I was just looking at videos on youtube. There are a bunch of young men and women out there. The hate on their faces as they walked with those torches reminds me of photos/ videos from the Civil Rights era.

The only things missing are the white sheets and burning crosses

I noticed the same thing. My guess is a mixture of how they were raised, and that something is missing in their lives that they need to blame someone else for.

Yes! I think that's absolutely true and quite shocking. It's sad over Facebook I've learned some of my "friends" (no longer) are racist. WTH, outta nowhere. I'm glad I saw their true side, but man it's disturbing.

No it doesn't scare me. I come across people like this in regular life. It is of no surprise or shock to me.

I just watched the movie Detroit today. Not much has changed in this country. People are just becoming more openly racist again. And social media allows us to see things we thought was no more.

I know my kids and husband have been mostly lucky. Growing up in a big city I'm happy to say they've all been pretty much immune to blatant racism as it's just not acceptable here. And my husband is 55 years old. I'm not talking about the occasional jerk calling them an ethnic slur but otherwise, they've all been very, very lucky. Well, once the waitress wouldn't serve my husband in a small restaurant in NC but thankfully that's all he's got.

Sadly, it's becoming acceptable again for the racists to come out of the woodwork. You know, free speech and all. It's going to get worse before it gets better and the racists crawl back into the walls where they belong. The human race can be an ugly thing.

I don't remember much of Vietnam, since it petered out before I even started kindergarten. I do remember the Iran Hostage Crisis, Cold War 2.0 (and nuclear proliferation), Oklahoma City, and September 11.

None of those things have scared me as much as Charlottesville did today. What I witnessed today was an American murdering one or more other Americans in the name of political ideology. That is as close to Civil War as anything I've ever lived through.

If Civil War II happens, I think future history teachers will point to Charlottesville, August 12, 2017, in the same way that historians today point to the Harper's Ferry Raid, the Rev. Lovejoy murder, etc. when referencing Civil War I.

I'd like to believe that a second civil war would not last long because there would be more people standing up to these monsters (white supremacists) than there would be on the side of racism.

It's maddening; we should be past this by now. I feel like a I grew up so sheltered: we'd watch civil rights documentaries and movies in elementary school, listened to MLK Jr's speech, etc. and it seemed like equality was just a given. We'd achieved his dream. I guess we never have, truly. But now these people are actively trying to turn back the hands of time, evoking imagery of the nazi party and the Klan.

I just want the hate to end.

Frankly it IS a scary time. Those who said that racists are emboldened are right on, IMO. I feel like the national climate and the proliferation of social media is really lending itself to giving people a mouthpiece for thoughts and ideas that once were kept quietly muttering under their breath. The sentiment has ALWAYS been there, but now people are acting out on those sentiments...and loudly shouting them.

On the same note...The whole thing with North Korea is super scary too. Feels like the Cuban missile crisis all over again.

Unfortunately I don't think that is the case and even if it is one side is already heavily armed. Sadly have a few of these types in my extended family and they have ammased enough weapons and ammo to provide for a small infantry. I know they aren't alone.

Well, yes. The current climate today absolutely shows that racism was never dead. It's been smoldering in the embers just waiting for the chance to light a true fire. And we know how fast fire spreads. Now it's back to the drawing board and hopefully we get the upper hand. History will always repeat itself, unfortunately. Humans aren't as smart as we think they are. Hopefully there will still be humans in future of the universe but man, are we showing our stupid side again.

It is not going to end. Like the pp said these people are raising their kids to be racists. That is a fact, we have a family right here in our neighborhood doing it. I'm talking little ones, elementary school age kids calling my ds's best friend the n-word. They had to hear that somewhere. I think anyone brazen enough to go up to a black kid and call him that word is never going to change, they are going to grow up to raise their own little racists, and so on and so on.

What makes you say that? I don't think anyone is implying you are a racist.

There will always be hate in our world and there will always be differences of opinion. Am I scared? Yes, for my children because the current global situation is deeply disturbing to me. I will not raise my children to hate but I will raise them to be smart and compassionate. I believe everyone has the right to their belief and to peacefully protest said belief. When it causes actual harm to someone else then it should be stopped. I'm not talking about having your feelings hurt, but actual physical harm. Hate in any form (racism, religious persecution, sexism, etc) will never stop, just as love will also never stop. Its a matter of how we decide to teach our children and live our own lives.

Luckily I don't believe that attitude is prevalent here.
I have tried to do my part, telling the kids to go away and stop saying it but all that does is get me called names by them. I just hope their family moves far the heck away some day soon.
