Something Old, Something New, Nothing Borrowed, Something Blue

Sorry about the hydrofoil. We went on one of these to Ireland one time. No thanks. Flying every time now. Frightful.

Pompeii is so interesting isn't it. I recall beyond hot though you did well to do it at the start of the day. Sorrento is a nice resort. But very hilly. Glad you got your liquer!

The photos are lovely. Funny they mixed up the days lol. One thing I enjoyed on NCL the disembarkment photo always had a costume character in it if you wanted. Cheesy I know but it was fun. Like one day it might be somebody in a dolphin suit, another a fish. Depending on the port. It made the photos fun.

That was not fun. We have been on them before to France and Ireland and also in San Francisco and that they were all fine, but this one was not to my liking.

Pompeii is so interesting isn't it.

It really is. I was absolutely spellbound.

I recall beyond hot

We were very lucky there. We got there lunchtime, which should be the hottest part of the day, but it was very pleasant.

The photos are lovely.

Thanks.

I have a photo with the dolphin from our cruise on the Jade. During our transatlantic on the Magic, we were docked right next to the Norwegian Epic and they had the dolphin on the dock. So DCL brought Captain Mickey out. The two characters don't quite compare.

Day 15

After a very busy first part of the trip and three early mornings in a row, we were finally able to have a lie in. We did not get up much before 10:00 and got ready. Because it was so late and we were on a bit of a time table regarding lunch, we decided to head down to Café Promenade for a coffee and some cake. Graham had a banana muffin and a vanilla donut. I had a morning muffin and a chocolate donut. Once we had finished our breakfast, I filled up my souvenir cup with some Fanta orange and then I arranged with Graham where and when we would meet. I then headed off to a Pamper Party, which was taking place pretty much opposite in the Bolero’s Lounge.

The Pamper Party was organized by the spa staff. I have done this kind of thing before on the Disney ships and it is usually a lot of fun. Some of the elements were present here as well. Essentially we were taken through a whole skincare routine and got to try out the products ourselves. However, this was more of a sales pitch with them trying to sell us various treatments, some of which I do think are really going a bit far for a ship. You can actually get non-surgical face lift on the ship where they inject all kinds of fillers. The idea to have invasive treatment like this done on a ship gives me the shivers. They ended up doing some business with me though. They offered a special that included a full body massage with an upgrade to hot stones, a full body exfoliation, a facial, a scalp massage and a collagen eye treatment for $99. I thought that was very fair. The only caveat was that it had to be booked by the end of the day, but then it could be used any time during the cruise. For the time being I decided to think about this. Part of the pamper party was also a Sunglow make up application, but the line for that was pretty long and I had to meet up with Graham in the not too distant future. So I decided to cut my losses and went to find Graham.

He had staked out a nice spot at the solarium again and had set up his telescope. We briefly went back to the cabin to drop off the telescope and then we went to the Windjammer for some lunch. It was pretty busy when we got there, but they have some raised tables near the entrance and we managed to get a couple of seats at one of those. Graham had some ice tea, salad with seafood and beef curry with rice. I got some strawberry Sprite and salad and then made good use of the pasta station again. I had penne with olives, sausage, salami, mushrooms and tomato sauce. I added some beef and chicken strips again. Lunch hit the spot.

After lunch we quickly used the bathroom and then we headed up to the SeaPlex. We had a 13:30 reservation for the escape room. I was really excited about this, but Graham was not too keen. However, he was willing to humour me. When we got there, the door for the area where this was due to take place was closed. We went inside the SeaPlex as I thought that maybe we had to check in there. One of the crew members there got on the radio and advised that somebody would be along shortly. We headed back towards the room and the crew member who was supposed to run this arrived at the same time. He unlocked the door and asked us to come in. He advised that this may well not be happening as we would need to minimum of 6 people to play. So we sat and waited and had a nice chat with him. He was from Canada. A short while later, another couple arrived, but then nobody else turned up. So the crew member took down our cabin numbers and would advise that he would check when there would be a session that would go ahead and book us for this. He reassured us that once we were through the Suez Canal and the temperatures were rising there would be sessions that would go ahead. We said goodbye and headed back to our cabin to pick up our stuff. Graham got his telescope back and I picked up my iPad as I fancied reading for a bit.

