Inconsiderate Cruisers

I haven't cruised disney but honestly I have been on two princess cruises and I'm really not sure if you are supposed to pick up your plates/cups from the pizza and grill areas on deck still. Most of the time someone is taking out plate before we even get up but on a few of the occasions that they didn't and we went to go put them in teh area the servers went to take them from us. Occasionally all the servers are busy and we have put things back but I'm not sure if those are server areas or we are supposed to clean up for ourselves. I can understand why some people just leave things and assume its like the buffett inside where they clean up after you.

That is usually the policy. I too think food in the hallways is gross, but every time we call after ordering room service they tell us to put our tray in the hallway and they will send somebody.

In both hotels and ships, leaving for the housekeeper isn't the polite thing to do because they don't have time to run back to the kitchen. It's different staff that collect and return etc. the dishes.

I'm not sure what people on this thread do. Maybe just not order room service? It's never occurred to me to try to take my cart back to the galley myself.

See I didn't know that about the dishes either... we always left them in the room. Didn't know it was an issue. Leaving them in the hall seemed gross and the halls are narrow.

Okay, this is slightly off topic, but my mom is one of those rude people. I don't get it...she has always had low-paying jobs where she cleans up after people, like Target, nurse assistant, daycare worker, etc. But she does this!
I took her and my son to see Cinderella. She got a popcorn, and she got a large because you can either get 3 bites of popcorn for $6 or way more than you can eat for $7, so she did not finish it. She just put it under her seat, she was closer to the aisle, so she just walked out of the theater. She even saw me taking time to get my empty drink cup and looked down at her popcorn and still left it like she couldn't be bothered. My son was next to her, and you guessed it, kicked the popcorn accidentally, creating a terrible mess. I was really embarrassed. (I did the best I could to clean up, but I had nothing to clean with and people were trying to get by)
My mom also worked at Target several years, and yet, when we go to the grocery store and she decides she doesn't want something, she will just randomly stick it on a shelf.

Honest question, what are you supposed to do with your room service dishes, if not put them in the hall? I haven't ordered room service in a good, long while, but I thought I recall there being instructions, at least in some hotels, to do exactly that. Perhaps along with a call to room service to come retrieve them?

We always leave them in the room since the halls are so narrow. They are always gone after the stateroom host comes through. Same thing if I bring food down from Cabanas. We leave the tray and plates and things in the room on the little coffee table.

I can't speak to your mom specifically, but I think some folks who have had jobs like that might get on the ship and think "I've put up with crap like that for years. Now it's MY turn to leave a mess behind and have someone clean up after me."

Probably. It's just funny because DH and I are the opposite. And we are both total slobs at home, but we don't leave messes for other people.

I despise old food trays in hallways... nothing it more gross than passing by a plate of gnawed chicken bones with a miasma of BBQ, honey mustard, and blue cheese wafting up as you walk by.

We rarely get room service b/c i just dont know what to do with the old plates b/c if you do call, they tell you to put it outside and they'll send someone. Then it sits there for hours and my kid usually trips over it... I usually take it up to the pool deck and sit it on the bus stations outside Cabanas.

As for the pool deck, I've never noticed a problem with old plates and cups. Maybe b/c the CMs take care of them so quickly. When we eat on the deck, we usually find a table rather than take it to our loungers - i dont like to eat in the sun with people walking by, etc.

Regarding the dirty plates in the hallway-maybe there is confusion because it isn't consistent. We left our dirty plates from room service inside our room and they were not taken away. They weren't taken until I put them in the hallway. So I wonder if the poster above that mentioned that it is different staff that takes the dishes to the kitchen is correct. It seemed to be in our case.

Not me. It makes me more conscientious. At a restaurant, I stack everything for easy clearing. At a hotel, all the dirty towels are collected and put in the tub for easy collection and all the trash is placed in a can. At the movies, I take everything I brought in with me. It doesn't take much for people to be courteous to each other.

This is true. They tell you to put your tray outside your door and someone will remove it, but that may take hours and accounts for the cluttered and often smelly corridors. I now have a habit of leaving the tray on that first storage area just inside the door. As I leave the cabin I'll usually spot our room host along the way. I'll mention where I left the tray, and when I return it is gone. :)

I'm not the neatest person in the world but in small spaces (like a cruise cabin) clutter bugs me. I would think that our room host liked our room as it was pretty neat compared to some I saw!

I'm also one that picks up after myself at movies, puts plates and towels away on deck etc.. I have to remind my kiddo to do it but she does. I'm hoping she will do it without reminders if I'm not around

No everyone! I worked as a cabin cleaner when we first bought our small resort. We did not have the funds to hire a full cleaning staff at the time, so my Mom, daughter, and myself cleaned cabins for a year! We found out that if people are clean at home, they tend to be clean on vacation. They don't use it as an excuse to be a slob. There were others who felt entitled, and clearly didn't clean up a thing, even the simple little everyday things we do to keep things clean. Thankfully, those were few and far between:)
Later, we expanded our business (doubled it), and hired a full staff of 5 cleaners with a team leader.
I will never forget my experiences as someone who HAS to work those type of low pay jobs. We always clean up after ourselves, just like at home, and leave nice tips for housekeeping. I Know what it's like to constantly clean up others messes.
So, I feel that there is no excuse to leave your mess for others, even if it "is their job". I'm puzzled that someone who has worked in that industry would do the same to others who have to work in housekeeping?

I agree. I think it goes farther then just dirty or wet towels by the pool. Today, theres too many people that feel entitled to everything and nothing is their fault. Rained for pirate night, the world comes to an end. Theyll want a refund for there cruise. Their kid runs down a hallway and into someone else, the other person should have moved quicker. Don't get me started on elevators or common courtesy and manners. Ive been on DCL cruises since 98, on all 4 ships, and there is a steady decline in the atmosphere for lack of a better term. Back then, cruise casual meant polo shirt and nice pants in the dining room. Formal meant shirt and tie. Today, just about anything goes. Back then people held elevators for those that couldn't move fast enough due to a disability, or they waited for you to get off the elevator. Today you get run over. No video in the theaters. That applies to everyone else......................... Is it really that hard to play by the rules?

So what should you do with your plates?
I agree that it looks gross, but what option do you have?

You will not order room service because you dont know what to do with the plates, seems a little extreme to me.....

According to the note that came with our room service order your supposed to call room service when you're done for them to come pick them up. We actually didn't do this, but left them in our cabin and they were cleaned up.

I also very much dislike walking past dirty dishes and half eaten food.

Oh, I agree completely. But I know people first-hand who work such jobs who have that "It's my turn to be cleaned up after" mentality. Not saying everybody who works such jobs is like that, but I think the sentiment is out there. Two sides of the same coin.

Same as people who've never had to work such a job in their life. Some might think of their high financial standing as carte blanche to treat people like dirt. Others might look at their income as a blessing, and realize that the CMs are working super-hard for low pay, and the least you can do is clean up your crap. It takes, like, 10 seconds.

WELL SAID!

Excellent question, Lovepooh! Here's what I learned you do: When you are through with your room service items, simply pick up the phone just like you did to order and let Room Service know that you are finished with your meal. They will come get it because they don't want icky food/dishes in the hallways either.

I always tip when room service is delivered and for us, we are usually heading out of our stateroom after room service so I let Room Service know that I am leaving the tray outside our door. I am very careful to place it snug against the wall near our own door. They have always been very quick to get the dishes removed.
