Transatlantic Adventures

What a great day Corinna, and fabulous photos with all the characters. Hosting a jewellery making workshop is a lovely idea

I look forward to your next installments :)

Oh Corrina, you have got some fantastic pictures:thumbsup2 I especially like the ones of you and Graham with the Magic backdrop:love::love:

Really looking forward to reading morepopcorn::popcorn::

Yes, they are silver Mary Jane Crocs. I love my Mary Jane Crocs, too and have them in all kinds of different colours.

I know that you cannot see them under my formal night dress, but keep an eye out from photos that were taken in the evenings. The shoes that I wear then are actually Crocs, too. People never can believe this.

Corinna

I believe it. Crocs are so comfy, why not wear them. That's why I was asking about the silver ones. They look a little more dressy. I'll be shopping for them next spring.

Fab update, I hope they do offer the Mojito tasting as I would love that one!!!

Great pics, looking forward to reading more.

Brilliant trip report so far. It looks like you had a great time! :)

Hi Corrina,

this is a great trip report - it is so nice to be able to relive it all again.

I'd just like to say your Jewellery class was fantastic (i am still wearing my necklace a lot) - thank you for running it.

Also i agree Claire is the best photographer ever- we looked for her every day and made sure we had had as many photos as possible done by her.

looking forward to reading the rest. :goodvibes

Day 5

As per usual, I had set the wake up call for 7:00 AM and also as per usual, I was wide-awake before then. This was the day that we would be in Gibraltar. We were supposed to be docked quite early so I was surprised when we were still underway when I woke up.

Once Graham was up as well, we headed up to the gym for the stretching class. This time round, we stayed in the gym and it was a tight squeeze. The blinds were also down, which made this even more depressing. Our instructor explained that as the gym is exactly above the Bridge, the blinds had to remain closed as the lights would otherwise confuse the captain and the officers.

Once the stretching class was over, we headed down to Lumiere's to get some breakfast. Graham had fresh fruit with Granola and yoghurt and I had a kind of Mango Smoothie with Granola followed by Eggs Benedict and Hash Browns.

After breakfast, we grabbed our things and headed out. I have to say I was not entirely ready for a port day. I had only just got on the Magic and was not ready to get off again.

I had originally booked a shore excursion through Disney. I really wanted to do a dolphin cruise. It was not cheap for a two-hour tour ($69 per person) and they could only offer me an afternoon tour. A few weeks before the cruise, somebody on the cruise meet thread posted a link from which you could book various excursions and activities in Gibraltar. They offered the dolphin cruise with the same operator that Disney was using for £20 per person or a combination ticket with a return ticket on the cable car for £24 per person. Better still, I could book a 10:00 tour. So I booked the combination ticket and cancelled the Disney excursion.

When we got to the terminal building, we picked up a map of Gibraltar. The Ferry Terminal, where the boat would leave from, did not look very far from the cruise port. We started walking and indeed, it did not take us long until we were in the general vicinity of the Ferry Terminal according to the map. There was a restaurant nearby and I decided to check if they knew where we had to go. It turned out that we were really close, but that the Ferry Terminal was hiding behind a petrol station. We got there in plenty of time, checked in and then sat by the boat dock to watch the world go by.

Soon it was time to get on the boat. There were two other couples from our Cruise Meet Thread as well. When we headed out to the Bay of Gibraltar, we went right past the Magic so I could not resist taking plenty of photos.

The Bay of Gibraltar is decidedly not pretty. There are loads of container ships parked there and also what looked like drilling platforms of some kind. Suddenly it started to rain. We were sitting outside at the front of the boat. First it was only a few drops, but then a whole downpour came with thunder and lightning. At that stage I headed under cover. As soon as the rain eased off enough that you could actually see more than a few inches in front of you, the captain announced that dolphins had been sighted. At that stage I headed back outside even though it was still raining. Initially, there were about half a dozen dolphins, but soon we were surrounded. We saw mainly Common Dolphins, but there was one Bottle-nosed Dolphin with them who got herself adopted into the pod. The captain reckoned that there were over 200 dolphins and I well believe it. They were everywhere. It was so much fun to watch them surfing the bow wave and racing the boat. Some of the dolphins followed us until we had nearly reached the entrance of the port.

