A Wander around the West Midlands and North East Wales…

I’ll start by saying I don’t have a good record of completing Trip reports and still have one…or two…. in an unfinished state. One was started just because I wanted to report the eventful beginning. With much prodding I got up until mid way through (after skipping over part) but in any case…I will start with this disclaimer before little miss lord of the TR (you know who you are) says anything.

Ok so I recently went to the UK for a couple of weeks to visit my DBF. We based ourselves in Shropshire and did sightseeing around there. My DBF knows this area quite well and seemed to enjoy showing me around this part of the world.
Part of my reason for reporting on this trip is to show you guys what is in the area. I’m not going to tell you exactly what DBF said about Cardiff…but suffice to say he thinks the North of Wales is much nicer…and as a pom
pom or *pommie - an Australian nickname given to English people. Somewhat derogatory in nature the term can be used in both a positive and negative context. There is a debate as to how the word came about, some believe the original term "POME" is an anacronym for "Prisoner Of Mother England" the title given to convicts sent to the early Australian penal colonies. In a reverse of circumstances Australian's joke that it is the English who are now the prisoners in their own country (mother England) as the Australian lifestyle is widely regarded as better than England's.
he says that the English aren’t terribly welcome in Cardiff. (I don’t know the details…it’s similar to the hatred between football clubs over there???)

Anyway. This area doesn’t feature generally on the whirlwind trips Aussies make to the Mother land. So I’ll show you what’s here in case you do think it might appeal.

The order of destinations was sort of planned but also to do with my exhaustion levels after travelling for 30 hours.

My journey - For those interested I flew United airlines because due to the merger I managed to work through an anomaly in their system to score a trip SYD-LHR for $1700. (Although interestingly they then advertised as low as $1350 for this up until March but I couldn’t have gotten the dates I wanted and the connection through LAX is much longer than SFO’s 6 hours.)
This was the same cost as flying Virgin Atlantic (which was who I was going to go with if only because they fly about the tightest connection around) but United gave me more useful mileage points and TWO 23kg bags. Oh…and much more relaxed carry-on baggage allowance. If it fits…they’re happy. As opposed to the witch at QANTAS who charged me $100 for 5kg excess baggage for my HK-SYD flight home last time  and forced me to check in my gorgeous brand new carry on roll on  Even though my ticket bought through Air France GAVE ME the 12kg allowance vs QANTAS 7kg.

My thoughts on United to USA are unchanged. I had lovely flights with good service. However I found the British based United crew somewhat lacking in personality and service. The “Breakfast” served before arriving in LHR was a continental style with a pastry, yoghurt and something else. Not bad really. Just not what I’m accustomed too. It also did NOT include alcohol despite being an International flight. Strangely people happily parted with $5-$7pp for a teeny bottle of spirits or wine. But THIS causes delays as they only accept credit cards.
As to WHY this different type of crew is the case it could be because the approach to becoming a flight attendant in the USA is different to the UK. Many people who become a flight attendant in the UK do it as a temporary passing through job. A friend of DBF did it for a few years before becoming a paramedic. Many women do it to find and marry a pilot (no joke), and many do it to get a few years of travelling around seeing places. However you DO have to be there a few years before you get to go to the ‘good’ places. In the USA becoming a flight attendant is a career. As many say United have an older crew often. Which I really appreciate actually. They can be lovely and quirky and actually help well with small children. They also know their job well and can work VERY fast and VERY efficiently.
Someone DBF knew worked for BMI and they had to clean the aircraft largely themselves at each turn around on the short hops around the UK. Which is why they come around SO MANY TIMES to collect rubbish as the more they have to do after you get off, the more chance of a delay in turn around.
SPEAKING of which…all my flights were delayed. The ones to and from LHR the most. Why? Late arriving aircraft. Now I don’t so much mind delays…except when they keep changing HOW delayed it is.

