Amazed and Disappointed

I didn't even want to calculate this until the TA calendar was updated, just in case they added hours, but since it looks like that may well be all she wrote for Aug...

I compared the same period we went last year with the current TA calendar for Aug and WE WILL HAVE ACCESS TO MK 27 HOURS LESS this year than last over an 11-day period.

Come on, Disney. Crowds DO NOT appear to be down.

Can't see what GOOD reason there is for this, or that I should just be happy with this no matter what. If this holds, and if we feel like it impacts our trip, I will be rethinking a trip next summer. And as a DVC member, I'd be booking that this Sept!!! Eesh.

I am glad it worked for you. However, it is NOT working for everyone yet it is the only option.

Even though it worked for me, I can see why others might not be so excited. We had got to enjoy a late evening meal at the Satu'li Canteen and then hop in line for FoL one more time. But for this option to work for you, you must be interested in the food, beverages, theming and/or the two rides in Pandora. If you don't want to do those things, then you're no better off than if the park was just closed. As for keeping all of AK open that late, I'll say that it seemed pretty empty at night in late June, even the second showing of Rivers of Light was 60% empty. Expedition Everest at 9:00pm was a 5 minute wait (almost a walk-on). Not sure the shops and restaurants would be profitable.

The way I looked at it, these extra hours are because Pandora is only a few months old and it gives an alternate option for experiencing that area to on-site guests. Other than that, I wouldn't count it as a substitute for other EMH or longer park hours in general.

Seems beyond stupid to go to the trouble of having it, only to not use it when needed.

When I was a cast member, knowledgeable guests would often call us stupid (or express other displeasure) for various things when they knew better than we did. Sometimes, they were right... and there are things that are stupid and inefficient. (I'll be the first to admit things aren't always perfect in any operation, but guests judged us -- both CMs and our leaders -- very harshly for various perceived slights or imperfections.) Sometimes there was a good reason that was not obvious to a guest observer, and it's not always everyone's business as to why it was the case.

I find it amazing that even with the constant increase in prices, crowds continue to climb. Maybe Disney needs to jack rates by 100% and see what sort of impact that has on crowds. I suspect not much.

During the Eisner days, Disney realized that tickets were underpriced relative to demand. These days, it's kind of hard to use the word "underpriced" when talking about $100+ entry fees, but I think you're right. There are even people on these boards who have expressed interest in paying even higher prices not to deal with as much crowds.

I don't think maybe people have done this before. The 10pm to 12am time on non extra magic hours was "magical" You could basically walk on any ride. Even with rope drop you can't do that.

Totally agree. Most people have left the park, and the hearty ones who remain have full run of the park. It's a catch-22. Most of your guests are gone and are not benefiting from the empty rides, and only a few people actually get to enjoy.

This was true of the REALLY, REALLY late hours.

But cutting back to 10pm close in Jul-Aug is ridiculous. As I posted above, we're looking at 27 fewer MK hours just over the same 11-day period in Aug. And it looks like Jul crowds so far are UP 12% from 2016 -- so crowds don't appear to be the justification.

If you look back at my posts over the years, I am NOT AT ALL the first to complain about Disney. In fact, I tend to try to EXPLAIN a lot of Disney's moves, whether I personally like them or not. This is inexplicable to me. Period. Particularly when combined with the disaster of keeping only Pandora open for EMH when last year all of AK was open until 11!! Ludicrous.

There isn't much that would have me questioning whether I want to book our annual trip next year -- a trip we've been taking for 12+ years now. But this type of thing has me right on the brink. We bought at BLT for a reason -- part of that reason was a ton of easy access to MK. They are REALLY stepping on that with these hours this summer.

On the flipside, AK is open much later than it ever use to be. Wasn't it just a year ago that it was done at 5 or 6? Now it's routinely open till 9.

I hear you but to be fair, isn't Disney keeping AK open much later than it use to?

Apples and oranges. This is not at all comparable.
  • MK has ~31 attractions
  • AK has ~11 attractions
MK is the most popular theme park in the world -- much more traffic there.
  • MK 2016 attendance: 20.4 million
  • AK 2016 attendance: 11 million
Adding some time at AK and taking away a lot of MK time is obviously a net negative -- that's just math when you account for # attractions and crowds.

And looking at last year, they have CUT AK hours Jul-Aug!

Looking at the line times for this supposed quiet time, it ain't any less crowded. Space mountain is over 120 minutes when I looked. It usually isn't hat long when I"m there over spring break. thunder mountain at 60 minutes, splash mountain over an hour. Honestly these are spring break wait times, not supposed lower crowd times.

Sure MK has more attractions but that's clearly not how Disney is deciding to spread their resources. You'll still have the occasional extra magic night where you can stay to midnight or 1am.

How did Disney cut AK hours for July? I'm looking at last year's July hours for AK (July 24 - July 29) and AK was closed at 5pm. This week, AK is open till 10pm with EXTRA HOURS till Midnight every single day.

July isn't a lower crowd time.

Wow. 26 pages of complaining that WDW is closing MK one hour earlier than they used to...even though they now have other parks open much later than they ever were (and I don't think it's apples/oranges at all). Jeez. I understand everyone has their opinions, but I just don't get the huge fuss. As I mentioned many pages ago, for me the timing was bad. My kids are finally old enough to enjoy later nights in the parks. We were just there a few weeks ago, and while it was a bummer it closed at 10pm, I can assure you it didn't take away a second of enjoyment.

Yes... ... I agree that this isn't how they're using their resources... guest accounts and math appear to suggest that isn't so bright this time -- that's precisely the point. And if you read the accounts, those 2 EMH nights that we will be "lucky" enough to have, have been no picnic when they come as early as 10-12.

It's math: what matters is # of "attraction hours". ALL OF AK was open until 11pm last year Jul-Aug to everyone. Now the park CLOSES at 10pm, and they keep ONLY 2 RIDES open. That is a net cut to AK. It just is.

No AK isn't open, Pandora is open till midnight and IMHO while the land itself is beautiful especially at night, the rides didn't do that much for me.

how do you figure that. its 2 hours actually as most nights were 12am. And what parks are open later? Animal kingdom open a bit later than it was before because they added a nightime event to try to keep people there? Epcot and DHS still closing at the same time.

Wrong. 27 hours less over same 11-day period in Aug. That is an average of 2.5 hours less per day during my trip.

ETA: You mention that it wasn't a big deal FOR YOU -- and that's GREAT!! But this is subjective and it MAY be a big deal to others. Pretty common on DIS! When I find that what feels like excessive "complaining" gets to me, I move along -- I let others have their discussion and don't try to tell them that they shouldn't be bothered. :thumbsup2

True, and AK is open till 10pm. 5 hours later than it was a year ago. Over a week, that's an extra 35 hours of park time for some guests.

Were they ever? Or have they even been recently? I stopped expecting great things several years ago. The only ones that are super worthwhile are 12pm - 2am whenver that is or if the park is open till midnight for all. Sometimes around 11 it would be super quiet.

That calendar says AK closed at 5pm last year.

As much as I would love to not have to deal with huge crowds, i'm not made of money. If Disney substantially increased their ticket prices, we would go somewhere else. I dare say that we would not be the only ones.
