Don't bring ammunition to Turks & Caicos

You would have to ask people who have done it, just like you could ask the same question about a 1000 other things people have done. It doesn't make them comparable.
The commonality being "prohibited"

I was looking at the wording on Americans and Deltas sites and an NRA article on traveling with firearms.
Except American, Delta, and the NRA aren't responsible for catching things. That would fall on the TSA. So it's best to go to their site for info. Just my opinion of course.

When I worked for a European airline we booked a gun and ammunition in separate entries to your reservation. You could add both or only one. But yeah, you had to inform the airline.

Same with bringing ashes/human remains: inform your airline.

I'm giving the guy the benefit of the doubt... he didn't mean to bring the ammunition with him. Since he didn't know he had it, there was nothing to inform the airline about.

I think it's a valid question to ask why TSA in the US didn't see it when he left, or they did and didn't want to do anything about it.

Cases like this are one of the reasons I'm scared to travel some places. (I don't own firearms, so not this problem specifically, but I'm afraid of not knowing some obscure law.)

I don't think any one person even could read and understand every law on the books for an entire country.

I definitely think the guy should have read the State Department's warning, though, and checked all the pockets of his bag before using it.

Still, I think 12 years is way too harsh if no nefarious intent can be shown.

It varies. I've traveled several times on SWA with cremated remains (unfortunately, and I'm about to do it again next month). They don't require you to inform them, but you can't check them, only carry on.

My question is, if flying with only ammunition does it have to be declared to the airline?

If the answer is yes then TSA missed the ammunition.

If no then TSA did not miss the ammunition.

Neither the TSA pages nor the airline pages make it clear. They always seem to assume if traveling with ammunition, you are also traveling with a firearm.

Edited to add:

https://www.tsa.gov/travel/transporting-firearms-and-ammunition

Declare the firearm and/or ammunition to the airline when checking your bag at the ticket counter.

It appears there was a failure of the TSA to find the ammunition in the checked bag as it should have been declared to the airline.

Edited again to add:
Let me make it clear I am not blaming the TSA for the guy getting in trouble. A traveler should know everything that is in their bags. I am blaming the TSA for failing to do their job which includes preventing people from traveling with prohibited items.

Airlines focus is on safety and what TSA and other countries FAA type authorities allows. , but our limited in requiring themselves to inform every passenger on what local laws are. Ex airlines dont warn about pornographic material. certain countries it’s illegal and you can be arrested.

When we flew with MIL's cremains, they were allowed, but got a special check (because they didn't want to open the urn). The guy was very respectful during his thorough check. We've actually flown with cremains in checked luggage without a problem, but not on SWA. We have a small container of MIL's ashes that we take with us on trips--she was a big traveler.

This also happened to us years ago in Turks and Caicos. Husband brought his normal backpack on the trip that he had taken to the range the week before. We did not intentionally bring ammo with us. Was an oversight, just like the 2 men now in jail in Turks and Caicos. I found the ammo while packing the backpack to take to the pool. Ammo was disposed of. Crisis averted.

I don’t understand having a shared range bag.

I have a dedicated range bag. It never goes anywhere other than the range.

It is a minimal cost to eliminate many potential problems.

What is it about Turks and Caicos that after hunting or going to a gun range people want to go there afterwards? Maybe THIS is why they had to raise the penalty a few months ago to 12 years? 🤷‍♀️

Appreciate you. i have a son-in-law who is not careful enough with his gun storage IMO. Now that they have a 2 year old I worry and have warned my daughter that if grandson gets a hold of a gun she will also be liable for any results.

If you had ever been to Beaches, Turks and Caicos, you would understand the appeal. It is the best all inclusive we have ever been too and we have been to a lot over the years.

And I suspect this happens everywhere. You only hear about Turks and Caicos because of their huge prison sentences.

Agreed. What dude doesn't want more bags to haul his gear around. Tell me I'm wrong :-)