Graham found himself a spot right by the picture windows and initially I joined him there, but this quickly got too warm for my liking. So I moved to the back of the solarium where I still had a decent view, but was not under the glass roof and therefore it was cooler. I enjoyed just relaxing and reading my book. After a while we had enough of doing very little and decided to go and check out what was going on at the SeaPlex. We took our stuff back to the cabin first and on the way got an ice cream. I had a chocolate swirl and Graham had vanilla. Once we finished our ice cream, we dropped off the stuff we no longer needed and I picked up my cup and then we went upstairs to the SeaPlex. They were just setting up for bumper cars. So we both got something to drink and sat down.

Again, this was a bonus session as the trapeze was still out of order so it was not particularly busy, but it was busier than it had been a couple of days before. Part of the issue was that this time they had a professional photographer there that went around all the cars every time people got on and that delayed things somewhat. It was nice to get some professional photos though. I met a gentleman and his 5 year old daughter from Germany and ended up chatting to them while we were in line. They were raising her multi-lingual and we kind of switched back and forth between English and German. Again we managed to ride a fair few times. There was only one irritation. There was a boy about 9 or 10, who loved his bumper cars as much as we did. However, his approach was somewhat different. I know that the name of the game is bumper cars and I knew that therefore I may get bumped into. Indeed, that happened quite frequently and it was no problem. However, this particular sunshine liked to engineer frontal collisions and this did hurt, I actually ended up with a cut on my neck where the seatbelt had dug in. So I spent the rest of the session keeping out of his way as much as I could. There would however be some fun in that respect later in the cruise.

At some stage I had to leave as this was finally the evening when there would be professional photos with DreamWorks characters on the Via and I did not want to miss this. So I said goodbye to Graham and headed downstairs. It did not specify which character would be out, but I did not really mind. I found King Julien from Madagascar with an escort and a photographer and again nobody else. I got my photo and then I got chatting with his escort. Laura is from Scotland and really nice. We got quite friendly over the course of the cruise. Eventually somebody else came to see King Julien and before I left, Laura told me that Alex the lion and Gloria the hippo would be out in a bit and let me know when each of their sessions would start. I thanked her and told her that I would be back.

I used the time that I had to check the photos out. I was pondering getting the photo package, but figured that it would only be worth my while if I had more than 150 photos. At that stage I was just short of 100, but it was still early in the cruise and I figured that I would not be far off 150 photos by the end of the day. So I purchased the package. I then figured I better make it worth my while and used the time until the next character set to get some solo photos. There was quite a good variety. The white backdrop was up as per usual and they also had photographers by the red sculpture on the Via and by the Wonderland Chair. On top of this they had a backdrop with Sagrada Familia and also with a railing and the moon. I had timed this perfectly and finished my round of the photo opportunities just at the end of Alex’s session so I managed to see him and then did not have to wait long until Gloria came out.

With this done, I went to the spa to book my treatment using the special from the Pamper Party for later in the cruise. I then went off to find Graham. I did find him in the outdoor pool again. I told him that I fancied some hot tub time and went to get changed. When I came back, he had done enough lengths and decided to join me. The hot tubs by the indoor family pool looked pretty full so we decided to head to the solarium. For some reason those hot tubs had been drained. Still we were quite happy to hang out in the solarium pool instead. When we had enough, we got some towels and sat on a couple of loungers by the windows enjoying the view while we dried off a little. Once we were no longer dripping, we headed back to the cabin to get showered and changed.

When we were done, we headed downstairs and got some photos together. Then it was time for dinner. This night we were back at Chic. We had a different menu that night, although I learned at this stage that every restaurant has some signature dishes that are always on the menu. I had heard great things about the cold green pea soup at Chic. I love chilled fruit soups, but had up to that point given chilled vegetable soups I wide berth. I was surprised that Graham decided to go for the same. It turned out that he had misread this and expected a hot soup. I have to say this was not for me. It was not bad, but it was just not something I would choose to eat again. My starter was a different matter. From the menu I did not really know what to expect. It just stated Crostini. This was consisted of grilled bread drizzled with olive oil and balsamic vinegar that was topped with thinly sliced vegetables and grated parmesan cheese. I was absolutely blown away by the flavours. For his main course, Graham had cottage pie, which he said was OK. I had the onion crusted chicken with smoked bacon, caramelized onion, potatoes and honey-Dijon mustard jus, which was very nice. I had the Crème brûlée. The custard was lovely, but something had gone wrong with the topic.

