet. Genuinely curious. :-)🇳🇱

According to Google, several reasons:
1. We apparently didn't try hard enough,
2. We cannot do it alone, we have to do it together with at least Belgium and in 2018/2022 Luxemburg joined as well,
3. With that, Fifa doesn't like multi-countries, they prefer single country cups,
4. we don't have a stadium that fits 80.000 people required for the finale, we need to build that.
5. because Russia got 2018, we were cancelled for 2022 as Fifa doesn't want 1 continent hosting two times in a row.

I think you said in the past that you’re not a big soccer fan, but would you go to a World Cup game if it was hosted in your country?

Oh definitely not. Too many crazy people and hooligans from inside and outside NL will be gathered here. No reason to visit it in person and be in the line of fire.

Actually it would be the former components of the British empire that would lead if we counted that way.
Doesn’t that get complicated? Not all of the United States was under British rule. Where does Puerto Rico fit into all this? Is someone from California counted towards Spain or Mexico?

However, a lot of the best in a particular sport are concentrated in specific countries. If China were somehow split, I’m sure the separate nations could field highly competitive teams in sports like table tennis and diving. The Soviet sports system still has an influence in many of the former Soviet republics.

They are a territory of the U.S., like Virgin Islands and then like Guam and American Samoa.

The IOC recognizes them as island nations allowed to compete with their own team. I believe Virgin Islands is down there right now aren't they? And American Samoa too I *think*
They’re grandfathered in. A new territory isn’t likely to be allowed it’s own Olympic team.
So why are the Faroes in what Hestoy calls a "no-man’s land"?
It has to do with a change in the IOC charter. Before 1995, countries' overseas territories and other dependencies were allowed to qualify for the Olympics on their own, since many are self-governing and technically not "part of" the countries they belong to. But since then, the rules have limited recognition to independent states recognized by the international community.
There were ten such territories that were grandfathered in under the new rules. More importantly for the Faroes, there are three countries – Taiwan, Palestine and Kosovo – that are not members of the United Nations but are in the Olympics. So there is room for the IOC to make an exception for the Faroe Islands.

Just looked at the Eredivisie table and considering the only two clubs I've heard of in it are Ajax and PSV Eindhoven I'd doubt the Dutch have the 7-10 stadia that hold 50K each required to bid.

3. With that, Fifa doesn't like multi-countries, they prefer single country cups,

Considering that '26 is Canada/USA/Mexico and '02 was South Korea/Japan this doesn't seem to be a hard and fast rule. Perhaps a joint Netherlands/Belgium bid would be worth a look? Also, checking the Wikipedia article for the 2030 World Cup shows that there are a lot of joint bids being considered

The World Cup doesn't necessarily require 50K seat stadiums. I looked up the venues in Qatar, and 6 out of the 8 stadiums used will be in the 40-45K range. In Brazil they had about half of their stadiums in the 40-45K range. In Russia (2018) and France (1998) they had several stadiums around 30K.

The last WC where all the stadiums had at least 50K capacity was in the US in 1994.

My knowledge of football is almost non-existent. The article I googled said for the finale an 80k stadium was a requirement for the bid of 2018.
