Dina's and Peter's MAGIC(al) second - January 2022 5 night MDAS

We were told on our first visit to Nassau that the first building with the statue in front of it was the "most photographed" building in the Bahamas--who knows if that's true, but we have made sure to stop there on our subsequent visits to always take a picture there!

I wish I had known about the Queen's Staircase before! This is the first I've heard of it, and definitely have added to our list for next time. Nassau isn't a port we have spent much time exploring, so I'm glad to have more reason to give it some more time on our next visit.

It is a beautiful building right there outside the port of the most visited port in the Bahamas, so it's probably correct that it's the most photographed in the Bahamas. We can understand why. Looking at Google Maps now, and it sites in Parliament Square directly adjacent to the port.

When we were originally planning our stop in Nassau, I did a Google search of things to do, and Queen's Staircase was the second thing that popped up. Upon delving a bit further, I learned we could easily walk from the port. Silly me, though, I neglected to memorize the map...I thought we'd easily find it!

I was going to say the same thing never heard of the Queen’s staircase. Pretty cool was it walkable from the port?

Yes, it was pretty close. Even with wandering around a bit lost, and taking more steps than we probably needed to, we found our way in 15-20 minutes or so. The walk is a bit hilly, but not too steep...mostly uphill getting there and downhill coming back. It is south and east of the port, so you want to walk straight and to your left. (Approximately 3-4 blocks inland and 2 blocks east, though it's not an exact grid). I'm looking at the map now, and in retrospect, I think we walked south on East Street and hung a left on Sands Road and took that to the end, Elizabeth, where the staircase is on the right. At no place along the route we took was there any indication that we were moving toward a historical landmark of any kind. Maybe if you go a different way it's better marked? Probably easiest to bring a map.

We are headed to Nassau in April and Queen’s staircase is on our list! Maybe I’ll print off a map before we leave. :magnify:

I definitely recommend bringing your own map, since there weren't any readily accessible. There are many places of interest in the town that I'm sorry we missed, and they'd definitely be easier to find with a map. When we go back to Nassau, I will do some map-marking in advance and carry it with our documents.

Friday, January 21, 2022 (Nassau continued)

After the Queen's Staircase, our plans for Nassau took a dive. I mean, wiped out. Quite literally. I was marching along keeping up (almost) with Peter's longer stride, feet sweating in the heat. All of a sudden, I slipped off my wet sandals (open crocs) and fell face forward, bracing my fall with my forearms and hands, mostly on the left, where I was holding my phone. (I'm pretty sure the hem of my sun dress ended up around my waist, exposing my unmentionables to all passersby, not to mention the scorching Bahamian sun).

Embarrassment for my klutziness aside, it could have been so much worse. As I was tumbling forward in seemingly slow motion, I thought of ALL the ways in which it could have been much worse. I could have smashed by head on the ground, sustaining a head injury that could have led to brain damage or death. I could have broken multiple ribs or any number of other bones and wound up in traction in a Bahamian hospital. The list goes on, I won't mention all the bad things that COULD have happened. What ACTUALLY happened was I scraped my left hand, forearm and elbow in several places, some of which started bleeding lightly. It hurt, you know, kind of burned skinned-knee style. My phone went flying and the screen cracked but not badly. I'm still using the same phone today. And since I fell in the middle of the street, I was dirty. There was gravel embedded in my flesh. We needed to get back to the ship to wash it up and apply Bacitracin. Biggest casualty was the rest of the day in Nassau. But it was a wake-up call that anything can happen anywhere (which of course, I already know, but I needed to be reminded on vacation). Pay for the insurance. You don't know what can happen.

Turns out the fall was a kind of blessing in disguise. After I got cleaned up, we headed to the Cove Pool, where we found lounge chairs in the sun. We relaxed, read books, drank cocktails and held hands the entire day. We talked about taking a ride on the water slides or finding an activity on the ship, but why would we leave paradise? We stayed through happy hour and talked with other sun-loving Disney adults. Sadly, we have no pictures from this part of the day, as we left our phones charging in the room. We just chilled in the beautiful weather on the gorgeous Magic with each other's company...and it was perfect.

Friday, January 21, 2022 Continued - Dinner at Animator's Palate (our last dinner :( )

This post has pictures, because it's how I roll but mostly because we all need some food porn after the last heavy update!

When we went beack to the room to freshen up for the show and dinner, we found our last towel animal.
20220121_194309.jpg

I'm sure we went to the early show, but I can't remember what it was anymore.

Our last dinner was the rotation menu at Animator's Palate.

