Traveling children don’t require an id. That said, if these 15 or 16 year old children look over 18 they will be asked for id. If they happen to have a passport or driver’s license I would tell them to bring them. Otherwise a school id works to convince the TSA folks they are under 18.
The id is also useful to get exit row seats. To sit in an exit row you must be 16. My 23 year old still gets carded to sit in an exit row.
