I'm sorry that you're getting "that type" of response here. I know you were looking for support.

Thanks Pea, but i'm not even really looking for support. I am scared, and i appreciate your kind comments, but i didn't want to set up this thread in order to get support; i just wanted additional perspectives; a discussion, which shouldn't be a big shock given that this is a discussion board, after all. Just share your thoughts to my question, no matter what your political persuasion, and keep it respectful. Thats all i want.

Semantics, maybe, but yeah, I took it as support because you said you were scared. Perspectives and discussion to help you feel better. But whatever. I didn't sense that you were looking for a battle within your thread, lol.

I can't tell the context of why you quoted me.

Are you saying I'm a racist?

Or

Are you saying social media has embolden them -- to which I agree, but not racists exclusively.

Absolutley not. I was agreeing with your social media comment and adding my opinion

p

Who said that? I did not comment on that specific protest. It was a general question on the state of things then & now. But read whatever you want into what is said
Easy read. The same people post the same things, very predictable. Any thread of this kind I wait for them to show up. But nobody thinks they are racists. LOL.

I didn't mean to cause you offense, so please don't take it like that. I just didn't want to create the impression that i was looking for this to be a support thread, so i wanted to clear that up. But kind words and empathy are always appreciated! :-)

Why wasn't today's protest cancelled after what occurred outside of the church last night?
You mean the white supremacist terrorist beating people with their torches. I have no idea why that was allowed. How many were arrested last night?

No worries, I didn't!

(I was mainly talking to others!)

Can you post a link to those stories, I can't find them

n/m I found a video of a large fight where someone took a torch and swung it.
I can't find any reports of people being arrested.

Editing just to add that I just saw some more videos and don't even see police there.

The OP's title and this thread is about this specific protest.

Three people lost their lives today.
Oh no. I didn't know the death toll from the terrorist attack is now up to three :(. What a sad day in America.

ETA: apparently there there was one woman killed by the terrorist and that a helicopter pilot and a passenger were killed in a related accident.

In my opinion, either you stand firmly against racism or you ARE a racist. I fail to see any middle ground and as soon as someone isn't completely outraged or horrified by what took place last night and today it speaks volumes about them. Alt-right, KKK and white supremacists all gathering with torches mobbing the University of Virginia and we are going to talk about, 'well there were counter-protesters too'. Ugh.

My kids are in university and are not white and my heart bleeds for those students that are attending that university. They must be terrified along with having been terrorized. I literally feel like I'm going to be sick typing this.

My kids are 23, 20, 18,15. I have worked with teens in our church for 25 years. The teens of 25 years ago to today have all been accepting of other races, creeds and beliefs.

I have learned so much from them all.

Those that seem to be protesting are older than this generation. I have hope for the future based on what I see around me.

We just moved 2 of our sons in to a college that was at the center of racial tensions in the 60s. The college and kids today are so different than that of 45/50 years ago. Ds age 20 and his group of close friends are an international melting pot.

I'm not scared. I'm hopeful in our youth.

I'm disappointed in those adults who should know better. I'm disappointed that as a society we can't peacefully agree to disagree and come to a common ground of accepting each other's differences in beliefs, creeds, races. I'm disappointed in leadership of our communities and country. I'm disappointed in those who are bull headed and can't get past their bigotry.

As to the mom whose child is moving on campus where the protests broke out, I am sad and sorry you have to worry about this. I would like to believe that the powers that be will be able to keep things safe and moved off campus for the students by next week.

No it doesn't scare me. I come across people like this in regular life. It is of no surprise or shock to me.

I just watched the movie Detroit today. Not much has changed in this country. People are just becoming more openly racist again. And social media allows us to see things we thought was no more.

I was just looking at videos on youtube. There are a bunch of young men and women out there. The hate on their faces as they walked with those torches reminds me of photos/ videos from the Civil Rights era.

The only things missing are the white sheets and burning crosses

MY DS is a 3rd year at UVA. We move him back to Charlottesville next week. So YES! I am scared. The protesters and counter protesters (most of whom are from out of state on both sides) have descended on Charlottesville twice in the last 45 days. This time it got violent. Next week 20,000 students are returning to town and not even their grounds/campus is safe. Torch bearing protesters marched through the middle of the grounds/campus Lawn last night! The university has NOTHING to do with the statue slated for removal in a city park in the town. I don't think the protesters or counter protesters should be allowed anywhere near UVA. The whole thing is a powder keg right now.
I am so sorry. I would also be afraid to send my daughter to school in such a charged atmosphere.

Maybe now people will stop saying race isn't an issue in America.

I don't remember much of Vietnam, since it petered out before I even started kindergarten. I do remember the Iran Hostage Crisis, Cold War 2.0 (and nuclear proliferation), Oklahoma City, and September 11.

None of those things have scared me as much as Charlottesville did today. What I witnessed today was an American murdering one or more other Americans in the name of political ideology. That is as close to Civil War as anything I've ever lived through.

If Civil War II happens, I think future history teachers will point to Charlottesville, August 12, 2017, in the same way that historians today point to the Harper's Ferry Raid, the Rev. Lovejoy murder, etc. when referencing Civil War I.
