Days Sixteen and Seventeen – Montreal

We spent most of day sixteen in transit, flying to Montreal from Vancouver, and arrived around 5pm.

Unfortunately we didn’t have a particularly great experience in Montreal so this section of my TR will probably be quite short. I don’t think this is representative of the city itself, but due to a few external factors. Firstly; DF had a really bad migraine when we arrived. Secondly; our hotel was extremely noisy so we had very poor sleep quality. Thirdly; the weather was freezing and really too cold for us to enjoy ourselves, we pretty much had to stay indoors most of the time.

As soon as we got off the plane DF started to feel unwell and got progressively worse during the taxi ride to our hotel. I could tell it was more than just a headache because he had to keep his eyes closed due to light hurting his head, had broken out in a cold sweat and was very clammy and feeling nauseous. The man who checked us in at our hotel was extremely friendly and helpful, giving us lots of advice about exploring Montreal, but poor DF just stood there leaning against the wall desperate to lie down and wishing he would hurry up and give us our keys!

Eventually we made it to our room and DF took some Panadol and lay down in the dark for a few hours until his headache passed. I just chilled out in the lounge area of our room and started reading some of the books we had bought on our trip. It was quite late by the time DF woke up and neither of us felt like going out for dinner. We remembered passing a McDonalds very close to our hotel, so DF walked down and picked up some takeaway for dinner. Not a particularly great meal but it took the edge off our hunger at least..

The next morning we had a delicious French breakfast in the restaurant/patisserie under our hotel, which was included with our stay. I now know if I ever travel to France I will most likely gain a considerable amount of weight!

We had one full day in Montreal and spent it exploring on foot. It was absolutely freezing and the streets were not surprisingly quite deserted. We checked out a few of the sights, and agreed that the city would be lovely in warmer weather. The buildings and the cobblestone roads were gorgeous.

I’m just going to post all of our decent Montreal photos in one hit. I can’t remember many details about exactly where we were etc.

We were excited that an individual snowflake looked exactly like what we’d imagined!

Eventually the cold drove us inside and we explored some of the shops. Many of them are connected underground which was great as this kept us warm. DF and I don’t speak any French but everybody we met was happy to speak English to us and we didn’t find the language a barrier at all. I can’t remember what we ate for lunch or dinner but I do remember really enjoying the food, and that there was a good variety of different/healthier options.

Next Up: Toronto

Day Eighteen – Toronto

We only had a very short time in Toronto, as it was really just a stopover on our way from Montreal to Niagara Falls. We would both really like to go back some day as it seems like a very nice city. I was wondering if it would also be a good base for visiting Prince Edward Island? Which is something I’ve always been keen to do. The first part of this day was spent travelling to Toronto on the train.

After arriving in Toronto we were firstly pleasantly surprised that although it was still cold it was not unbearably so. Our hotel was really lovely and on the harbour front. A big novelty for us was that our bed was a “sleep number” bed, which means that you can adjust the firmness of each side of the mattress using a remote control! We had a view of the CN tower from our room, which was particularly cool at night as it is lit up.

Awesome bed!

Once we settled in and played around with the sleep number bed we had a wander around the harbour front. Our first stop was PawsWay, which is a fantastic pet education/training centre next to our hotel. We had a lot of fun here, although it made us very homesick for our dog!

We watched some planes land at the airport at sunset, checked out the ice skating rink and got a kick out of seeing the boats frozen in the water.

As night fell we decided to have a walk through the CBD, including a browse through the Eaton Centre, which is a big shopping centre. Once again I’m a bit vague on what we did for dinner, but I do remember trying a glazed donut for the first time somewhere along our travels, which was delicious!

Here are some various shots of the tower during our evening as night fell.

We had a pretty early night as we had an early start the next day so we could spend as much time in Niagara Falls as possible.

Next: Niagara Falls!

Glad to see you back!!

Toronto sounds like it would be fun to explore, am looking forward to seeing your Niagara pics in the winter... I am still debating :lmao: so hopefully it helps me decide.

