That's IT! I'm done!!!

Jody, I really feel for you! I remember a thread some what like this last year. Someone's Dad cancelled on them, we find out that Mom is really miffed, she wanted to go to WDW(he did not consult with he before telling DD they weren't going) Mom "knocks" some sense into the guy, he really didn't want to leave their dog in the kennel.

I guess I'm like everyone else I thought he was in his 80's(my late parents were still going really strong in their 70's, DD travelling and running a business and the best going to Pilates class with DM and finding out a 70 yr is more flexible than me. ).

My MIL is 88 goes out and works in her garden every day(she gave up air travel about 10 yrs ago, but does go on day bus trips to the nearest casinos).

I can understand your situation to a certain degree. It puts you in a bind with points. We are reluctant to ask others to go. I think people get caught up in the moment, on going to WDW, then get to thinking, oh we cant afford it, or whatever reason they can justify backing out. But they dont understand what we have to go through to get the points back in a manageable position.

I feel your pain.

I'd tell the FIL that this cancellation is costing you money. Figure the difference in points between your one bedroom and 2 bedroom, figure them at $8 per point. Tell him that is what you are "out" because of his cancellation, then see if he offers to reimbuse you the difference. ;)

I agree... only it should be DH that tells him. I never say "I told you so", but our DVC points are for DW and me. We might some day take our (now grown) children again....

WOW! He's 58 and feeling that way?!?!?!?!?!? I'm older than that and have disc/back issues too, but no way I would ever keep it from letting me enjoy life! He is middle aged, not old! At the begining of this thread, I was thinking we were talking about someone in their 80's!

I agree, OMG, I hadn't realize that we were talking about a young person. He's not much older than I am and the same age as my husband. We can barely find anyone to go to WDW with us because they can't keep up. I had a disc problem last year and had back surgery and was back in WDW 6 weeks after surgery. (I was bummed because I couldn't ride any of the big rides and thought the safari was going to kill me....ouch) but never needed a scooter, because walking was the perfect PT for me. I never plan to slow down and walk 3 miles every day. I think he just doesn't want to go, or make the effort. We take our grandson with us often and enjoy sharing WDW with them and our grown kids. That is sad that you can't share your Disney enjoyment with them. It's truly sad in so many ways.

Aah yes, vacationing with the family. I got burned last August with almost the identical situation. Unfortunately it was my sister who did the burning. In hindsight I should have known better the women can't commit to going to Walmart!

Enjoy your vacation anyway.

The reason I was so upset it because FIL is the one that said he'd love to go if he can get MIL to agree. Once she agreed we went forward with the plans. A few weeks ago "definitely" turned into "maybe" which turned into me pricing RVs for the drive down. I must have checked 5 places before I could convince them that it just wasn't going to happen...at least not with our money.

I just can't understand these two. Since it's only the two of them they actually have just as much, if not more, income as we do, and we have a lot more bills and expenses. This "we're broke" act is really getting old. We were going to pay for tickets and DDP for both of them so that can't have been the reason.

I'm beginning to think that maybe it was a "power play" FIL was going for to see if we'd walk to his tune. Well, I will most definitely be the one to tell him that they can't go if he decides he can make the trip after all. Getting a 1-bedroom at this late date is usually no problem, but getting a 2-bedroom...well...you know how popular those are.

And I'm sorry that you guys thought that I was being mean to an honest to goodness older person. I'll say it again...58 IS NOT OLD! I'll be 71 the year my BWV membership runs out and I intend to be the first person from the rope drop that arrives at the Rock'n Roller Coaster...or Splash Mountain...or Expedition Everest...or Soarin'...or...

My parents are 64 and 61, and just bought into DVC with us - they love WDW. Of course, they also do reasonable things like fly in airplanes. There's no accounting for craziness :rolleyes1 .

Heck I agree FIFTY EIGHT is young. I fail to see why folks think you should bend over backwards when Dad is being a pain.

We took my best friends MIL who has a lot of the same issues as your FIL. Our only concession was renting her a ECV (which was a trip... she had NEVER driven anything with an engine before. One of us walked in front of her at ALL times so if she killed someone it was at least not a total stranger!)

She had a great time, and never complained..... she's in her 80s!!!!

Attitude is 90% of life, sounds to me like FIL has decided to have a bad one and all the "bending over backwards" in the world isn't going to change that!

Being mean? I thought you were bending over backwards to try to make him happy. Paying for their tickets and food, too? You're a saint in my book.

No kidding , I did not think she was being mean or out of line.

JodyTG , I'll tell you what .......I will fly and I'll even pay for my own airfare . I have an AP so you'll only have to pay for my DP . How do you want me sweet kind and gentle , or a grumpy old man ? I can be either !!!! :lmao:

Not going to say "I told you so". But I am very sorry.:grouphug: We got burned last year too. I planned a trip for my DSIL and her family. Just them and they backed out with in 25 days of the trip. I was able to still use some of the points but I lost 9. I too was very angry. It is one of those lessons. If people really want to go then I feel they can make their reservations themselves. They can stay where ever they want. They can get there how they want. If they go the same time we can meet up.

Hopefully you will still have a great time. :goodvibes

Oh in that case, I'd tell him what a git he's being to his face and have a nice cathartic laugh over his reaction. Just who died and made him king?!

Tell you what, you just show him this pic of my 75 year old, triple bypass survivor dad who still works 6 days a week though he has arthritis, psoriasis and heart disease. Only thing to get him in a funk is NOT being on vacation.

P.S. What made me angry was you pricing out the RVs. If he wants it that bad then he darn well can do the legwork.
P.S.S. If your Christmas plans run into New Year's, look for my dad and I. We're flying in for a few days at SSR.

Tell DAD , I said Hell Yeah

Maybe I missed it, but this is your FIL, right? What has your DH said to HIS DF about all of this?

I wonder what the rest of the story is. There has to be some underlying power play for this to have evolved as laid out.

Definitely, 58 is not old!! DH is 58, and has degenerative disc disease. According to him, walking is an absolute mandatory exercise. Standing can be a problem, but walking is not. He walks a minimum of 3 miles a day. Except for the last couple of months, 'cause he just had his hip replaced. :goodvibes He's planning to walk Epcot in October for the Food & Wine Fest. If there is a problem with his hip, we'll get an ECV. Of course there is always the medicinal effect of the F&W. :thumbsup2

My mom is 73 and used a ECV back in 2001 and 2002 when I took her to WDW. Since then, her back has gotten much worse with the discs compressing. She is about to have her knee replaced though. I'm really trying to talk her into coming with us to Disney in March of 2008 but we'll have to see what her walking ability is after the knee surgery. I'm hoping it will be much better and she'll come with us again. I know she wants to...

Last time we were in the MK in April, an older couple probably in their 70s passes us as we were taking a people watching break. I poked my DH and told him "that's us in another 25 years." We fully plan to keep going to WDW until we're no longer capable of getting there.