My layover in SFO was to be 6 hours each way, which of all airports to be ‘stuck in’ while in the USA, this is one of the best. But I chose to try out the United Club to see what it was like. Now those expecting something like what you find in Hong Kong’s travellers lounge. You will be SORELY disappointed. I do think the United club is over priced and depending on how you’re travelling probably NOT worth the money. But as I was travelling alone I think it was worth the $39. If only for the large Disabled toilets, which catered for me and my carry on and would give you space to change and have a cursory wash should you desire. There is no shower or place to ‘securely’ store your bags but there is a decent amount of space and a variety of ‘sections’ which means you can spread out and there was usually one fairly quiet area.
If you are considering using it you can buy a use onetime anytime pass online which is valid at any United Club for up to a year for $39. $50 is what they charge if you rock up at the door. It includes free wifi (although the standard SFO wifi is pretty good) and as much alcohol as you choose to drink.
The “food” is only snacks such as Walkers shortbread, crackers and cheese, fruit (which I think was nice…having fresh bananas), things like trail mix, and my personal favourite…tiny carrots the size of carrot sticks. They were literally tiny carrots. Not sliced up carrots to make carrot sticks. They were in baggies and cold and I had great delight munching on them.
The non-alcoholic drinks were various sodas as well as lemonade and ‘juice’.

After my lounging in the club before my SFO-LHR flight I wandered down to the gate (just around the corner). I knew the flight was delayed but it had been listed with a new departure time for over an hour so I figured they actually had worked out when they would depart. I showed up 45mins before that time only to find that they were still waiting to finish cleaning the aircraft and the flight crew hadn’t even been allowed on board yet. :headache:
I always try and get to the gate at or before the listed boarding time as with my Premier status I get to board just after Business class…sometimes with depending on the mood of the people scanning your ticket. This means I KNOW my carry on will get to sit just above me ;) and I can get all organised.

So after waiting some more we finally boarded and took off. The actual flight deck crew were Americans and one I saw getting on looked like a 70s porn star or cast member of Airport :lmao: ….depending on which analogy you prefer. DBF prefers the former…despite being an aircraft spanner…but if you miss the point of the analogy. He had the thick glossy hair and mo.
The flight was fairly smooth. The landing was good. Although we did circle heathrow about three times and taxi around the airport for quite a while. Punishment for being late…
I always feel safe in the hands of United flight deck crew. I’ve never felt nervous of the quality of their flying skills. I quite often see them get on board and there is always a senior captain who really looks the part and when you hear them (through channel 9 on the inflight system) talking to the tower they are always confident and professional.

ANYWAY…
My beloved Aircraft spanner (a term used for those who like watching aircraft take off and land) was tracking all my flight movements and being updated on my flight delays through the flight track app on his phone and was waiting for me in arrivals with a nice warm hug. From LHR we drove west…and so the trip began.

Aside: I timed my trip largely to work in with DBF’s and my own work schedules…but I also timed it very neatly in terms of weather. The previous weekend they had had quite a bad snow storm and many flights in and out of Heathrow had been cancelled. When I arrived it was still quite low temperatures and snow on the ground (because it hadn’t yet melted) but we had pretty good weather overall for the two weeks.

Stop one was the RAF museum in Cosford. This is part of an actual RAF base and although I’m not quite as obsessed and fascinated with aircraft as DBF I quite enjoyed myself. Entry is free, however their parking isn’t, but it wasn’t much.
There are 2 main parts. The RAF museum itself and the newer building for the Coldwar museum. These next two entries are going to be pictures from the RAF museum part. I could have culled the photos more but I think they are lovely photos so here they are. I do enjoy an aircraft or two and have visited the Boeing factory near Seattle twice now.