We had heard before we got on the boat that the cable car was closed due to high winds. We still headed towards the centre of Gibraltar. We saw some pretty buildings on the way, but on the whole, I was bitterly disappointed with Gibraltar. It just felt like a down at heel British market town. Even a lot of the high-end jewellery stores looked tacky. When we got to the end of town nearest the cable car, there was a sign that this was closed. We walked a little further and then turned around. I had quite wanted to see the monkeys and Graham offered that we could take a taxi up to the rock. I did not want to see the monkeys that badly and declined the offer. I know that he was not to keen on the monkeys. We turned around and headed back to the ship. I later found out that the cable car reopened shortly after we turned back, but I still have no regrets.

We walked back to the port and headed up to deck 9 to get some lunch at Topsiders. We managed to get a table outside and just enjoyed sitting in the sun while we were having our lunch. The food was nothing special on the whole, but they did some Butter Chicken, which was out of this world.

After lunch, we headed back to the cabin to drop off our stuff and ended up having a nap. I know that I most certainly needed this after a stressful few weeks at work and a busy time on the ship.

Once we were awake, Graham headed off to the gym. I did the first of my Fish Extender runs. I had a selection of magnets printed from Vistaprint. I had the best intentions of giving those out on the first day, but did not get around to doing so until that afternoon. I was a little annoyed that some people signed up for the Fish Extender exchange and did not even have a Fish Extender. A lot of us had very fancy Fish Extenders, but that is not necessary. Others just had a canvas bag or gift bag and that worked really well. As long as there was something by the door to put the gifts in, it was all good, but it really annoyed me that some people had nothing at all.

Once I got my exercise out of the way by way of Fish Extender Run, I headed down to the atrium for some more character photos. I managed to get photos with Lilo and Stitch, Goofy and Max, Terk, Sorcerer Mickey, Snow White and Dopey and Pluto.

Stitch is one of my favourite characters and he is definitely the character I always get the best interaction with. I had a beautiful photo taken with Stitch on the Med cruise, which I had printed on a wallet. I really wanted to show this to Stitch, but was not sure how much the characters can actually see. I was wondering how I could ask the character escort this question without spoiling things for the children that were around me. In the end I explained about the wallet and said that I know very little about alien experiments like Stitch and wondered how good his eyesight is. I was assured that he can see very well and would love to see anything with him on it.

In between photos, I headed to Guest Services. We had received little cards with our onboard credit the night before, but $200 were missing. We had received a letter from DCL at the beginning of the year saying that as loyal customers, we would get $100 per person. Fortunately I had brought this letter. I queried this and was asked for the letter. I handed it over and the member of staff tried to contact head office, but could not get through. In the end they took a photocopy of the letter and said they would contact me once they had spoken to head office. While I was there, I also dropped off a pillowcase that I had embroidered with Stitch and my name and some Sharpies. The pillowcase was meant to be signed by the characters. I did this on the last cruise, but Stitch never signed it. So this time round, I precisely stated what characters I wanted.

I had arranged to meet Graham by the adult pool at 18:00 so once all the photos were taken, I went back to the cabin to get changed into my swim suit. When I got to the pool, there was nobody there apart from the two of us. We had a nice swim and then headed for the Rainforest Room to relax for a bit.

I went back to the cabin to get changed. I have a red dress with white polka dots that looks a bit like Minnie’s traditional dress. I had waited for Minnie to be out for photos in the evening and noticed that she would be out after dinner. So I put on my Minnie Dress.
I still had a little time to spare so I browsed in the shops. Suddenly they had the Med cruise scrapbooks back in stock. I was very please as they were reduced down to $5.99. When we sailed in April, they were $30. So I quickly grabbed one. I was even more pleased when I was told that an additional discount applied and I ended up paying $2.48.