After dinner, we headed back to our cabin. Graham noticed that not far from our cabin on the opposite side, there was a door open. Now Graham would not be Graham if he did not have a look. There were some stairs and a number of lifts in that area. What a shame that we could not use them to get around the ship. When we got to the cabin, we got ready for bed and after I set the alarm for the following morning, we called it a night.

A lovely and relaxing day. The spa price sounds fantastic, glad you locked in that price.

Too bad about the lack of people in the Seaplex. Hope you got to experience that.

The boy at bumper cars sounds quite unpleasant. I understand trying to avoid him.

Great character photos but King Julien is my favorite! Mom and I love him in those movies, he makes us laugh so much!!!

It was and a lot of fun, too.

I was pretty pleased with this.

Too bad about the lack of people in the Seaplex. Hope you got to experience that.

We got to do this later in the trip.

He was a pain, but we got our own back later in the trip.

Great character photos but King Julien is my favorite! Mom and I love him in those movies, he makes us laugh so much!!!

I have seen the first Madagascar film, but I could not remember King Julien at all. He was fun to meet though.

I have read a lot of reports of this happening recently. This especially seems to be an issue for cruises out of Galveston.
We were out of Galveston in Feb of 2015 and I don't remember it being an issue, but I remember the alcohol policy both embarkation and debarkation. Texas is so silly about its policies.

We had our invitation in the cabin when we got there and it made sense to have it early in the cruise, it was just a little early in the day for me especially after the late muster drill.
on CC I always remind people to check with guest services, I would half my cruises I have not received an invitation.

So do I. We have done some fantastic ones over the years.
I would venture to say that we have not done a cruise sponsored excursion in years... And most likely would not do any more in the future as long as it was not a security issue.

Where I ended up sitting, I could not really sneak out, but I did learn some useful information.
I see... no back row options available when you got there.

That is a shame. So far we have been very happy with the food both in terms of choice and quality if you discount two components of the offerings.
That is good news, I think I just keep comparing the food to what it used to be on Celebrity when we started cruising together back in 2004. It was soooo good and I wanted to try everything, and now when I look at the menu, I feel it is the same thing over and over and it just does not seem like anyone cares in the kitchen what it taste like.

That has fortunately not been my experience. I grew up having a low sodium diet due to some health issues my dad has and subsequently have a very low tolerance for salt.
I have the same issue, a very low tolerance to salt, and I always swell up when I eat salt, and everything always taste over salted to me on the ship. Except of course the desserts. :)

I have yet to find a cruise line that does desserts that are worth eating with one or two notable exceptions. The Grand Marnier souffle on DCL is one of them and I love the Chocolate Sensation that they had on the menu on the Splendour of the Seas every night. I think they have the same menu fleet-wide with the exception of the Quantum class ships so I should have this again in November.
I will try and remember this, the last two cruises I have been on, I just skipped dessert, and decided to not even to try them.

I have never seen the ones in Zurich. Have you seen the ones in Mainz. When I still lived in Germany, they were pretty local to me and they are stunning.
I have not seen those, but they are on my bucket list now. I have only been to a few places in Germany, down the Rhine for Christmas Markets (Cologne, Koblenz, Heidelberg, black forest, and Breisach), Warnemunde and Berlin

Love the update and now I can view all the wonderful images.

Breakfast looks good. Muffin and donut my kind of deal! The spa package for $99 sounds great value. I look forward to reading when you take that treatment.

Sorry about the lack of people to so the seaplex. I always pick the tour or excursion that gets cancelled!

That lad on the bumper cars. Not cool. I see you had a change in colour of cars. I like the pink.

Great characater and backdrop photos. Yeah King Julien. My fav as well. Good idea to get the photopackage 150 photos easy to do.

Wait strawberry sprite! Omg I would love this.

Lovely photos of you and Graham before dinner. Ohhhh those stairs and elevator. Tempting!

So I just got through your day at Pompeii. It looked a lot different than I imagined. Perhaps seeing it in person would make a big difference. I don't know how you two go so long without food and with all that walking! I would be passing out starving!

