Canada to announce new travel restrictions

So what are we supposed to do. Let people go wherever they want and do whatever they want?, virus be damned. This is not an easy situation for anyone involved, those living with it, those trying not to get it and those trying to make the decisions to keep us all safe. I don't think anyone has the right answer at the moment. We're all just trying to figure out how to get through this.

Take a deep breath everyone. One foot in front of the other we will eventually see the other side of this and then we will be able to rebuild all our lives.

Honestly? The right thing to do would be to just stop all travel, period. No one goes out, no one comes in.

Exactly!!!! Let's ban people from travelling to a warm tropical climate, but just let flights from Europe, Asia, and UK land here. It makes ZERO sense. It's like trying to put a piece of gum to keep the water from escaping a dam. It is all lip service. Let's find a way to make it look like we are doing something, but it's NOT solving the problem at all.

EXACTLY!!!!! All these restrictions are not actually going to stop the virus. Even the steep restrictions in Ontario and Quebec (which are totally unnecessary and uncalled for IMO). I am beyond frustrated with all of it.
At what point do we see an end point to all the restrictions. I don't see one right now. Alcohol and drug abuse are sky rocketing, domestic abuse is also sharply rising and people are living in VERY unsafe situations. Suicide rates are sky rocketing, People are loosing their livelihoods, businesses that they built with so much blood, sweat and tears. People are loosing their homes. Homeless shelters are overwhelmed. The mental health of soooooooooo many people is in jeopardy. But let's just put a piece of gum in the dam to keep the virus at bay :rolleyes2 The government is stilllllllllllllllllll clueless at how to keep the virus at bay. They are 11 months too late to close ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL boarders. Which is what should have been done 11 months ago. No exceptions....unless there was a VERY rigid strict quarantine when you returned home - TO STAY HOME.

I am tired. My family is tired. My extended family is tired. We are doing what is asked of us. It is coming at a price for us - like so many of us here. We feel that all the things we love to do are slowly being stripped away from us - which essentially they are. Now, it is even hard to even plan or dream of traveling anywhere (even in Canada).

Stepping down now. As you can tell from my rant, I am tired. I feel like we are even farther behind than we were last year at the start of all of this - with zero end date in mind. And the pieces of gum that they government is trying to keep putting into the dam are NOT working.

Maybe they are working. Maybe our cases would be much, much higher if the current restrictions were not in place. Fact is, we just don't know. We can all sit back and pontificate but none of us knows what really should be done. Half of the population will say there is too much interference and half will say there is not enough.

I think we each just need to do our own part to keep transmission to a minumum.

I think you may have misunderstood my statement it was really more of a rhetorical question. I was just trying to say that we need to give those making the decsions a break. This is not an easy situation to get right. It keeps changing and the solutions proposed need to change with every zig and zag.

I've added a "?" which hopefully makes more sense.

We are all frustrated and pent up and tired of this. Trust me I know. And I think there are definitely areas where our government could do better, but I also think for the most part people are doing the best they can. If you close something half the people will yell that it should be open , if you leave it open half the people will yell that it should be closed. If we all got sick people would blame the government for not doing more to protect them, if they lock us down we are being controlled. People were mad that there was still traveling going on, people are mad now that they can’t.

Honestly all of the answers suck. All of them.

Of all the things that are closed, the thing people need to stop whining about is travel. If you can go on vacation you are already way more privileged then a lot of people right now and you can suck it up and wait a few more months.

I mean seriously kids aren’t in school, people can’t visit family in long term care homes, and people want to complain they can’t go lay on a beach?

Love that bank. Where did you find it?

It's is just a image I found on the internet.

This is my real one that I bought at a garage sale. Minnie Mouse head piggy bank.
sorry the picture is so big

Rhetorical or not, I decided to chime in with what I think they (a) should be doing now and (b) should have done from the beginning.

Here’s a thought.. perhaps because kids aren’t in school, or sports or activities , people are unable to work or feel like they are contributing to society , because they can’t visit Grandma in LTC, their stress levels are way up and they need an escape. Or perhaps it’s not to visit a beach but to see family .. ( I know ppl can’t see family down the street , but for children they can freely move between homes)
Maybe it’s more a privilege to still be happy and safe at home while being judgemental of others.

That's true. The airlines have not really been playing fair with the money they do have from those cancelled flights. I don't know how the airports get paid in order to pay their staff but I would hope something can be done to save them. It's more than just the pilots and attendants on the planes, it's all the other people too. From the people in airports to the call centres, which I imagine are still really busy, and even travel agents. I hope things can recover eventually.

I work at YVR as a screening officer. About 500 of my co-workers have been laid off. Last month my hours were cut 25%, however I still have to go in 5 days a week. The airport is dead. We often stand around for an hour or more without seeing a single passenger. Our budget is up again in March, and we are all very worried. I hope things can recover eventually as well...

Unless they start dropping flight prices, I don't see how. For fun, I priced flights for our family of 4 from NB to AB - $3500. Just for airline tickets.

@mshanson3121 I think that is a pretty standard cost from the Maritimes to out West. Anytime I have had to book travel for co-workers going to a conference it has been no less than $700-$800 per person.

Yes it is. We've been checking for awhile. ☹ But if they're struggling financially, and need to rebound, in the economy we're going to be left with, not a lot of people are going to be able to afford those prices, normal or not.

Pretty sad that we can do a week at Disney cheaper than a week in AB, our own country.

Ugh, isn't it awful? For fun I priced out a trip with WJ from BC to NS for this coming August - $4400 for family of four and one of those flights was NOT direct. Priced out the same dates from Vancouver to Gatwick and it was $1K less, direct. It's disgusting how much it costs to fly across Canada. "oh stay home and explore your own country." Yeah well make it more affordable and I just might!

This is why we have almost always done our main vacations in the US instead of Canada. Even with the dollar, it's been cheaper to travel state-side than in Canada.

Flying across Canada is expensive. I can fly from Alberta to Orlando for cheaper than to fly to Eastern Canada. How SAD is that? It is not wonder more Canadians don't travel in our own country as much. When you cost into a trip to the opposite side of Canada with flights, hotels, food and car rentals....it is cheaper to fly internationally.