I went downstairs to have my photo taken with Cinderella and Suzy. I am not really too keen on the face characters, but for Suzy, I was willing to accept having Cinderella in the photo as well.

3153009.jpg

Once I had my photo taken, I took my scrapbook back to the cabin and met up with Graham in the hallway. We headed down to dinner together.

Today we had the first of the rotational dinners. We were in Lumiere's this time round. True to form, Graham let our server choose, but this time he gave him one restriction, as he does not like Polenta. He ended up with Escargot, Tomato and Basil Soup and Lamb Shank with Cabbage Rolls. Our server had substituted the Polenta that should have come with this dish with Mashed Potatoes. I do not like any of the appetizers on this menu so I had both the French Onion Soup and the Tomato and Basil Soup. For my main course, I had Grilled Beef Tenderloin with Olive Oil Mashed Potatoes, Bacon-wrapped Green Beans and a Mustard Madeira Sauce. For dessert, I had Grand Marnier Soufflé and Graham had Crème Brulee with Berries.

After dinner, I had my photo with Minnie taken. Unfortunately she was in her nautical dress and not in her traditional dress, but she got very excited when she saw my dress. I had so much fun.

Once I had my photo taken with Minnie, we headed back to our cabin, where we found a towel bunny. I took a photo and put him somewhere safe before retiring for the night.

Great day! Shame you weren't so keen on Gibraltar but having 200 dolphins swimming alongside your boat must have been amazing!

Claire is not only a very talented photographer, but also a very nice person. I will so miss her on the Wonder. She has been an important part of 4 of our cruises. Unfortunately her days on the Magic might well be numbered as well. She got engaged while she was on vacation and she and her fiance (who is one of the bartenders at Promenade Lounge) are thinking about returning back to the UK and generally settling down.

Great day! Shame you weren't so keen on Gibraltar but having 200 dolphins swimming alongside your boat must have been amazing!

Amazing does not even begin to cover it.

Another great day! The dolphin cruise looks amazing ... I will definitely look into that if we get another cruise via Gibraltar. We didn't get up the rock either because of the cable car closure but we did see a monkey in the cemetary. You are right about Gibraltar ... not much to write home about.

Enjoying your report Corinna. We are doing the cruise again next year, so that dolphin cruise looks a good thing to do as we did a tour with a recommended taxi driver and saw what there is to see then.

Another great day Corrina:thumbsup2 with some fab pictures:yay:

I bet you were thrilled with the Dolphin cruise:lovestruc:lovestruc and I love your "Minnie" dress:love:

What a fab day. Do you have a link or the name of the company that you used for the Dolphin cruise please? I may book that for next year.

Looking forward to reading more. :)

Sure thing. The company is called Dolphin World and I booked it through this link:

I would happily recommend both Dolphin World and the website through which I booked this.

Day 6

This was our second day at sea and another busy old day. I had set a wake up call for 7:00 AM and only woke up minutes before. We got changed and headed up to the gym for the stretching class. This time round we went to the Wide World of Sports area on deck 10. It was nice to be outside again, but it was quite noisy and as there are airconditioning units right in front of this, the yoga mats were blown about a bit. It was still a very enjoyable class.

When the class finished, the decks still looked positively deserted. So we decided to chance having breakfast at Topsiders. Normally we give this a wide birth on a sea day as this tends to be a zoo when everybody is on board. For those of you, who have never been on the Magic, this must be the worst designed space on the ship. The way the buffet lines are positioned, it creates a terrible bottle neck. Still, that morning the line was minimal and we found a table straightaway. We had some fruit and then various hot breakfast foods.

Once we finished breakfast, it was time to go down to deck 4 to meet up for Walk A Mile. This time another couple was joining us and it was another member of cruise staff doing it.

With the exercise taken care of for the day, we both went our separate ways. I headed back to Treasure Ketch to see if I could get another Med scrapbook. They had replenished their stocks over night and there were plenty of them there. I also got two packs with paper and stickers for the Med cruise for less than $1.50 each. So I ended up with two scrapbooks and two kits with paper and stickers for less than $10. I was very pleased.