See…snow still on the ground…

001.jpg

As always DBF was behind the lens. It’s always my duty for any trip he isn’t around for but when he is around he is the photographer. Although I would take some iphone photos to send back home to update on our merry adventures…
Although I’ll have to download the photos from my camera as well because the building the Cold war museum is in is quite impressive…to me…and so I was taking quite a few photos. Although they PROBABLY won’t be of interest to you guys unless you are interested in structure and trusses… :scratchin
I was mocked mercilessly for taking more interest in the building than the displays…

Sorting through photos I regularly find these candid shots. Unrequested although some are fun and capture the spirit of the moment. As you can also see I was only wearing a Kathmandu type fleece over a t-shirt. This was because most of the stuff is inside and I tend to overheat if it’s too stuffy. When we finished and were going back to the car I got somewhat windswept (and it wouldn’t be the last time) but all I ever needed over this was a lightweight parka/jacket.

DBF was quite taken by these statues. Surrounding on the walls is a timeline of the history of flight included with other developments through the years. Like when the first walkman was released. Etc.

Those planes sure don't look like United planes to me...but they are the right vintage. :thumbsup2

Whoo Hoo! I am the first. Okay bad word, finish, unfinished.:rolleyes1

Maybe you can finish the other one with pics. I would really love to see the rest of the ship.

Now onto this one. I dont like flying, sorry about your delays. That is no fun. But I cant wait to see this one, I may never get to that part of the world so I have to live it through someone. ;) I really like the history of the planes, and I dont think I could sit like that in one of those planes. I will let Chris see this as he is a history type person. Great start, keep it coming. I want to hear more. :thumbsup2:cheer2::cheer2:

Hehehe, I always love your airline commentary, I like it the most out of all of your half finished trip reports.

Yup...
Old and reliable!!!

Much of these aircraft are actual prototypes. It's really quite impressive the collection they have and that these aircraft are still in such good condition...as some are literally the only prototype ever made.

We actually saw one aircraft being 'serviced' :thumbsup2

AIRCRAFT!!! AIRCRAFT!!!

A plane is something you use to shave an inch off the bottom of a door

But I'm glad you appreciate the images. :goodvibes

Hehehe, I always love your airline commentary, I like it the most out of all of your half finished trip reports.
Why thank you Ms Shuttergirl. :cool1:

Good or bad I report honestly on my flights. As I say these SFO-LHR and LHR-SFO flights did not impress me as I didn't like the 'system' their crew used for distributing beverages and meals. It was very disjointed and disorganised. I didn't like the delays I encountered.
I'm happy reporting this honestly. I don't gloss over these facts.

I'm tempted to consider Virgin Atlantic again but I'm really getting serious miles now which is certainly a nice and very worthwhile thing....
It's got nothing to do with the flights themselves at all. It's simply about travel time. BUT...then again I really appreciate the extra legroom in Economy Plus :rolleyes1

(And yes I'm well aware of what CAN happen having lost a LOT when Ansett went kaput...)

The Cold War Museum is a new part of the RAF museum at Cosford.
I was quite impressed with it overall. 1 – great building. 2 – great design and placement of aircraft. 3 – well thought out mini displays. For free it ain’t a bad few hours entertainment.

As it was “half term” (school holidays) in the UK there were a few kids around with their parents, but it certainly wasn’t crowded. There were some nice kids with grandparents too which was sweet. I would actually think it would be worse with school groups around.

You will see some ‘again’ from other angles, as it is very hard to consistently get your collection of shots in one go. It’s a very clever layout. So I’ll just go in a fairly chronological order rather than sort further.
For structural and lay of the land reasons this is a split level building so there are some photos looking down to the lower level as we went along…

Darn, I thought I was the first to reply on your TR. Oh well, second I was last. :lmao: No, your not a geek, I like odd things. Things that people just dont get why I would like it. You never really think about all the different types of aircraft the military uses.

That bomb is huge. Its also amazing how big aircraft is, and can get off the ground. Thanks for sharing. Chris will like this as well. Please keep it coming! Great job!

Aside from the engineering pictures of the meccano set, those pictures of the pla.....er.....aircrafts and the one tank were really interesting.
How long did it take to get round the museum and were you able to walk up and touch any of the pla....er....aircrafts?

