Are you an alcohol snob?

No snob here. I'm a big fan of two-buck chuck. In fact, I'll be driving the 20 miles to the nearest Trader Joe's on Monday to pick up a case of Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc. Beer I'm a little more fussy I like my IPA's and a few lagers. The only time I drink anything with hard alcohol in it is if I'm on a cruise. I may have a few umbrella drinks or martinis, but I have no idea what grade of alcohol they use.

The Charles Shaw is too pretentious insisting on using traditional corks in their wines. I prefer the Tablas Creek Patelin de Tablas in the 3L box.

As PP stated Costco puts their label on other brands. I’m pretty certain that Kirkland vodka is produced by Grey Goose
I posted that, too. I saw that, but also that Grey Goose denied it. Either way, it sometimes beat them in blind tests.

It's funny how so many hate IPA's. I hated beer until I tried an IPA. Hoppy is good.

A well balanced hoppy beer is good. A poorly made hoppy beer will cause massive bitter beer face.

I am not a beer person, but I have formed opinions from what I have tried. The thing I don't understand is Michelob Ultra. It pretty much tastes like a beer flavored seltzer water or something. It seems like when you go to some outdoor festivity, everybody is walking around with one of those in their hand.

I don't get the smugness about not drinking a mass-produced American adjunct lager like Bud or Miller.
I drank that stuff when I was too young to explore more. It doesn't taste good to us so why drink it. I don't need to drink alcohol so badly that I'll drink something I don't like the taste of. What's the point in that?

My mom will only really drink bud light but in some ways I think it could be generational. We're way more into finding stuff than settling for something I guess? Part of the fun to me is trying out different flavors.

I never really drank much until I was in the service. Even then in Vietnam, when everyone around me was slop faced, I couldn't drink more than a beer or two. I don't know why, just didn't want to get dead because I couldn't function, I guess. Before Vietnam I did some beer drinking every Friday night at Shakey's Pizza and got a tad tipsy drinking dark beer and singing along with the projected words and piano music until the place closed. Normally my favorite beer was Schlitz (the beer that made Milwaukee famous). And my wine choices were between Boone's Farm Apple Wine and Boone's farm Strawberry Fields.

After I started my civilian career, I felt obligated to go out, at least once a week after work, with my boss. Even then I stopped when my lips got numb and never really craved alcohol. It was sometime within the first 5 years that I decided it was just a waste of money and every unpleasant incident I had to deal with always revolved around alcohol and just decided it wasn't something for me. I already had the nicotine monkey on my back and didn't want anything additional. I will occasionally have a drink with friends now, and even went to a wine tasting at at family owned vineyard in Tuscany when I went to Europe, which was interesting, but way, way out of my element. In some sense I am not a snob and do not have any problem with someone drinking responsibly but there is no appeal to me for any of it.

About 6 years ago I remembered that I used to like Bloody Mary's so I bought a pint of Smirnoff's Vodka. I still have it and counting evaporation it is only down about an inch from the top. I discovered that I didn't like it all that much. There was a point where I was very fond of Bacardi and Coke and another time loved Coke and cherry flavored Vodka but that was years ago (20 or more). Now my beverage of choice is Unsweet Iced Tea which is no longer accompanied by a frowny face here in the south since they all think I must be diabetic so they allow me to stay here. I can't tell you how many times I was told that somethings, like Scotch for example, is an acquired taste and my thought was if I have to force myself to like something why would I want to do that. If it's something that I enjoy instantly and doesn't require acquiring a taste for, that will be what I will settle upon.

In summary, I am happy that I never got the feeling that I needed alcohol in my life and eventually kicked the nicotine monkey to the curb and now I have possibly evolved into the most boring person on earth.

So Snobby - yup ! I call out my liquor - I tell the bartender what brand I want when I order my drink I pay for I don’t normally take the house liquor so you can call me snobby I’m gonna say I have taste and I prefer the brand I like and not the cheap house liquor. It’s for beer. Yeah I’ll call out my brand on that one too. I just don’t consider this being snobby. It’s no different than people preferring Coke over Pepsi is that make you snobby if you prefer namebrand over store brand??!
I’m not gonna sit and judge the person who preferred Miller beer even though I’d like Tim that would be wrong, so I’m not going to to each his own. I just don’t think it makes somebody snobby to prefer their brand over a house brand.

Before I quit drinking, there were 2 of me.

One of my only wanted "the good stuff" and would buy and order top shelf, only, when around other people.