I took my treasures back to the cabin and picked up my bag with the jewellery making stuff and my E Reader.

With not long to go before the cruise, I had a number of people who had either only just realized that I was offering the jewellery workshops or had sent a message to the wrong person initially. I also had two people, who were in the first wave of signing up, that suddenly had a time clash with the workshop that they originally been allocated. One of them was having a vow renewal and Disney changed the timings for this at the 11th hour. So I decided to run a smaller workshop for those people. As everybody in this group was over 18, I decided the best spot for this would be outside the Cove Cafe.

So I got there nice and early to stake out a spot and settled down to read. Unfortunately this plan did not work as soon I was joined by another couple. About half an hour before the class started, I was joined by one of the people participating in the workshop and her husband. I could at least go and get myself a coffee without risking to lose my spot completely.

Soon the others arrived and it became clear that doing the class outside would not work as the other couple was still there. So we decided to check if there was space inside the Cove Cafe. Fortunately there was a perfect table available. We had to pull up a couple of extra chairs, but that was fine. This was probably my favourite workshop of the 4 I did. The venue just made this feel a lot more relaxed and the smaller group (6 compared with 11) meant that everybody could chat while working. If I do this again, which is likely, then I will do this in smaller groups.

Time does fly when you are having fun. The workshop was supposed to last from 11:00 to 12:00, but suddenly it was 12:30. I had arranged to meet Graham outside the Buena Vista Theatre just before 13:00. So I quickly grabbed something to eat at Topsiders and then headed down to deck 5.

One of the activities that were special for this cruise was Desperate Shipmates, a multi-day crime mystery. The first installment of this took place at 13:00 at the Buena Vista Theatre. I did not really know what to expect, but decided to give it a go. Well, over the course of the cruise, I was blown away by how ellaborate this whole thing was.

Before we were let into the theatre, we had to sign in with our name and cabin number. This seemed a bit odd as I never had to sign in for any of the free activities before. However, by the end of the day it had become clear why this was necessary.

Once we had signed in, we were given some note paper and a pencil each. We went inside to find a seat. The backstory was that we were attending the launch of a navigational device, which would revolutionize the cruise industry. Outside the theater was a "reporter" who was interviewing some of "public" (really some of the characters). This footage was shown on the screen in the theatre. This is were I took a bit of a double-take and realized just to what length Disney goes in the name of entertainment. We had a very active cruise meet thread on the DISboards. There were always new people joining so it did not really surprise me that with about a week to go until the cruise, we had a new person joining. He introduced himself as Rudy Finkus and posted a few times. I nearly fell of the chair when I realized that Rudy Finkus ended up being a character in Desperate Shipmates. He was introduced as a fanatical Disney fan, many time cruiser and member of the DISboards. They even somehow had managed to get one of the lanyards that a group of people had bought and given as a gift to the people on our cruise meet thread. I was never quite sure if the inclusion of Rudy Finkus was an honour and a mark of respect or if DCL was poking fun at us. I suspect the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Still, full marks go to them for coming up with the idea to plant a character on our thread.

Apart from Rudy Finkus and the reporter Casey Close, the characters were Dr Shadowsky, inventor of the navigational device; Wanda, his estranged wife; Dimitri Bloom, fellow inventor and rival of Dr Shadowsky; Philbert and Maximillion Creepier, twins who have financed the project; Ennid Dinyse, cartographer who worked on the maps for the navigational device and Officer Curt, officer of the watch. The purpose of this first session was to introduce the characters and the plot. Apart from the launch of the navigational device, this was also supposed to be the first part of a lecture series to celebrate the launch. Dr Shadowsky was introducing the navigational device and running through the schedule for the lecture series, when the lights flickered and went off. When the lights came back on, the navigational device and Dr Shadowsky had disappeared. The whole session lasted about half an hour, but it was absolutely hillarious. Graham was not too sure about coming at first, but he enjoyed it as well. The session ended with a summary about each of the characters and we were encouraged to check out DNN for updates and further clues. Yes, Desperate Shipmates even had its own dedicated TV channel. The scene had been beautifully set.

