Will Disneyland open before Disneyworld?

We’ve got reservations for June 1-7 at Pop Century but am getting more and more nervous that it’s not going to happen. My husband is a teacher that does not leave his students unless he’s sick. So if we can’t go during the summer, it’d have to be Christmas before we get that kind of time off. I’m considering going to Disneyland instead if it opens earlier. Was wondering if anyone else was having similar thoughts?

I really do think so, yes. I'm a local to DL and honestly, the situation here is not bad at all. The Los Angeles mayor has extended the stay at home order to May 15, within the city, but Orange County, to date, is following the guidance from the Governor and does not intend to superceded whatever his directive is. That order is open ended right now. So, it will come down to what the governor says. However, the numbers coming from our state have not been anywhere near as bad as expected.

That’s good to know! Thanks so much! Even if not by June, if Disneyland opened in summer, it’d be easier to go than to plan another whole trip at Disneyworld before my husband has to go back in August! With the fast pass availability low and all the unknowns, I don’t think I’m up for another reschedule! We already had to for our planned spring break trip! I’m appreciative of free dining but am starting to get stressed about June and all the unknowns!

That is great news to hear!

I'm not really sure the answer to your question, but we were discussing last night possibly going to either park as soon as they open and ultimately decided that Disneyland would be much easier to do last minute. They are taking restaurant reservations at both parks with dates starting June 1st.

The tightness of Disneyland Park could be tricky. DCA has more open space. WDW in general has more open space at all parks than Disneyland Park. I think the amount of open square footage will dictate how many people can actually physically enter the parks. So even if they are open, they may not be able to let everyone in. Not sure how they will decide who can enter, ie non-AP, AP, on-site hotel guests, people with ADRs/FP. Maybe it will just be first come. Lots of questions and uncertainties right now.

I'm hopeful kate3177 that Disneyland will open by July. For me, even if the experiences are limited, I'd be okay with that. I've wondered if Disneyland would open first as a trial to see how things go with changes to procedures before they open WDW.

It's pretty hard to figure out what might happen right now. Everything is foo-bar. Good luck with your plans.

ETA: Certainly from a weather standpoint a visit to DL in June/July will be better than a visit to WDW in the same timeframe.

Yes because Florida entered the curve much later than California. But its also possible Disney wants to open all the US resorts on the same day.

Why would they care if they open on the same day? It almost seems to me like it would be good to open one and learn a bit more about operating under the circumstances and then open the other when it’s ready. I’m also assuming of course that one area will be ready before the other.

Who knows? Marketing feel good thing. I was just guessing.

I believe DL is certainly logistically easier to re-open than WDW. And they are a couple weeks ahead on the virus curve as well.

Doubt it.

The trend suggests Democratic Governor ran states are extending stay at home orders, while Republican ran states are not.

I am not saying it is right or wrong, just pointing out the trend as it will have an impact on when the parks can open. I believe LA County just extended their lock stay at home order anyways, look for that to spread State wide soon in California.

I believe DW will be pushed to open sooner.

I think Shanghai and Hong Kong need to open before we even think the parks here are going to open. Not counting Japan because while they closed their park earlier than here, they didn't shut down a lot of stuff until much later.

Has there been any talk of opening days for Shanghai or Hong Kong?? I agree- I feel like nothing here will open before them!

Nothing confirmed or that isn't speculation that I've seen. I've seen a date but I don't know the source so it's not something I'm going to help spread if it's correct. But I don't see how June would happen, I don't know that we'll have movie theatres open all over in June.

I also don't see how or why one park would open before the other. It's great that states like CA and WA, where I am, have done a good job of staying home etc, but there are other state's that haven't or waited a lot longer to do it, so it'll still be awhile before the entire country peaks. It'd be entirely possible for states to not let those from out of state in without quarantine etc to avoid it getting worse again. Not sure how much we'll see from what China does, and how reliable the info from there will, but the fact is they are the one's opening first and we'll be able to see how that goes.

Just to address your last point, Disneyland largely attracts Californians, not that many people from out of state. If they wanted to test a limited attendance style opening, they would do fine with the local population coming out.

WDWs bulk of visitors comes from out of state tourists, so in this way, those parks are very different and it isn't unreasonable to think DL could open first in a limited capacity and just pull in local visitors for awhile.

I understand that but also know there are plenty of people that travel there, from other parts of CA and outside the state. I was there just over a month ago. Not sure they'd want to get into checking people's ID's to let people in and how else would you do it?

I'm not suggesting they limit who actually gets to come in. I'm saying that if our state enacts some sort of ban on entry from other states, and Disneyland decides to open up, there will be enough demand just from people within the state. Especially if they want to cap attendance at a lower than usual number, just the locals within a 2 hour radius would easily fill the park.
