The Marvels

I guess we will find out of course. Maybe more female leads is better?

Jeremy was learning to walk so we'll see.

Hemsworth sounded like taking a step back.

Antman is a toss up IMO but has a replacement ready.

Hulk replacement is for sure ready.

Not sure I consider Spiderman the new Iroman when we will have Ironheart.

Peter is not the replacement for "Iron Man" - he's the replacement for Tony Stark. Characters are more than their suit/gimmick.

Exactly! You can take any individual shot out of context. I don't really see the issue with recent female characters. Sure, they are tough, but they show range too - not that they strictly have to to be considered "written well." That term is often confused with "written how I like it."

For real. I've often said that if Ripley was created today, people would despise her for the same reason they don't like Rey or Captain Marvel. Why did she survive? Why did she go back for the dumb cat? Why doesn't she show any emotion other than anger? (Aliens changed this by introducing Newt, thankfully.) Also, Katniss was criticized for NOT being a likeable character - but that's the point of The Hunger Games.

And don't get me started on what people would say about Leia "Somebody has to save our skins" Organa.

Ironheart miniseries at this point has been canceled or removed from the release windows. Whether her character continues remains up in the air.

Could not disagree more. Ripley was nearly a perfectly written and performed character. She was the voice of reason in the room. Full range of emotions shown: tough, angry, compassionate, motherly love, etc. Helps that you have Weaver in the role who is spectacular in many ways. Bottom line is that’s how you do it, and Hollywood can’t seem to get this right anymore!

Jennifer Lawrence is wonderful in Hunger Games and I literally saw almost no backlash of her performances. She was perfect for the role and performed it very well. So nuanced and so troubled. The draft scene at the beginning when she volunteers to save her sister is chocked full of her full range of emotions and nearly perfectly done. I just didn’t see what you are saying.

Brie being stone faced and stiff as a board in Captain Marvel I get completely. Because that is exactly how she looked! It seems like they at least listened and addressed that somewhat in the second one.

How can you see the scene with Katnis in the tree treating her wounds and not be impressed with Jennifer Lawrence’s acting chops? Nearly a perfect scene!

Ripley is the benchmark for how to write / act a female hero imho. That character was dearly loved by a vast majority of the movies audience.

Great is great, and it would still be considered great if done in 2023.

Carol was stoic in the first movie because of the Kree brainwashing, etc. It was on purpose, and she starts to crack later in the movie. Her other appearances show her growth even more, expecially in the Marvels.

Not all female characters have to be all things to all people. It's okay if they don't show motherly instinct or anything. Heck, that's valid for actual women too. 😮

Honestly, she wasn't even all that stoic in the first one.

She was in some ways, especially at first. But she loosened up quite a bit as the movie went on. Some people only see what htey want to see though.

Kevin Feige Says Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man Will Not Return to the MCU
As for the other Avengers, the president of Marvel Studios did not address the rumors of their return.

Robert Downey Jr.‘s Iron Man will not be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe — at least according to Kevin Feige.

In an interview with Vanity Fair about the third act of Downey’s decades-long career, the president of Marvel Studios addressed the rumors that all the original Avengers would be returning in one form or another in a future MCU phase.

“We are going to keep that moment and not touch that moment again,” Feige told the publication about Tony Stark’s emotional final moments in Avengers: Endgame. “We all worked very hard for many years to get to that, and we would never want to magically undo it in any way.”

It seems difficult to imagine a Marvel universe that does not include Downey, but before he was cast in the crucial role of Iron Man, the studio was hesitant about casting him, despite Feige and director Jon Favreau vying for him.

“It purely came down to the Marvel board being nervous at putting all of their chips in their future films on somebody who famously had those legal troubles in the past,” Feige said of Downey’s arrests. “I wasn’t very good — and I’m still not great — at taking no for an answer. But I also don’t pound my chest to try to get my way. I try to figure out ways to make it as clear to other people why we should head in a direction. And that’s when the idea of a screen test came up.”

At that point, Downey had already been nominated for an Oscar for Chaplin and should have been able to get the role without auditioning, but Marvel execs needed to see for themselves that he was the right person for the part — and they did.

Following his Iron Man casting, the Oppenheimer actor went on to be a team player with his fellow superheroes and fought for them at various points. Ahead of the first Avengers, he even used his contract negotiations to get higher pay for his co-stars.

“We used to joke and say that Robert was the head of the acting department because everybody there looked up to him,” Feige added. “He took them all under his wing but not in a subservient sense. He just became their cheerleader.”

I don't think they should be so precious about it. Sure, it was a great moment. It still would be and they could make more great moments. That's the nature of the thing. Putting it on a pedestal accomplishes nothing.

Imagine that, a franchise wanting to preserve the greatness of its most important characters. If only Star Wars could have learned this lesson from Marvel.

Sooo RDJ 100% turned them down
Can’t really blame him. Put in over a decade of work over several movies for one character, made a ton of money. Hes 58. He can pick his spots now and at his age he might want to do more passion projects like Oppenheimer. I think he genuinely saw Endgame as the end for him and a good way to say goodbye to the franchise.

I get the sense that Chris Evans might feel the same way, at least in terms of leaving his character behind. He’s younger though so maybe he can be convinced if they want to bring him back.
