Watching House Hunters and thought about this-

Does your house have a closet by the front entrance for coats and boots?
Super common here except perhaps in older homes.
is this more of a cold climate feature?

My home has a downstairs coat closet near the front entrance.

I am not in a cold climate.

We keep our coats and raincoats in the closet. Until it is coat season, at which point the coats just stay in the mudroom, which is by the garage entrance we actually use daily.

Yes we have a front closet. Lots of shoes, boots and all season coats . Top shelf full of husband baseball hats , umbrellas etc.

Our front door and garage door are pretty well beside each other…lol wish we had a mudd room.

New homes around here for the most part do not have a coat closet by the front door. Instead that closet has been relocated to the mud room area near the garage door entrance.

We have a closet by the front door. We recently changed it out and turned it into storage (pantry items, less used baking pans, storage containers). We have another entry into our house from the garage and we use that for our coats. Heavy boots/work boots, etc, stay in the garage. I live in the mid-Atlantic.

Early on we didn't have front closets but we did have mud rooms with hooks for coat and a place for boots and shoes. My apartment has one and it is an inside entrance. My parents house where my sister currently lives has a front closet and we never used the front door always the back door with no closet there. In my parents house the front door closet was primarily used to store the vacuum and store winter coats and boots over the summer. That house is currently 63 years old.

our doors are next to each other too.

Our house is more like a cottage and the front door actually opens to the kitchen. We do have closets by the back door which is our utility room with our washer/dryer and freezer.

My house is a new build and doesn’t have the front closet and I really miss it. I set up one of those benches with a coat rack above and cubbies under for shoes near our garage entrance to replace it but it’s not the same.

Brand new home, has a coat closet by the front door, as well as one in the mud room coming in from the garage. Our last house, built in the mid 70s had the same, 2 closets.

We have one halfway between the front door and laundry room. We are in a cold climate.

Warm climate (Florida) and no closet by front entry. I don't know of anyone who has one where we live. It would be kind of nice, but not essential. We do have a large laundry room off the kitchen when you come in from the garage. We have a hooks both in the garage and in the laundry room that we use for jackets, umbrellas, etc and we have a bench with shelving underneath for dirty shoes, etc,. It works.

Having a new condo built. Small coat closet by the front door. Mud room off the garage will have a good sized closet and a walk-in as well. Previous condo had a very small closet by the front door/garage (there was maybe 5 feet between the front door and the door to the garage). Both are in Michigan.

We have one, but the coats and boots/shoes are all in our mud room.
The vacuum and some other weird stuff are in the front closet.

1979 home, coat closet as soon as you walk in.

My parents home, built 1960, had an 8 foot closet on the left side of the front door, and a smaller coat type closet on the right.