Sounds like your evening on the ship was also very nice. I like the pictures that you and Graham took! I will be back soon to catch up the next day!

but I remember the alcohol policy both embarkation and debarkation. Texas is so silly about its policies.

I have read about this a lot recently, but I cannot remember this at all from when we sailed out of Galveston in 2012.

on CC I always remind people to check with guest services, I would half my cruises I have not received an invitation.

I did this on our cruise on the Splendour. On the Ovation the invitation was in the cabin when we got there. If the invitation is not there when we get to our cabin on Navigator, I will definitely check.

I would venture to say that we have not done a cruise sponsored excursion in years... And most likely would not do any more in the future as long as it was not a security issue.

We usually do a mix of just going with the flow, private excursions and ship excursion. I am hoping to book a ship excursion for Boston as this is our first point of entry to the USA and I have read nightmare stories about immigration for non-US citizens with 3 hour plus waiting times. If we book an excursion through Royal Caribbean, we will have priority for clearing the formalities.

I see... no back row options available when you got there.

Actually, my problem was that I was in the back row between the lecturer. The venue is all the way aft and the stage area is towards the back of the venue.

That is good news, I think I just keep comparing the food to what it used to be on Celebrity when we started cruising together back in 2004.

We only have DCL and NCL to compare the food to and in relation to both, it compares favourable.

I feel it is the same thing over and over and it just does not seem like anyone cares in the kitchen what it taste like.

I can see this. Some of the menu items on DCL have been available since we first started cruising. I read recently that the menus on Royal Caribbean had a make over.

I have not seen those, but they are on my bucket list now. I

Mainz is a charming city jam-packed with history and the Chagall windows are really stunning. This video gives a good impression:

The commentary is in German, but the pictures speak for themselves.

Love the update and now I can view all the wonderful images.

I am glad that you can see all the photos now.

The spa package for $99 sounds great value.

I thought it was a really good deal.

Sorry about the lack of people to so the seaplex.

It all worked out in the end.

I always pick the tour or excursion that gets cancelled!

We seem to be doing this, too.

That lad on the bumper cars. Not cool. I see you had a change in colour of cars. I like the pink.

They had bumper cars in yellow, orange, blue, green, red and pink. I managed to try out every colour.

Great characater and backdrop photos.

I really loved having the characters around.

Wait strawberry sprite! Omg I would love this.

It is rather nice. They have Coca Cola Freestyle machines on the Ovation with over 100 different flavours. My favourites are raspberry Coke, peach Fanta and cherry Sprite. We won't have this on our next cruise, but the ship we are sailing on in April had the Coca Cola Freestyle machines.

Lovely photos of you and Graham before dinner.

Thanks

So I just got through your day at Pompeii. It looked a lot different than I imagined.

I think part of the issue is that this is actually the lesser known and photographed site. Most people think of Herculaneum when they hear Pompeii, which is very different.

Perhaps seeing it in person would make a big difference.

It was amazing to see this in person.

I don't know how you two go so long without food and with all that walking! I would be passing out starving!

It has its advantages. I think in my case, I get so excited about what I am seeing that I kind of forget that I am hungry.

I like the pictures that you and Graham took!

Thanks.

Corinna

Do they not have the freestyle Coca-Cola machines on every ship? Only the Quantum class maybe?

That sounds like a very relaxing day. The spa treatment was a really good deal!

How strange that they had drained the hot tubs. What an annoying little kid ramming everyone. It's one thing to bump cats but another to make a full frontal assault. I like the pictures of you two in the bumper cars.

Good for you on purchasing the photo package. You always get more value out of it than I do, but I still try hard as I can to get as many pictures as possible.

I would never order any pea soup as I despise peas, olives as well for that matter, however the crostini looked very good. As did the chicken. As far as dessert, you got creme, no brulee. I am wary about ordering this dish as to me without the brulee it is not to my liking.

How strange that they had such a nice elevator / staircase combination not available for common use.

Do you have a map of the route for your cruise like Disney has on their website? I'm not sure if I'm clear on the route you are sailing.

Do they not have the freestyle Coca-Cola machines on every ship? Only the Quantum class maybe?

