However, $1700 for a body which (other than MP) is about the same as the performance of a 20D is just ridiculous.
If you look at DPReview, Phil Askey has actually gotten to play around with a D200 for his preview of the camera. He doesn't think the appropriate comparison in the Canon family is the 20D, it's the 5D:
The Nikon D200 was announced on 1st November 2005, some three and a half years since Nikon revealed their first prosumer digital SLR, the D100. It's fair to say however that the D200 is a completely different beast altogether, it shares far more with its 'bigger brother' the the D2X than its earlier namesake. The D200 has the robust build quality of the D2X, a 10.2 million pixel CCD sensor and a compact design more like the D100. Just as the D100 the D200 has a CCD sensor, unlike the D2X which utilized a CMOS sensor. It's clear that this camera is aimed at the same kind of market as the recently announced Canon EOS 5D. From a features, control and performance point of view the D200 is closer to the D2X than any other model.

Given the fact that Phil's had his hands on one (and is a Canon shooter himself), I think we can give his comments some credence. Yeah, I know, the 5D is a full frame camera. As a Nikon shooter, I don't care as a 10.5mm fisheye will give me all the angle I need. I've never fully come to understand the FF fixation that some people have. The D2X showed that it is possible to match or even surpass the resolution of larger sensors.
Especially when you can get the "budget version" of 20D... which is the XT for almost half the price.
But with the XT's lower price you'd lose:
2 MP resolution (granted, not a major deal)
2 fps
All metal, weather sealed, body
Larger buffer
Faster flash sync
faster AF (probably, but indications look good for this to be so)
A whole lot of customization flexibility.
If Phil's comments hold, than the D200 isn't a revamped D100, it's a new beast that seems to have inherited a lot of stuff from the D2X.
I'm not saying the D200 is for everyone, but if you're a serious shooter, it's looking like a winner!
