Spin Off - Do you have any red light cameras where you live?

And yet the courts in MN and the state legislature have said that photo only enforcement is illegal.
No it's not the owner's responsibility, it is the responsibility of the law enforcement agency to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a crime was committed by a specific person.
How can it get simpler? If the LEO witnesses the violation, or the person admits to the violation. If a photo of the violation is not good enough to prove beyond a reasonable doubt, then there is no evidence of a violation.
Well, never say that a politician has any ability to know what to do or what it right or wrong. Business as usual. In other words just because they did that doesn't mean it is what should have happened.

So a car owner could get points on their license when they weren’t even in the car?
Why not, if they let someone else use the vehicle that broke the law. I had a daughter that had a slight accident when she was young. Guess who had to pay the damages and had his insurance rates remain high even two years after she was married and living away. The owner always has the responsibility. How about ones home owners liability? The owner of the property is still responsible if someone get injured on their property while trespassing. Or if you let your underaged teen use the car and they get stopped with booze in the car. Guess who is going to pay the fine and have their rates increase. I just had to pay $500 in copay after a car ran into the side of it in a parking garage at a mall. I still had to pay that and I wasn't anywhere near the car. Life is like a casino. The odds are always with the house.

That is absurd to expect the owner of a car to assume traffic violations for borrowing their car to another legal driver.

For the record, the last time I went through one I just simply paid the $50. It's a non-moving violation so it's just $50. I couldn't care less about the $50. However, I will point out that it was in one of the more terrible parts of town in a town that is already one of the largest cesspools in the country. It does absolutely nothing to increase safety. There will be 30 shootings this weekend but at least they'll be on top of the guy who missed the light by 0.5 seconds.

“We’re calling this bill the Automated Enforcement Inoculation Act, so we defend our residents against the corrupt automated enforcement camera, red-light camera and speed camera industry that has been rife with corruption everywhere it’s used,” O’Scanlon said.

No, not here. Photo-radar or red-light camera tickets don't carry any demerits, just fines.
Sure. Don’t let ANYBODY else drive your car unless you’re willing to face the consequences.

All the boo-hooers saying photo evidence is no good. Gimme a f-ing break. You damn well know you were in the wrong.

i bet those people rail against others not taking responsibility for their actions, yet change their tunes quickly when they become “victims.”

Grow a pair and stop making excuses and looking for loopholes.
Of course you are correct - never scoot through a yellow or go over the speed limit and you'll never get one of these tickets. Since I do fully expect whomever was driving is totally guilty of the violation (myself included), I just go ahead and pay the fines. The ones that really infuriate me though are the ones I don't know about (they somehow mysteriously go missing from our mail). If left unpaid the fines and penalties are registered against the license plate and you can't renew your tags without paying them. My DH and DS? One of these days...right to the moon. :furious:

I have to ask, if the cameras record what actually happened where does the corruption come in? Seriously, it seem like corruption is far more a problem without video recordings.

The backbone of american jurisprudence is "innocent until proven guilty" The government must prove you are guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. If you have cameras like the ones that used to be in Minneapolis, they very rarely got an identification level photo of the driver. I have two vehicles in my name in my driveway, neither one of which I drive on a regular basis. Why am I getting a ticket because the government is too lazy to put an actual cop there to give out the tickets?
What a (pardon the expression) copout. The vehicle is in line to kill others not just the driver. Someone has to be responsible for whatever damage might be incurred by the car no matter who is driving it. But if it is yourself then boo hoo, if it is someone you lent your car too, that is on you as well. You put a possible killing machine in the hands of someone that you have no control over and, according to you, will have no consequence for the actions. Hell, we will all be borrowing cars and running red lights from now on. Gain some time with no risk. We are so deep into the "it wasn't my fault society" that pretty soon we can deny absolutely anything.

We have WAY too many stoplights here to even guess how many, but Slo's poll today made me wonder about red light cameras. I looked up red light cameras and we have 16 in town! I've never been busted by one, but I know people who have, usually for a rolling right hand turn. It's an expensive ticket and near impossible to fight with the photo and video evidence against you.
They got rid of them, for various reasons. Actually caused accidents, were easy to defeat with a challenge, cost, etc.
