Anyone up? Harry & Meghan Royal Wedding Watch thread

I haven’t read all 32 pages of this thread but have to add that Gina Torres was the best dressed guest. She looked beautiful.

Is there a pic? I only saw her sitting and didn't get a look at her full outfit. I always loved how she dressed on Suits. Now, her character is a powerful woman. And she'd smack anyone along side the head for saying her ambition is derogatory. :duck: The character is a Harvard Law grad, extremely successful, and YES, she is absolutely a social climber and career climber and proud of all she's done to create a successful law firm. AND her name went first on the company wall & letterhead. :thumbsup2

Imzadi - Meghan had a clothing line at one of our stores, Reitman's. I only know because her image was front and centre for a bit. :goodvibes

The Meghan Markle Collection.

I'm late chiming into this thread, but we had, not one, but two high school graduations & the additional festivities to attend Saturday (one of which was our DD's) & then a dance recital on Sunday, so I wasn't able to immerse myself the way I wanted in all things royal-wedding this weekend!

Anyway, I'll admit that there's something about Meghan which makes me wonder. She's gorgeous & accomplished & uses her celebrity to speak for feminist issues, but I can't quite put my finger on what it is about her, but it's there. So I get what people are saying.

I just like Kate better. And, also, it may have something to do w/ how I was always silently rooting for Chelsy Davys.

The above picture of Meghan in the carriage w/ that smile on her face while Harry is looking the other way is perfection! LOL!

However, I'm one of the ones who actually LOVED her dress! I thought she looked very regal in an understated, elegant way. There was also a bit of an exotic, yet almost medieval "look" to her appearance. I absolutely LOVED the veil & its symbolism - the flowers sewn around the edge for each of the 53 commonwealths plus the state flower from California & the flower that grows in front of their cottage. And that gorgeous, historic tiara tied everything together perfectly! I think, had her dress been more embellished, the veil wouldn't have been as much of a showstopper. And I adore how her bouquet was hand-picked by Harry.

I also liked how she walked herself down the aisle & then was met by Prince Charles.

And Meghan's mother is my hero! I love how composed yet proud she looked. She sat there alone, surrounded by royalty in a world that had been foreign to her, but, yet, she took her place w/ such lovely grace & style!!

Before, I had admired Carole Middleton, who was also commoner w/ a daughter marrying royalty, & how well she looked & handled herself during Kate & William's wedding But Mrs. Middleon, even though her family's not royal or aristocratic, is still more familiar w/ English royalty & the customs & traditions. Plus, she had other family w/ her. But Doria Ragland was just stellar. I love her!!

Oh, & my favorite moment of the day was when Kate gave Camilla a look during the service.

Same on everything, Wendy. :goodvibes Especially Meghan's mom.

People usually don't connotate men being ambitious, organized, strategic, climbing up the ladder at work or socially, being successful at reaching certain goals, with such negativity as when WOMEN are described as such. And it's friggin 2018, and some people are still throwing shade at women for doing the same things. Like there's something wrong for being ambitious, strong, goal oriented, organized, into many things, successfully progressing in career and life, doing causes because one actually believes in them.

Do you know what the ODDS are of Meghan Markle to be the one to land Prince Harry? She had even already gotten married once before. Oops! She must have gotten sidetracked from her goal. She wasn't even living in England when she met him. I don't think working in a Commonwealth across the pond counts for much, if he was her goal.

Like, did Amal Clooney become a very good human rights lawyer, at a prestigious British law firm because she had George Clooney, (who is very much a human rights activist himself,) in her sights all this time? That all the cases she worked on and helped win were simply so that, one day, she'd KNOW someone who would finally be able to introduce her to George? Do you know what the ODDS are of landing George Clooney? :confused3 [snip]

Oh, for crying out loud. I'm NOT being negative, and I'm CERTAINLY not slamming her for being an ambitious and driven woman. I'm impressed, actually, that by age 36 she got where she so obviously wanted to be.

Look, I think she admired Princess Diana and was interested in the British monarchy; nothing evil about that, I'm interested in the British monarchy as well. It's one of the longest-surviving monarchies in the world, in one of the longest-surviving nation-states in the world, and has had a huge influence on world affairs over the centuries.

I do NOT think that she plotted from childhood to marry one of the Wales' sons. I do think that she decided in childhood that she was going to BE SOMEBODY or die trying. I also think that she realized fairly early in adulthood that there are certain available paths to positions of influence, and that some of them are more direct than others. Marrying into aristocratic circles is one of the most direct paths that exists. Marrying for money and/or status isn't an evil thing to do as long as both parties have their eyes open, and especially isn't thought to be so by aristocrats; they have been marrying for money and influence since the beginning of civilization, and men do it just as often as women. (FWIW, my own great-grandfather did it. Not aristocrats in any sense, but my GGM was the heiress to a nice spread of excellent farming land. My GGF changed his name when he married her, because that was one of his new FIL's conditions for approving the marriage.)