We ordered the obligatory Black Truffle Purseittes.

Peter and I have a different spin than most on these things, and we are on the same page about it. This is a totally over-hyped dish. Maybe THE MOST over-hyped dish. They're fine. I guess they're good. Are they amazing?! NO!! We reserved judgment the first time we tried them on the Fantasy, chalking it up to maybe a bad night. But this time on the Magic...just no. They're fine. We are not dreaming about them, and we've certainly had much better black truffle pasta. The "delicate champagne sauce" is just way too delicate. Maybe we don't like our food delicate. We like our food BOLD and Flavorful. We know this is an extremely unpopular opinion, and we'd still happily listen to and read your opinions on this, but....sorry (not sorry) you are wrong LOL. (and while you're debating this with us, try not to stab yourself in the throat with those vegetable garnishes).

Now HERE was something REALLY good, the Totato Tarte with goat cheese:
20220121_203359.jpg
This was light, fresh-tasting, and tangy...just yummy!

The Baked Potato and Cheddar Cheese Soup was also good, not too thin or salty.
20220121_203412.jpg

For entrees, we ordered the Herb-Crusted Pork Chop (very good):
20220121_204243.jpg

and the Ginger Teriyaki Dusted Angus Beef Tenderloin (nicely seasoned, a bit tough)
20220121_204251.jpg

The most amazing gift from our server Melroy from India!!
20220121_204428.jpg
Oh, boy this was such a treat and totally unexpected! How we love and thank Melroy! I can't remember exactly what these were, but there's a veggie stew maybe curry, with chickpeas, peas, carrots and potatoes, like the inside of samosa. That meat stew was amazing but I can't even remember the meat. It was a bit spicy (we had told Melroy we love Indian food and enjoy spicy food and he surprised us on our last night).

We asked for our Mickey Bar without the sprinkles

20220121_211448.jpg

Lemon Ice Box Cake

20220121_211456.jpg

Honestly we were too full for dessert.

I tried to get a good photo of our dancing animations, but I couldn't do it. They all came out blurry. But here's one of the credits haha:
20220121_213254.jpg

We enjoyed our dinner at AP, especially the surprise Indian food!

After dinner, we went back to the Promenade Lounge to enjoy the ship atmosphere before retiring our last night on the Magic. Neither of us remembers a See Ya Real Soon show, so we're thinking maybe they didn't have it? We don't enjoy the fully automated Navigator...we feel we miss things we wouldn't have missed with the printed schedule. We aren't sure if there's stuff that wasn't brought back since Covid or if we just missed them. It's hard to imagine they thought it was OK to do all the MDAS and Pirate activities during Covid, yet they did NOT have a See Ya Real Soon Show?

Next up...our last breakfast and disembarkation.

Ouch! What a bummer about your fall, but you're quite right to appreciate that it could certainly have been worse. Your afternoon enjoying the sun and happy hour sounds delightful though! My husband and I had a few similar afternoons with no pictures taken, just lounging and letting the magical hours pass by. Some of our favorite memories on that cruise!

So thankful it wasn't worse. But this ending is so you -- turning a bad happenstance into a reason for a restful and joyous moment together afterwards. Luckiest hub posting here.

Any commercial business that puts the onus on my phone (and its battery) to provide me with a service is not a service that you are providing. It's lazy and cheap not to print paper navigators.

This was my second joyous Disney cruise AND my second annoying and frustrating cruise with janky Internet and a DCL app that regularly fought with my phone's security settings by making me log in a jillion times.
And did I mention the main point -- I'm on a cruise! I don't want to have to carry my phone around! That's for every other day of my non-vacation life!

Just let me pick up a paper Navigator in the morning and fold it up in my pocket. It won't vibrate annoyingly in my pocket, it won't run out of batteries, and, most importantly, it won't demand my attention away from my wife for even a moment.

You're a vacation. Act like one.

Love reading your trip report! We have not yet taken a cruise... ever. We are now seriously considering a three day on one of the smaller ships... Just to get the feel of it. Your trip report gives lot of detail and makes it easier for the non-cruiser to have a sense of what this vacation is like. Thanks for taking the time to share your experiences. :-)

Saturday, January 22, 2022 - Debarkation

The only thing that made this morning bearable was knowing that when we debarked and checked our e-mail, we would find a confirmation for the Placeholder we had purchased before bed on our last night! Otherwise, what a rude awakening, to know you HAVE to get off the ship! It's not permanent, we WILL SEE YA REAL SOON!

