Hey guys! I'm down here in Williamsburg, on vacation from Oakville and wondering what's going on with the power up there. Who's affected? Hope you are all okay!

Here in St. Catharines Ontario the power is still off after 8 hours! Pretty surreal, knowing many parts of the whole continent have been affected!!!

Power is still out here where I am in Ottawa but I have my laptop (with a battery) and a power inverter so have been checking the internet (CBC & CNN...and of couse thought I should quickly check this board ;)). I sure hope it comes on soon...kids had to eat all the ice cream tonight...poor them. :teeth:

It's starting to come on in various cities and sections of cities so hopefully we'll all be up & running soon. In the meantime the Premier has declared a state of emergency and is asking all non-essential or non-emergency workers to stay home from work to keep roads/highways clear. It'll be tough for everyone to take a Friday off. ;)

Talk to everyone soon.

power came on here in Don Mills about 3:45am. I just went out for a quick drive around the neighbourhood here at 7:30am to see if I could get gas, but just down the street, there is no power. I called into work, and our building at Yonge & Sheppard still had no power at 6:30 and they told everyone not to come to work today! Yeah! We'll head up to the cottage early! Hopefully there is power up there!? Boy was it dark in TO! Saw a ton of stars! Very interesting evening!:Pinkbounc :bounce:

What a night ~ it's like those old moves about World War II, when the family was gathered around the radio with no power and a world of uncertainty.... :(

Our big problem was our 200 gallon tropical reef aquarium with $15,000 worth of fish, corals and plants in it... a few hours is okay, but then things can go bad really quick.

I found out my husband is McGyver... by candlelight he took apart a bathroom fan, stripped the wires which he ran through a hole in the garage wall to his car batteyr... he had the fan in the water keeping the water moving... later he hooked up a cement mixer attachment to a power drill, also on stripped wires to the car... it was some set up, but I think he saved our fish life :)

Here in North Toronto (which, of course those who live in Toronto know isn't actually IN the northern part of the city any more) we got power back at 5:00 a.m. However, DMIL and DBIL, who each live about a 10 minute drive away (also in North Toronto) are still without power. For us, life is looking better with the promise of coffee.

DH spent an hour on a dark, hot subway and then had to be evacuated yesterday afternoon. He stocked up on bottled water and hoofed it home from Yonge & Bloor to Avenue Rd. & Eglinton - about an hour at a brisk walk. He considered it all worthwhile, though, to have that spectacular view of the night sky (serious astronomy buff).

Today the city has asked non-emergency people to stay at home and we'll avoid running all those high energy appliances - air conditioner, dishwasher, washer, dryer, and stove.

Cass - glad to hear the fish survived

Damo - I believe power was restored quite quickly in Oakville (also Burlington and Hamilton) from a news report last night around 10:00 p.m.

Hope everyone else is O.K.

We were only in the dark for about 4 hours.Power came back on about 8:15pm.I guess we were some of the lucky ones. Most of Hamilton was still without power at midnight.Just read in the paper that the people down in Niagara Falls didnt even know what was going on as the power stayed on there.Apparently ,according to the paper,an employee of the Niagara Hydro was able to take them off the affected power grid before that lights went out.Hopefully all of you who are still without power will get it restored soon.

I forgot to mention - that my DD9 was the hit of the neighbourhood with her portable DVD player that is battery operated.. :)

Her and some kids watched Harry Potter and E.T. last night while eating melting icecream and freezies. Oh to be a kid again...

I also made her ravioli on the BBQ.. LOL

We have the same concern...it's 10 am & we still don't have power. DH has "rigged something up" for the fish but hopefully it won't be much longer (the tank is built into a wall in our basement recroom where it's quite cool & the tank has to stay fairly warm). It seems petty worrying about fish but we lost a lot of them in the ice storm & like you said, they cost big $$...a hobby I wish DH would forget. OK, OK...I know I have Disney but he has fish tanks, 4 boats, scuba diving, golf, etc. ;) Here I am, worrying about meals for the family and 30+ degree heat & DH is worried about a bunch of fish. ;)

He also just rigged up something for the fridge as everything is starting to warm up...hopefully the deep freeze will be OK for a while longer. We're keeping our fingers crossed that it will be on today...they're hoping to have 75% of Ottawa runing by the end of the day. I bet we'll in the 25% that won't be up. ;)

Talk to you later. :)

Your deep freeze should be okay :) Dont even open it up to check!

Noel has named all of our fish.. she was so upset about them last night.

I was worried about the cement mixer... it looks like a giant egg beater and I was worried a fish would swim through

The corals are the really expensive things.. but Noel and I love our fish :(

Good Luck Lisa... hope the power is on soon

Hydro is saying we'll have "rolling power" but at least we can get the essentials powered up & cooled off for now. I was a little worried about all the stuff DH & DS#2 were rigging up. ;) I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it stays on.

Cass...your tank looks beautiful. DD has named most of our fish as well: the yellow tang is "Sunshine", the blue tang is now "Dory" (used to be called something else ;)) & the clownfish is now (you guessed it) "Nemo". :teeth: I have no idea what the others are called. ;)

Yippee, we just got power back at 12:45pm(Uxbridge). What a relief! I opened up the deep freeze to see how it was doing, and I'm pretty sure the meat is okay, still frozen since 4:15pm yesterday!
Hope everyone is doing okay. I could hear people cheering when it came back on!

We had our power (here on the east mountain in Hamilton) restored about 8:45pm last night but just as I was about to put my card in the ATM machine at the local Becker's store (11:40am today) the power went back out again. What a trying time to try and get across a busy intersection when there are no stoplights working! Our power has just now returned, but not sure for how long????

I really think this will be a part of living in a life where we use soooo much energy.:(

In Port Colborne we hadn't lost power. The city started spreading the word that after 1pm we would experience power outages. At 1:30pm the power went out in my and dh's stores so we head home to find the power on! I'm not sure when/if we will lose power at home. I would almost rather to have had no power during the day at home so I could finish my work day.

The amusing burn of it is, while we've had power since around 4:40am, the cable went out this morning, 20 minutes before the company sent an email saying the office was closed. I worked at home disconnected, and just found out 20 minutes ago when the cable came back, that I didn't have to!

Kungaloosh!
Mort.

We just lost our power again...I was afraid that would happen. We had power for about 5 hours.

It just amazes me that despite Hydro asking people to take it easy on their usage & to not turn air conditioners on, several neighbours had theirs on while we had power. We're all hot but we each have to do our part. What a waste of energy. I'm hoping we have another cool evening with a nice breeze like we did last night to cool everything down again.