Thanks :goodvibes

Niagara Falls was so worth it for us! It was definitely one of my favourite parts of the trip and one of the most beautiful places I've ever visited. I'm going to really struggle narrowing down which photos to post..

Wow! Nice seeing snow in your pictures. Those are great shots of Toronto and the Tower you've got.

Looking forward to Niagara in winter....

Yaay-love reading the updates to the report and all the snowy shots. I have hopes of doing a circle trip one day taking in Niagara, Toronto, Montreal and Quebec. Am particulary interested in your Niagara Falls pics. We had friends a year ago who did it and basically hopped out the car, took one look and back in it was so bitterly cold but still so slack!! I just am not sure about all the development around it with this great natural wonder in the midst. Waiting to hear if you did all the "extras"!

Loving the updates and the photos! It has been really interesting comparing your trip report to the blog of a friend currently travelling around the same areas. They are fortunately safe having had to go to Pennsylvania for a brief detour to avoid Irene.

Anyway, the point is I am not sure now which time of the year I would like to go!

Thanks :goodvibes Next update is coming right now!

Oooh yay, another update. Love the snow photos. Makes me def want to visit in winter.

Thanks! We loved our winter trip but I guess ideally we'd all get to go and experience each season at least once; I'm thinking autumn in New England would be pretty cool at the moment! If only annual leave and travel costs were more manageable..

That sounds like a great trip idea! I wish we'd gotten to go to Quebec to see the ice hotel. I'm about to update with Niagara Falls now. It definitely was cold, but with the right clothing we managed just fine. We didn't find it too commercialised but we really stuck close to the actual falls themselves, tried to shut everything else out, and avoided the actual town area. I think being off season and quiet helped too.

Glad to hear your friends are safe! I've seen some pretty amazing photos of the East Coast this week after Irene hit..

We had such a great winter trip that I'm biased, but I think there are pros and cons to going at any time of year, I guess the only way to know for sure is to try and fit in at least one visit for each season ;)

Day Nineteen – Niagara Falls

We enjoyed our first room service of the trip the next morning, and had a tasty breakfast before catching a taxi to the train station. We then had an uneventful trip to Niagara Falls.

IMG_1485.jpg

Tasty breakfast

I was absolutely blown away by Niagara Falls. It is so stunningly beautiful and I would recommend a visit to anybody! I am so glad we went in winter as it was really quiet and the snow and ice is just gorgeous. I think I was speechless the first time I saw the falls themselves! We had one full day and one night in Niagara Falls (as we caught an early morning train from Toronto) and I think this was a great amount of time. We didn’t find it overly commercialised, but we mainly stayed close to the actual falls themselves, and the time of year (off season) may have also helped.

We splurged on our hotel room here and had a falls view room with a spa and a fireplace on the top floor. Our hotel (Sheraton Fallsview) was also the closest to the actual falls.

IMG_1544.jpg

The spa was a bit of a letdown, as it had more of a hydrotherapy than a romantic kind vibe, but the view from our room was just incredible. DF and I couldn’t tear ourselves away from the window and kept having to pinch ourselves that it was real! These next few are all taken from our hotel room window.

And the view from the other side:

IMG_1510.jpg

As soon as we checked in we headed straight to the falls. There isn’t much I can say except how beautiful it is! There are some interesting ice formations on the trees, lampposts etc. because of the constant spray of water from the falls.

We were so lucky to have beautiful sunny weather too. The next day was very snowy and overcast so we were very grateful we were able to spend the day outdoors. Here are just some of the many beautiful photos we took:

We had lunch at Tony Romas, and were the only patrons in the whole restaurant for about an hour or so, when coincidentally another Australian family showed up. We had a great time chatting to our waitress here who was very interested in learning about Australia (she got a kick out of seeing some Australian money) and also told us a lot about her life, and her take on the “USA versus Canada” rivalry. Our lunch was delicious too, we had ribs.

After lunch we walked across the Rainbow Bridge to view the falls from the USA side. It was also very beautiful, but I’d have to say the Canadian side is more spectacular!