:scratchin Okay. The pictures of the meccano set were fantastic too.

I've been trying to remember. I think we paid 2 pounds for 4 hours parking. And we did it in that time including a stop for hot chocolate in the cafe afterwards.
That included strolling and photographing time though. I would think you could do it in 2-3 hours. Depending on if there's something the kids want to do that takes time. They did have one of those flight simulator machines. A fairly typical one. Which made both our stomachs turn just at the thought of it. But that would take time (and $$...although I don't remember the price being too steep).

Glad you enjoyed the meccano set too :woohoo: I've copped enough flack about that thanks :lmao:
And I'm glad to see you LEARNING to call them AIRCRAFT!!

Thanks, Chris enjoyed seeing all the aircraft. It is something my FIL would enjoy as well.

If anyone is curious we spent Valentines day at the RAF museum :lmao:
The ultimate romantic destination…
But he did cook me a lovely dinner

Ok now back to what was actually day one. As it was still a bit chilly neither of us were up for photographing planning to take more photos later but didn’t get around to it. Day one was visiting nearby Shrewsbury…food ponce heaven. LOTS of foodie shops. Cheeses, wine etc.
This is a village with quite a large shopping district. There is a vast array of independent shops where you can find all sorts of things. I highly recommend stopping into here and allowing for some wander time. Some people spend the day here so there is a free parking area, which is park and ride. Personally I think it’s worth just taking the normal parking fee for one of the area carparks, which are interspersed around. I don’t see enough for spending more than a few hours unless you are going to actively searching for clothes and stuff and need trying on time.
Of course many of you aren’t fans of driving in other countries…but do remember that these guys do drive on the correct side of the road :lmao:

Some quick iphone photos I snapped…

The railway station. Apparently the building is pretty much disused and in poor condition. It is DBF’s hope they will restore it. Sadly even if something gets a National Monument status there is no need to restore it. They’ll let it fall to pieces. All they WILL do is make sure if you DO touch it you must meet ALL their rules and regulations… :headache:

And yes…this historically was a lane for such activities. It is where the prostitutes were found.
NOW…it is a place of lovely little quirky boutique shops.

And yes…I ALWAYS end up at a Starbucks…

IMG_3282.jpg

The day after the RAF was ‘shopping’ day at the Bullring in Birmingham. The weather was still a bit chilly and rainy so not really any photos. I also wasn’t thrilled with the shops. But I’m glad I went. Lunch was nice at Pizza Express who use a lovely thin crust with lots of topping.
I did buy myself a Radley handbag

These photos are from the ‘middle’ of the bullring area. It is a bit complex the history of the site but a quick google with show you it if you are interested.

This is Selfridges. It is something of a modern architectural statement clad by these aluminium “buttons”. One of the reasons for no more photos after this is because of what happened after I entered the store. Apparently the way to stop terrorism is to stop people taking photos inside. Given my job I could have likely gotten ‘permission’ if I’d had a letter from the institute but I couldn’t be bothered being pissed off enough as it was.
There’s already thousands of photos of the inside of this store online...

If you are looking for shopping in the UK beyond the high street in London and are mobile might I suggest “Bluewater” which is south of London. It is a more American style shopping centre/mall and I really enjoyed it.

It's been awhile since I was in Birmingham (16 years!) and it certainly looks like they've upgraded the shopping area! Is that where DBF lives? I have family in Birmingham :).

Looking forward to hopefully a few more posts as I love Wales and am interested to hear and see what you did there :).

Yes it has been upgraded :lmao:

There is still streets and malls off the bullring. This is actually where T.M. Lewin is found. So there are plenty of other shops OUTSIDE the bullring too.

DBF has lived in a few places but no...he don't live in Birmingham :lmao: I don't think you could pay him to live there. What can I say...he's picky...but he does adore Sydney :rolleyes1
He lives (currently) near Telford.

As for Wales...coming up!!!
