Celebrity sightings

I met the Barenaked Ladies when they were supposed to do a concert but their equipment was snowed in at another location.

I also met a bunch of Jets back in the 90s. Selanne, Domi, Zhamnov, King, Olcyzk, Khabibulin...all the greats.

I met Jay Leno when I was on the college committee that booked him to do a show. This was when he was still doing standup and hosting The Tonight Show when Johnny Carson was off. He was kind, friendly, and jovial beyond all measure. Swell guy. He is also a VERY LARGE MAN in person - a towering, thick fellow. They say the camera adds ten pounds? Well in Leno's case it subtracts 50. He's yuge.

Alex Trebek, on the other hand, is a teeny-tiny, wee little man. Met him, also in college, when I tried out for the Jeopardy! College Tournament. He's friendly but kind of cerebral - sort of like that quirky English professor you had in college.

Downtown Julie Brown was friendly, but super quiet and soft-spoken. Saw her at a gift shop in Daytona Beach, Florida, surrounded by her crew, during Spring Break 1989(?). I only got to say a few words to her before her security guy started pointing towards the door, indicating that it was time for me to go.

Ran into Gerald McRaney and Delta Burke at Pat O'Brien's in New Orleans at Mardi Gras 1995(?). Gerald had been the Grand Marshall at one of the parades, and by sheer chance we were seated at the same table later that night. I was hammered and knocked my drink over, spilled it on both of them! :O

My favorite story is sharing a tour of the New England Pirate Museum in Salem, MA with Shaquille O'Neal in 2010. He was standing right next to me and I didn't even notice until DH pulled me aside and pointed him out.

Howard Cosell was sitting at a table across the aisle from my family and I at a restaurant in Pennsylvania in the mid-80s.

I walked past Bob Dylan on a sidewalk while on a trip to Switzerland.

Matt Damon sat down across from me at the gate in the airport.

Sort of met Meat Loaf when I worked at Penney's in the mid 90s. He was doing a meet-and-greet at our mall and they always brought them in through our employee entrance. He signed my cassette, but he never even looked at me.

From the '99 UConn Huskies, I met (and hugged) Ricky Moore and Rip Hamilton.

And the following I didn't actually "meet," but rather "got noticed" - at a Duran Duran concert in '05, John Taylor pointed and waved to me (I was rather close to the stage and waving my DURAN 2 license plate). Then in '08, Simon LeBon blew me a kiss. Earlier this summer, I got tickets to see Neil Gaiman speak in person and I posted to him on his FB page. To my surprise, he "liked" and responded to my post!

I drank beer and played video games with the members of Collective Soul at a dinner party in the early 90s. They were just getting known locally in Atlanta. I had no idea who they were.

I talked with Martina Navratilova and petted her dog at a food stand in Barcelona. Again, I had no clue until my friends told me afterwards.

I've talked with Evander Holyfield on two separate occasions, both when he still had two whole ears.

It all depends on your definition of "famous". I have had quite a few conversations with a bunch of professional wrestlers, and one former adult film star, who I also talked to at a couple of wrestling shows.

NHL Hall of Famer Bernie Federko was on my tour when I was a tour guide at Meramec Caverns. He was still playing at the time & was my favorite player, so that was a pretty big thrill.

Few other sports types. Kevin Costner filmed a scene from American Flyers about a mile from my house, and right in front of my best friend's house (you could actually read the name & address off their mailbox when we saw the movie in the theatre LOL). But, I didn't get to meet him :(

Mathew Broderick. Meg Ryan. (shooting a film in NYC) forgot the name
Drew Barrymore. (shooting a film Lower East Side Manhattan)
Geraldo Rivera. (movie theater)
Blondie. (car dealership)
Ray Knight and Nancy Lopez (LPGA tournament) Parked their car with no license at 15. LOL
Joe DiMaggio (he was a real A___HOLE)

couple others but forgot ...

Robin Williams - back when he was filming The Fisher King. He asked me if I knew what time it was before he went for a run in Central Park.
Madonna - again while running. She was running with a friend of mine and he actually introduced us.
Judd Hirsch - Lived in my building
Brad Pitt - He knocked over my umbrella in a restaurant. He picked it up and apologized.
Katie Couric - She would frequent a cafe where I worked.

Comes with the job.
Mickey Mouse was in studio last week (his security is tighter than the President's)
Lou Ferrigno was in in June.
Olivia Newton John was in in February.
Former NBA player Jason Collins was in in January

In past years:
Cruella de Vil
Allison Arngrim
Dean Butler
Dr. Joyce Brothers.
Raymond Burr

The 5th Dimension
Moses Malone
Bob Hope
Ruta Lee

A handful of D list or below celebrities.

Miss America 1992(?) at the Philadelphia Auto Show. Can't remember her name. She was from Hawaii. Jennie Garth from Beverly Hills 90210 was there the same night, but the line to meet her was too long and was filled with teenyboppers.

HGTV Kitchen Cousins about five years ago at a home and garden show.

Food Network chef Anne Burrell at a food event.

Several former Philadelphia Flyers at fan events.

A Survivor contestant, Stephanie something or other, about 2006, at the county fair.

But the ultimate celebrities (top or bottom of the barrel depending on your view) were John Waters and Edith Massey, "Edie the Egg Lady", who appeared in several of his outrageous cult films. I still have the autographed photo she personally signed for me. "Dear Ray, Love you, Edith Massey."

My latest was Ben Stein, he was a scheduled speaker at my husband's convention. After he spoke, everyone took a break and then it was lunch. We met him out in the hall way, after he went to his room to get something. He was confused and he recognized me and asked me to escort him back to the room for lunch. He told me to never get old it sucks. His speech was pretty boring, but he was really nice to talk with at lunch. I will say one thing, he adores his wife.

I went to high school with Chris Henchy . He's a producer and is married to Brooke Shields. My sister was a nominal friend of his. We chatted a couple of times. Super funny and nice guy back then.