Unfortunately not all ships have them at the moment. With the exception of the Empress class, each class of ship has one or more ships that have the Coca Cola Freestyle machines:

Quantum Class
Anthem, Ovation, Quantum

Oasis Class
Allure, Harmony, Oasis

Freedom Class
Freedom

Radiance Class
Jewel

Voyager Class
Explorer

Vision Class
Enchantment, Grandeur

Sovereign Class
Majesty

The spa treatment was a really good deal!

I thought so, too. We got $20 off a similar package and got a couple of free upgrades (hot stones, collagen eye treatment.

How strange that they had drained the hot tubs.

The pools and hot tubs were open 24 hours a day and periodically they would close one for cleaning and maintenance.

He was a pain, but we got our own back.

This is something I really enjoy.

I love conventional pea soup and also olives. I also normally love cold soups, but this one did not work for me.

As far as dessert, you got creme, no brulee. I am wary about ordering this dish as to me without the brulee it is not to my liking.

I have been burned with that on DCL as well on one of our cruises. This time round it was especially disappointing as I had a perfect version in Narbonne.

How strange that they had such a nice elevator / staircase combination not available for common use.

I can understand why they would have this in the backstage area, but what I did not understand is why we did not use those stairs during the muster drill. I know on DCL we have used crew staircases during the muster drill on occasion.

Do you have a map of the route for your cruise like Disney has on their website? I'm not sure if I'm clear on the route you are sailing.

It is not a particularly good one, but I found this on the website of a UK travel agent:

I think part of the issue is that this is actually the lesser known and photographed site. Most people think of Herculaneum when they hear Pompeii, which is very different.

That makes sense. I googled Herculaneum and looked at the images and you're right that's more of what I thought about Pompeii. There was an exhibit here a few years ago and they recreated what parts of it may have looked like prior to the eruption. They had artifacts, and talked about the way of life before you got to the shocking parts of the aftermath.

It is not a particularly good one, but I found this on the website of a UK travel agent:

That gives me a much better idea of the itinerary. I was surprised that you had the day at sea. I was scratching my head wondering where the ship was possibly sailing that you didn't have a port that day.

I think I would have very much enjoyed this.

There is a fair distance between Naples and Athens.

Day 16

This was probably the day during the whole of the holiday that I was the least excited about. This was our day at Athens and for some reason this just did not captivate my imagination before we left for our trip. I have to admit even when I got up that morning, I was less than excited. If Graham had suggested that we stayed on the ship, he would have had no objection from me. When we woke up, we were already in port. We got up and ready. Graham fancied a proper breakfast this morning so we headed to American Icon Grill. We were directed straight to a table for two and service was pretty slick. We both had some coffee and orange juice. Graham had a raisin swirl, but I did not fancy any pastries this morning. Graham had the New York Bodega Breakfast, which consisted of bacon, egg and cheese on a Kaiser roll. I went for something a bit more exotic and had the Southwest Huevos Rancheros. This consisted of fried eggs, tomatoes, avocados, our cream and salsa in a tortilla shell. The tortilla shell could have been a bit crispier, but the fresh flavours more than made up for this and I really enjoyed my breakfast.

After breakfast we briefly headed back to the cabin so that I could pick up my bag and both of us picked up our cameras. Then we headed towards the gangway. We stopped for a photo again and then tried to get our bearings. I had read before the cruise that there is a port shuttle from terminal 2, where we were docked, to terminal 1. There was a bus there when we got there, but that turned out to be a crew shuttle. There was no signage for the port shuttle so we decided to wait for a bit to see if a shuttle would turn up. I used the time to take some photos.

Being at Piraeus was a very emotional experience for me. At this stage I need to go a little bit into family history. I was the first grandchild for my paternal grandparents. When my parents were sharing possible names before I was born, my grandfather vetoed the name my parents had chosen, Bianca. Instead he suggested Corinna. Now, in the UK hardly anybody can pronounce my name and it is pretty rare in Germany, too. Around the time I was born 0.012% of German girls were given that name. The name is actually of Greek origin although in Greek it is spelled with a K. It means maiden and there was also a famous Greek poet called Corinna. So how did I end up with a Greek name? Well, as a young man, my grandpa was in the German merchant navy and was stationed right here in Piraeus for a number of years. This later became the inspiration for my name. It was very moving to stand in a spot where quite conceivably my grandpa had stood as a young man. As far as my name is concerned, I have gone through stages of indifference, downright hating it to finally reaching an uneasy acceptance. However, I always had a very strong bond with my grandpa until he sadly passed away during my penultimate year in high school. Still, he was probably the single most influential person in my life, much more so than my parents ever were. Even though he has not been around for over 20 years, all that day, I felt very close to him.