I think that after her experience in a very exclusive Los Angeles high school, Meghan Markle deliberately made it a point to seek out and befriend people who were influential, and especially those who had ties to avenues of international influence, not necessarily to marry into it, though she would have to be an idiot not to realize that that was something that would help her reach her goals (and as I said, whatever else the lady may be, she's no idiot.) You are right, I don't know her, but I can recognize a pattern when I see one, and I see one. Want to talk odds? What are the odds that her new best friend in her newly adopted country would be the DIL of the former PM of that country, and one of the wealthiest heiresses in the country, to boot? It stretches credulity to believe that was an accident of fate. She made that happen.

FTR, I don't think this is about money; she's a social climber right enough, but I've seen nothing to indicate that she's any kind of gold-digger. I believe that her goal was to become internationally influential, and she's achieved it. Does she love Harry? I don't know if she does or not (because I don't know her after all), but she says that she does, and her drive to become a person of influence certainly played some role in putting her into his sphere. I think that having met him, she probably felt that she had a solid shot at a relationship with him, and hedged her bets by changing her life in ways that ensured that she would be accepted in his world.

(And for those who doubt the influence of a lighting director, remember that one of her first industry jobs was as a game-show "suitcase girl". That's the kind of job that a successful lighting director would certainly be able to swing for his pretty daughter. She got the larger roles on her own, but her father's industry connections certainly would have helped get her in the door on her first small jobs.)

I've never watched Suits. Never knew it was a TV show at all until this wedding. Had no idea who Meghan Markle was until her engagement to Prince Harry was announced. I don't really care who she is. She and her husband seem very much in love. And after what Princess Diana went through, I think it's pretty darn great that Prince Harry got to not only fall in love with but also marry the woman he loves (instead of having his spouse pretty much picked for him) is pretty darn great. And what's also really great is how they were able to develop their relationship in private before the whole world found out and the papparazzi started following them around everywhere.

Meghan's mom looked lovely. Prince Charles was great and seemed very welcoming to Meghan's mom. Honestly, that was kind of nice to see since Prince Charles for a long time had a reputation as being rather stiff.

I applaud Prince Charles and Princess Diana for raising 2 people who have grown up to be genuinely nice, caring, loving people who are well grounded and do not seem stuck up or snobby.

Oh and that picture of the lady wearing that orangey-red dress...that dress looks great on her, whoever she is. her whole outfit looks very nice.

Really? I loved it. :goodvibes

I love hats though. Have about twenty or more.

She played a great character on Suits - really strong, cabanafrau. And I think she is married to Laurence Fishburne.

Honestly, I've heard of Suits, but somehow it sailed right past me for whatever reason. If I had to say I would have guessed it was on for somewhere in the 2-4 years range. I was kind of surprised to see the comment above saying it was on for 7 years. Apparently I was in a cave somewhere, so clueless.

Love Laurence Fishburne -- although I needed a minute after the Ike Turner role. It always strikes me as odd watching him on Blackish as Pops, because I feel he's way too young to play it -- not that he can't do it convincingly.

Anyway, you can have her hat, I'll stick with admiring her gorgeous dress.

I only felt that some comments about Meghan directly are being unfairly misconstrued, with the intent behind them. Because they are about Meghan and not women in general. And like I've already said for me I could have an unexplained feeling about a man's personality as well.

No, I totally get what you mean about having a "feeling" about someone you met or haven't met. I used to get an icky vibe every time I saw the chef, Mario Batali. I thought maybe I was just being totally superficial  as he is very paunchy and looks unkempt and smelly all the time, to me, even though I've only seen him on TV. But, on the news in the last couple months, and especially the last few days, there are now allegations that he raped a woman and his restaurant was a rape culture. :scared:

It was merely mentioned because Meghan speaks like she knew little of Harry, and of the goings and comings of the Royal Family. Tying in some of us having a gut feeling that there is a feeling of disingenuity in her personality when she talks, besides these stories. That's all. Are we right? Maybe not.

Yeah, the part about her not knowing about the Royal family, I snorted about that one. Heck, I admit it, I know a LOT about the Royal family, and I haven't even met one of them. :p However, she might not have known much about Harry recently.

I figure it was like when Heather Mills said she didn't know Paul McCartney was a Beatle or anything about his music. She sure knew how much he had made during their divorce proceedings.

And Alec Baldwin's current wife, a yoga instructor, said she didn't know anything about Alec as she didn't have a TV. That mayor may not be true. Since he had such a contentious divorce with his first wife and the raising of their daughter, I think he needed to hear someone might not be after him for his money or fame.

She was also Zoe in Firefly ( the best show ever that fox killed). Zoe was a strong woman too.

My youngest daughter has a reputation for being very friendly, very easy going, never met someone who isn't a friend. Ironically she has a "list" of celebrities she will have no part of for reasons she cannot explain. The list is completely random and off the wall. I know that Morgan Freeman and Rachel Ray are on her list. It's always a head scratcher when she announces another name. I know my father could not stand Ethel Merman.

Well you do have an outcome on your thoughts, unfortunately.
