Official 2019 Star Wars Rival Run Weekend

Yep just changing the theme from Dark Side to rivals. They are likely doing this because there is no light side race in Disneyland.
This makes me so sad! Star Wars weekend at Disneyland was my favorite runDisney weekend. Clearly it's not returning in 2019 (not that anyone expected it back this soon...) But, do we think that this change could be short term? Just for a year or two? Or, is this possibly a sign that Star Wars weekend at Disneyland Resort will never return? Maybe I'm just reading too much into this announcement...

May the Fourth be with you all!

Heh I was hoping they would do this bc just having the Dark Side half is weird. Good work Disney! Wonder if they have different medals depending on if you choose the light or dark side.

Anything can be short term with Disney. I wouldn't worry too much as this weekend for runDisney doesn't sell as well as other weekends and the fact that there is no light side probably gave them a push for change.

I love that they're doing this! The minor tweaks each DS weekend have kept it fresh, IMO. My money's on a spinner medal for the Rival Challenge: Dark on one side, Light on the other. Turn to whichever side you ran for. ♥
The first Rebel Challenge medal had that theme. Is this theme really new? Or...just new to WDW? I vote for the latter. I always preferred the light versus dark theme myself.

I'm optimistic about it coming back in 2020 but it's just a hunch.

IDK anything about the DLR races, as I've never been, but it would definitely be new for WDW. So far, WDW's SW races have been 100% Dark Side themed.

Now I'm really sad I can't run the half marathon. Still debating the 10K before I have to drive to Port Canaveral.......

Before the Dark Side race was introduced, the Star Wars race in CA was just Star Wars themed (versus Light Side). The original Rebel Challenge medal is a spinner with Darth on one side and Yoda on the other. It's one of my favorites!

Am I the only one that was hoping this would be something like you actually get to register for the "side" you are running for and get a bib themed to that and a specific corresponding medal? Or that there would be two halfs - maybe one night and one day? I know that would be logistically difficult especially with Toy Story land and Pandora needing the parks open so much and the construction all over the place limiting courses. But it would be fun to see them lower the caps (just a tiny teeny bit) and make 2 races and see which side actually "wins" based on chip time. Could be a way to motivate people to pick up their training as well... (which would work even if they just let you pick a "team" during registration and give different themed bibs).

It would be very cool, but I just cannot see rD being able to pull it off, lol!

Awhhh man, we were planning on doing wine and dine in 2019 (as we haven’t done it before) but as big Star Wars fans this is gonna be hard to pass up!

You could be reading too much into it. Given that they announced the Star Wars Virtual Half for 2019 and the Kessel Run if you register for the virtual half and finish the Star Wars Rival Half at WDW tells me that they at least want to bring Star Wars back to Disneyland.

I for one had no issues with it being and remaining the Darkside. It's a theme and didn't require an offsetting Lightside during the years where they aren't doing DL races (which I am sooooooo hoping they bring back). But what was weird this last time was that so many of the characters stops along the race were Lightside! At least match the theme and now they'll easily be able to do that.

Joining in! I'm really hoping I can make it in 2019 - it will be my first SW weekend (I've only done Marathon Weekend). I MUST have SW medals to add to my collection! The odds are in my favor as our spring break is that week, and I'm pretty good at talking DH into a Disney trip. I'm also excited that my kids will be able to experience a runDisney race.

Time to start budgeting...

Anytime they make changes it's cool, keeps things fresh, but I have never thought of Rivals in Star Wars. I guess I always think of rivals like Rivals week in football, friendly, more than I want to wipe you out. Han vs Greedo I guess could work, ha! Or I'm sure they are thinking more of Kylo vs Rey.

Picking sides beforehand would be cool, but people (myself included) would want both, all the bling/bibs/whatnot. I'm sure I'm out as planning on marathon and wine & dine in '19. I want to see different characters out at SW, like come on I know they have Kit Fisto as I have pics with him :)

I'm actually thinking of breaking out of my marathon weekend bubble and trying this in 2019! To the extent that I've sent out requests for room resssies for that weekend. My original goal for early 2019 was a spring training trip in March or the Star Wars weekend. Full disclosure, I'm not a Star War's fan but would like to run the different 1/2 course and the 10K as well. Plus, flower and garden will be in full swing [unintended baseball pun]. Still on the fence [intended baseball pun] but it's fun to get the wheels spinning!