IMG_1582.jpg

We then did the “behind the falls” attraction which was very worthwhile and another incredible view! You basically get to go to a viewing platform at the bottom of the falls, as well as have a look at some windows behind the falls. We didn’t get to see much anything through the windows though as the water was frozen solid.

IMG_1571.jpg

This was the closest we could get to the falls themselves since the Maid of the Mist doesn’t run in winter. There were other attractions we could have paid to do as well like a 3D movie, but really the falls themselves can’t be beaten!

Next we had a wander around the town itself. We didn’t really shop/do anything except explore, and weren’t particularly impressed with the Clifton Hills amusement area, although I’m sure kids would probably love it. As it started to get dark we headed back to our hotel to put on an extra layer of clothes as we knew it would be a cold night, but we didn’t intend to waste any of our time staying inside.

We had dinner at a casino buffet which we walked to, on the advice of our lovely waitress at lunch. It was very nice, and DF particularly liked the “make your own pasta” section. We’re not gamblers so we left straight after we’d eaten and went back towards the falls to enjoy the view by night. The falls are lit up from behind and equally as beautiful by night. We also loved the winter “festival of lights” along the waterfront, another big plus of visiting in winter! I was particularly excited by the Disney themed lights.

Just as we decided to call it a night and head back to our hotel to enjoy our spa and fireplace our wonderful day was topped off by a surprise fireworks display over the falls! We practically had the place to ourselves as well, probably due to the cold keeping many people inside. It was very romantic!

We then enjoyed a well earned spa and relaxed by the fireplace enjoying the view from our window some more before calling it a night.

This was probably one of my favourite days of our trip and I will definitely return some day!

Because I've run out of space for photos I'll also post a few separate photos in a new post since I just couldn't narrow them down any more.

Next Up: New York

You are definately enticing me to a winter visit!! Stunning photos!! Also interesting comparing to someone else's trip report (whose sig I confess I've forgotten-travelled with her family-another big trip) who saw it in warmer weather and did the extras-persuaded by her child! The difference in the views behind the falls from what I remember in particular is interesting. One day...

Stunning photos. I love the rainbow ones! The falls are magnificent and the view from your hotel is amazing!!

That is totally amazing!!! Friends of ours are doing an exchange teachers position in Canada and have been down to see the Falls in each season. They loved Winter too!!

The next morning we had a delicious French breakfast in the restaurant/patisserie under our hotel, which was included with our stay. I now know if I ever travel to France I will most likely gain a considerable amount of weight!

My fondest memories of Paris - Bread, wine, cheese, croissants.......

Loved the Niagara pics.We are going to be in New York in Dec 2012 - Is it worth an overnight side trip?

Great pictures of Niagara in winter. I love the ice formations. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks! As long as you have enough time to enjoy NYC I would definitely consider it. In December I imagine it would look very similar to our photos (which were from January), and I'm pretty sure they have the festival of lights then too. As long as you don't mind cold weather ;)

I have an odd question. As you talk about the landscape it makes me wonder how much you have traveled within Oz?

Having not been there it's hard for me know exactly what it's like. But doesn't it also have diversity. It goes from Rain Forest to desert. Very close to the equator to close to a pole. Snow to wamr ocean water.

Is it unlike the US and Australians don't traverse there country to take in the variety?

I think that because so many of our cities are relatively centralised on the East coast most people don't travel inland that much. Our highways, once you leave the capital cities and surrounds, are not that great and the distances, at least in the north of Queensland where I live, between towns are vast - you can go hours from one town to the next with nothing to see or do.

Also, our petrol is very expensive (approx $1.45 a litre as I write where I live) so it makes long distance car travel prohibitive. But, we've done some long distance Outback trips and love what we have come across and the experiences we've had but just wish fuel was so much cheaper so we can do it more often.

Yay! for San Diego Zoo. :) Great pics. Yay! for an authentic American Diner. What fun. I'm glad I've gotten through it all and am looking forward to more.

That's something we're looking forward to doing, too. Get off the main roads and see 'real' America and eat in diners.
