This afternoon a Ryanair flight from Liverpool to City Of Derry airport landed at the former RAF base of Ballykelly, about five miles short of the runway it was supposed to land on! This was despite the fact that the pilot was in constant contact with the control tower and visibility was excellent. Add to this the fact that the runway at Ballykelly has no lighting of any kind, there are no control facilities whatsoever, the runway is bisected at one end by a railway line, and the base is currently an army barracks with fairly constant military helicopter traffic going in and out! Someone has a lot of egg on their face tonight, especially as it has been confirmed that there were no technical problems with the aircraft, so it wasn't an emergency landing! :rotfl2: :rotfl: :lmao: :confused3

The pilot might have been in a rush to use the gent's and thought, oh well here will do! ;)

Well Vicky, glad it was a man though...............you can just imagine the jokes if it had been a woman pilot!;)

That's why i said gent's Cath,everyone knows that a woman pilot wouldn't be that silly. ;)

Here's a link to the story on AOL News, hopefully it'll work;

The plane in the pic is not the one involved. Apparently the flight was being operated by Irish airline Eirjet on Ryanair's behalf and the pilot had been cleared to carry out a visual approach. Looks like he just put down at the first runway he came across. Nothing lie a bit of local knowledge to give you that professional edge, eh???? :lmao:

More info on pprune.

This was an Eirjet operating a flight for Ryan Air. They were apparently calibrating the Derry ILS which is the localiser to bring the planes in. Due to this the pilot lost the ILS and elected to go around then aligned on a visual approach to the wrong airport at Ballykelly. Unacceptable and i am sure that Ryan Air will let Eirjet know