We have always chosen the self-carry option for debarkation because we don't want the stress of packing early and putting our luggage outside the stateroom at a given time the evening before the nend. We prefer a more leisurely packing situation. Additionally, once it's the morning they're forcing us out? We just wanna get out. Quick and painless. Early as possible. Rip that band-aid right clean off. So we have previously always grabbed a quick early breakfast at the buffet and scooted out ASAP. But on the night before debarkation, Melroy asked usto please come to Cabanas at 8 am the next day. But we will have our luggage with us, we don't want to lug it through the restaurant. He said it would be OK, they'd take care of it. They seemed to really want people to come to the dining room as opposed to Cabanas. So we went to our first-ever debarkation day table-service breakfast.

Leaving stateroom #7624 was so sad. Even our fish looked sad:

20220121_221426.jpg
That's a frown, right?

We only had a couple of rolling carry-ons and some small back packs, which we were instructed to leave in the hallway leading to the restaurant, which on this day was Animator's Palate. We just love the place settings there, especially, of course, the butter knives.

20220122_075341.jpg

The menu cover was a happy cover! At least, you could choose to look at it that way!

20220122_075358.jpg

20220122_075351.jpg

I had the lox and bagel.

20220122_080031.jpg
I had some version of this almost every morning, from Cabanas. It was always delicious. I mean, the bagel is passable, but the lox and the fixings are top notch.

And Peter chose the Chef's Farewell, which was an open-face omelet with BBQ chicken, peppers, onions and cheese.

20220122_080102.jpg
Looks like Peter may have also chosen some kind of roll or muffin and either yogurt or mueseli. I'm thinking this was mueseli, as it was his last chance to have it for a while and it's one of his favorites.

Both of our breakfasts were great and we left with full bellies and happy hearts, knowing we'd be back soon.

We retrieved our bags and headed to the ship's exit, there was quite a line and people were already getting off. The line through customes was not short, but we didn't mind, as we had plenty of time to catch our 12:15 flight. We took a Lyft to the airport which was super quick, easy and around $35 with tip.

Our Delta flight was lovely and we had some nice snacks and friendly service. I think Delta is growing on me and is becoming my favorite airline.

20220122_131750.jpg

That concludes this report. I sincerely thank you for sticking with me, as I took a very long time to get all this out!

Our next cruise on the Disney Dream is coming really soon, and I will do another report for that trip, with hopes to provide info in a much more timely manner! I was motivated to get this report done before our next sailing. (This serves as a hint to Peter that the sooner we schedule another cruise, the faster I'll write my report! HAHA!)

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Muesli, along with a full English breakfast, are choices I never make at home. But put me on a cruise? Can't get enough of them.

I love your cruise bait to me, lol. XXOO

We were most looking forward to this station, which was just as good as ever
View attachment 646255

View attachment 646260

I also got a lamb chop and some salmon. The lamb was good (just a little dry), the salmon was GREAT
View attachment 646259

Peter took some carrot cake, which was good
View attachment 646256

The coffee is still gross, seriously...it's not drinkable
View attachment 646265

So that was it for Cabanas, but this is embarkation day, and we still had hours before our stateroom would be ready (3pm), AND we had to get the taste of that horrible coffee out of our mouths!

So...

We went out and grabbed some lamb/beef shwarma. This was fine but not great, a nice option to have on a ship
View attachment 646257

And then we needed a second dessert! I'm vanilla, Peter is chocolate
View attachment 646248

And a drink of the day, a Bahama Mama, in a souvenir glass
View attachment 646266

This is the life! We couldn't be happier.

Up next, more embarkation glee.
You guys are so darn cute! I’m on the Magic this July and loving this trip repor!

Ugh, the last day, so sad! It always comes too quickly, too.

We've never done express walk-off with our own bags, but after our last trip, we just might! We put our bags out (3 of them) the night before we debarked. When we got into the terminal to collect our bags, two of them were right beside each other, and the last one was nowhere to be found. We walked around and around our area and ended up getting two more CMs involved in the search. I was SWEATING and anxious the whole time trying to remember exactly what was packed in the now missing bag. It ended up turning up beneath some other suitcases as people were arriving and taking their bags. I was SO relieved, but never want to deal with that again!

Aww, thanks!! And thanks for reading! Enjoy the Magic!

We've never done other than carry our bags off, but stories like yours make us unlikely to choose the other option...as long as we are able to carry. Thank goodness your ordeal turned out OK! But who needs that kind of stress?

Thanks for sticking with this report all the looong way through!!