But enough of the history lesson. We had stood in the same spot about 10 minutes and there was no sign of a port shuttle. So we decided to head towards the exit. We found a bunch of taxis and to our surprise the bus that we had planning to take to the Acropolis. From the information we had, this only left from terminal 1. The bus was sitting there when we got there, but it was so full that I doubt a flea would have fit in. The bus eventually left and the next bus did not look any better and more and more people appeared at the bus stop. So we gave up on this idea. Graham suggested that we walk over to terminal 1 as the train station was meant to be quite close to this. It was a beautiful mild day so I agreed. One bonus with this course of action was that I manage to get a photo with the whole of the ship in as Piraeus is not as built up as Naples and not as windy as Barcelona or Civitavecchia. I got a couple of clear shots.

We ended up not walking very far. We came across a hop on hop off bus parked on the side of the road and they advertised a day ticket for €16 per person. We figured that was fair. We headed over there and were pointed to an area were various hop on hop off buses were parked. We had actually walked past this on the way up. We backtracked a little and found a bus from that company. In the end we were only charged €15 per person. The bus also came with free Wi-Fi and an added bonus was that this was an express bus to the Acropolis. There we could then change to the Athens city loop. This suited us great, as our top priority was the Acropolis anyway.

We had a short wait from when we got on the bus until we set off. Initially the Wi-Fi worked fine and I was able to catch up on my emails. Once we left the port area, I stopped playing on my phone and enjoyed the views. Piraeus is actually quite a pretty town and if we end up there again, it may well be worth a look. Once we were on the motorway, I tried using the Wi-Fi again, but I could not get a connection. So I just sat back and relaxed. Soon we were in Athens. We made a quick stop at the Acropolis Museum in case somebody wanted to get off there and then we went to the bus area near the Acropolis.

We got off and followed the signs for the Acropolis. The line for tickets was pretty impressive so Graham left me in line and went off to get us something to drink. He came back with a lemon and a strawberry slushie. Our plan had been that we have half of each, but he had a strong preference for the strawberry one and I actually rather liked the lemon slushie and therefore I let him have the strawberry slushie after just having one sip. The line actually ended up moving far more quickly than we had thought and soon it was our turn. We got our tickets and then headed towards the entrance to the Acropolis. We had to finish our drinks first, but then we went through the ticket barriers. I soon realised that this was not a match made in heaven. I don’t understand why the ancient Greeks thought that marble is a good paving material. Sure, it looks pretty, but it is extremely slippery. There were also a large number of marble stairs we had to navigate. Going up them was not an issue, but I was not looking forward to coming down them again as they were not only slippery, but also uneven and for the most part there was nothing to hold on, too. I tried to put this out of my mind and we headed up there. Soon we saw an amphitheatre in the background and we stopped to take a look and some photos. Then we carried on towards the Acropolis itself.

When we got to the top, Graham spotted an outlook that he wanted to have a closer look at. I had one look at how to get there and I declined. There were marble rocks and the ground was very uneven. With my dodgy balance, this would not have been a good idea. So I stayed in the main area and took some photos. I also lucked out again as a tour group arrived just after I got there and they stopped right where I was standing. So I got the added benefit of some commentary.

Graham came back from the other side of the Parthenon. He told me that that route is a lot more flat and generally easier so we headed to the outlook together. On the way we had a quick bathroom stop. One thing that struck me is that there were a lot of dogs around the Acropolis and there were bowls with food and water at regular intervals. We enjoyed the views from the outlook and then had a quick look at the other ruins up there. Unfortunately you can only admire them from the outside. I have to say, I was less than impressed. From a distance, the Acropolis looks stunning, but close up it was nothing to write home about in my opinion. I am glad that I have been, but I don’t think I would go again.

We made our way back down and that is where I really freaked out. Between uneven and slippery marble steps, a lot of people heading in both directions and the lack of bannisters, I was convinced that I would take a tumble. At one stage, I just completely froze. Eventually I made it safely back down. We headed back to the bus area. There was no bus there so we headed to the little park that is right next to it and found a seat in the shade. We could see the buses come and go from there. This was quite a peaceful spot apart from various women trying to sell me lace tablecloths. At least they took no for an answer.