The other one of me was the alcoholic who drank whatever had alcohol, no matter how it tasted. Which is why I was going through a liter of Tito's every other day

That said, what I enjoyed the taste of, the most, was IPAs (I can't recall the name of it, but a triple hop from a local brewery was my favorite!). We'd go to the craft liquor store down the street every other day and get a case or two of whatever they had new. It was an expensive habit.

Gin and tequila were my hard of choice. Dirty gin martini was the ultimate for me. I still crave them. Bombay Sapphire or.....ugh, forgot the other name.

Tequila, I'd buy a $$$$$ bottle of it for my birthday each year and then, at s gathering at some point, wed play pass the bottle. So smooth.

I miss the taste of certain alcohols so much.

95 dollars is hardly pretentious. Anything over 5 bucks is out of my league.
Its the cork. They feel some bizarre need to use corks which are completely pretentious and the absolute worst containers for wine. Boxes are far superior for wine.

Maybe kind-of a snob? I have brands of alcohol I prefer and will ask for my coctails made with these. If they don't have that in stock I will ask what the house pour is before I say "ok." It's funny, though. My parents drank Four Roses whiskey because it was cheap, but these days some of their products are considered pretty much top-shelf, so who knows? I don't drink vodka at all, as I can taste nothing but alcohol in a vodka based drink (and believe me, I have tried a LOT of different vodkas to see if I can get past this, as vodka based cocktails are "big" right now). Bourbon is my spirit of choice, and either Makers Mark or Buffalo Trace are my preferred brands.

Beer? I vastly prefer microbrews or local taproom brewery beers. I can't remember the last time we bought American brewed cans/bottles in the grocery store, although when/if we do, it'd probably be Sam Adams. We live in a town with three microbreweries, so we are most likely to either drink in one of them, of stop and bring home a growler/crowler. I am fine with IPAs and sours, as well as a plethora of other styles. One thing that will keep me from ordering a beer in a brewery/taproom is if they won't let me taste it first. I don't need a 4oz pour, just a splash to make sure i am going to like it. If they don't want me to LIKE their beer and say good things about their brewery, what does it say about their attitude towards their business?

Wine- I prefer bolder reds but also like sangria. Not a fan of pink (except white zin) or most whites; they are too acidic for me. I like a sweeter white, like a Gewurztraminer or a blend, BUT if I am at a party and the wine isn't true rot-gut, I'll drink it.

To prefer it, I get. To act like only some unsophisticated newbie could ever like a mass produced American adjunct lager kind of irks me.

I do remember playing blackjack in Reno as a German (sounding) guy kept on knocking back one Corona after another. That I found odd.

We can get samples at brewpubs, but there’s apparently a limit in state law in size and pours. Might be like an ounce per sample and three total, but nobody from California ABC is watching over with a measuring vial.

Sometimes I just go to Fieldwork (it’s a great local brewery) and get three samples even I’m just buying a single can to go or even walk out without buying anything. They’ve really upped their can game when they previously had limited cans. It may not have been the best beer I’ve had from them (Destroyer of Galaxies was amazing but only on tap) but this was the best can design.

Double dry hopped hazy IPA with 9.5% ABV. This really packs a punch. Tried it once and have seen it since. But I kept the can (this isn’t my picture) because of its awesomeness.

When I was in London a lot of the bars sold Corona.

When I was working for a brewery is was one ounce up to 4 but it could have changed in the past 5 years.

I love Fieldwork. They have a great variety of beer. The closest one is 90 minutes away though. I’ve been to 5 of their 8 locations. Wish they would put one a little closer.

I've been to five of their locations (Berkeley, San Mateo, Napa, Sacramento, San Ramon) over the years, but I live near the Berkeley brewery. That place just reeks (very nicely) of malted barley. There was another brewery (with brewpub a few blocks away - Pyramid on Gilman. That's currently a couple of businesses including a Tesla service center. I haven't tried Gilman Brewing though.

I remember one summer I was taking my kid to a day camp at UC Village and the drop off point was a block away from Fieldwork. One day I wasn't at work and just went to Fieldwork and got a pour. It was like 2 hours before I was going to be driving.

Well I don't get having an uppitnes about it but I do think some people don't branch out because it's what they know or what's just around them. I was like that when I was really young. Wasn't until I started up with my husband's coworkers that we all started branching out. Bud light was in the fridge growing up so it's the only kind I really thought about and I think enough people are like that where it's just what they know.

Then again my sister-in-law's ex husband used to down 30 packs of natty lite all the time but just to get drunk not for the taste.