Once we were dismissed, I headed down to the Promenade Lounge for my next jewellery workshops. Before the next workshop started, I had arranged for one of the girls in our group and her mother to meet me. Her mother had contacted me to see if they could join, but they only wanted to do one of the projects, the Tinkerbell mobile phone charm. When her mother contacted me, she mentioned that it was the girls birthday. So I also had a card signed by the characters and had made her a set of jewellery. I also modified the project a little and instead of the mobile phone charm, they made a bag charm and a keyring.

My next group had all the teenagers that signed up in it and I was a little concerned about this. There was no need for this. They really got into this and there were absolutely no problems. In fact, they were probably the most polite group of teenagers that I have ever encountered. Unfortunately I had to move them on as soon as the hour was over as the next group was already waiting.

The last group probably got the best deal. Everybody was there on time and for once I had no other commitments afterwards. So I could afford to just hang around until everybody was done. Even though the group was full with 11 people, this felt more relaxed and I think everybody had fun.

Throughout all the workshop, I had staff coming by to check out what we were doing and watching us for a while. I was always a little worried that we would be asked to move on. We had not organized this with DCL, but just took over a small area of the Cove Cafe or the Promenade Lounge. There was no problem and some of them came over and asked questions. They were just genuinely interested. Maybe they took note that this was an activity that was of interest to people. In the end I had nearly 10% of our group in my workshops.

We had rearranged tables and chairs so that we could all sit together and after the last workshop of the day was over, I was starting to put everything back how it was, which was the least I could do. I was suddenly surrounded by bartenders telling me to just leave it and that they would take card of this. It was most certainly not what I had expected, but I was very grateful.

I went back to the cabin and checked out the Desperate Shipmates channel. At that time, there was just a recording of this afternoons installment. Soon it was time for more character photos. Daisy and Donald, Chip and Dale, Mickey and Minnie, Goofy and Pluto were out in their Spanish costumes. So I was busy for a while.

After the photos, I met up at the adult pool with Graham and there was nobody around. We had our swim and I went into one of the hot tubs for a bit and then we headed for the Rainforest Room.

When we got back to the cabin, the message light on our phone was blinking. I listened to out message. It was a message from the Creepier twins letting us know the time and venue for the next installment of Desperate Shipmates. That was the reason why they needed our cabin numbers. We got changed for dinner and headed downstairs.

Dinner that night was at Animator's Palate and it was the rotational menu for this restaurant. Animator's Palate is our least favourite restaurant, but I love the menu there. Graham was presented with Ahi Tuna Tatare, Cheddar Cheese and Bacon Soup and Grilled Veal Chop with Roasted Red Bliss Potatoes , Sweet Onions and Morel Mushroom Sauce. I don't think that he would have chosen any of this himself. He was particularly unsure about the raw fish, but he enjoyed everything. I had Polenta Cake with Roma Tomato and Portobello Mushroom followed by Cheddar Cheese and Bacon Soup. For my main course, I had chosen Fire Roasted Tenderloin with Wasabi Mashed Potatoes, Bok Choy and Tamarind Barbecue Sauce. We treated ourselves to a bottle of Rosa Regale with dinner. I had heard so much about this Italian sparkling wine, that I finally wanted to try it. It was rather yummy. Graham had some Apple Crumble for dessert, but I passed on dessert. There was just nothing that I fancied. They used to have Peanut Butter and Chocolate Pie on this menu and I am still missing this.

After dinner, we headed back to the cabin and went to bed. We would have a busy day ahead of us and wanted to get a reasonably early night. We had to put our clocks back for an hour, which was the first of 6 times that we had to do this. I took a quick photo of our latest towel animal, which was a huge turtle made out of towels and a blanket and then headed for bed.