Eventually two buses arrived shortly after each other, but they both at the signs for the Piraeus loop on them. Shortly afterwards, one of them changed to a city loop and we got on. It was nice to see more of the city. We saw some beautiful buildings and the commentary was interesting. We had to change buses at Syntagma Square as our bus went offline, but it did not take long until the next bus arrived. We only stayed on until the next stop, which was the stop for the Plaka.

The Plaka is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Athens. When I researched Athens, I saw a bunch of photos and it looked really nice. One of the things I wanted to do in Athens was to have some gyros. This is again a legacy from my grandpa. There were some very nice Greek restaurants where I grew up and my grandpa introduced me to Greek food. Gyros has always been my favourite, but I had not had any since I left Germany 20 years ago. Although Graham had been to Greece before we met, he had never tried Gyros so I figured it was time he got initiated. I figured the Plaka would be as good a place to get some Gyros as any.

The bus stop is just on the fringes of the Plaka, but shortly after we turned away from the main road and into the pedestrianized area, we found a little restaurant with outdoor seating. They advertised Gyros and the place looked rather nice. So we decided to have a late lunch there. We both went with the Gyros, which was served with some flatbread, chips and tzatziki. I am not very keen on tzatziki, but Graham happily had mine, too. He had a beer with his lunch and I ordered a glass of white wine, but they brought me a small carafe, which contained two large glasses worth of wine. The food and the wine were delicious and considering that we were in one of the main tourist areas, it was a real bargain.

Once we had finished our lunch and paid, we decided to go for a wander. We only ever stayed on the outskirts of the area. I was hoping to get a piece of filigree jewellery, but we only came past one jewellery shop and they had nothing I liked. This turned out to be a blessing later in the trip. We decided at that stage that it was probably around the same distance to walk to the bus area near the Acropolis then to backtrack to the bus stop where he had got off. Taking into account that we probably would have to wait for a bus and the time it would take to get through the windy streets back to the Acropolis, this made even more sense. It was a beautiful walk with the Acropolis park on one side and some really pretty buildings on the other side. The walk was also a lot shorter than we had anticipated and it did not take us long at all.

When we got there, Graham went to find a bathroom. I waited for him and was continuously accosted by women wanting to sell me their tablecloths. I don’t think they had a particular productive day, as this time round they were a lot more aggressive. Still, they had not bargained with my stubbornness. If I say “no”, I mean “no”. Eventually Graham came back and fortunately our bus arrived not long afterwards. I thought that this was a good opportunity to finish catching up with my emails and update my status on Facebook. Unfortunately the same happened that had happened on every bus. The Wi-Fi worked for the 5 minutes or so and then stopped working. So I just sat back and relaxed. We had a clear run back to the port.

When we got back to the port, I tried if I could get their Wi-Fi to work. I had read that there is free Wi-Fi in the port, but that it is slow and temperamental. The fact that there was a large number of people in the waiting area trying to get online did not help either. So I gave up. In the end I did not go online again until we got to the airport in Dubai. We were running low on deodorant so I picked up some more at the duty free shop in the port. Then we headed back on the ship. We were welcomed back with water and cold towels, which was very welcome. The security staff was doing good business again with taking alcohol off passengers for safekeeping. Graham took a photo of the table although this was nowhere near impressive as it was in Naples.

Interesing update thank you.

Breakfast sounded nice. Good to get some protein at the start of the day.

I like the port photo. Cute dooney handbag!

Oh my re the buses but worked out ok because what a great photo of the whole ship. That is rare without crates and people in.

The bus is good value and great to have wifi.

Athens has never appealed to me so I was interested in your thoughts, the Greek Islands are nice but not so keen on mainland Greece. I was quite ill .... The hygene not quite UK standards..

Interesting about your name and grandpa. I think it is a fine name. I have a few Greek friends.

One of the reasons I don't enjoy European vacations is the darn mable floors on the hotels! I am like bambi in the hotel room with my frame. I can't stay up!

Nice photos of the Acropolis but I won't be lining up to go... That would def be a day on the ship. I am so glad you did not trip over. My heart was in my mouth reading it!
