Wonder Alaska May 29th 2023 Port Excursions Report

It was so helpful to find different people’s experiences with the Alaska port excursions. So I thought I would share ours from our cruise we just completed.

Glacier Day…there seems to be a lot of mixed opinions about whether the Glacier Explorer excursion is worth the high cost. And further debate about whether it’s worth it for kids. We booked a month and a half out with a GTY rate. It saved us over $2k and freed up more $ for excursions. As expected the Explorer was already sold out. So I kept checking probably 5-6 times a day for any cancellations. Eventually I was able to add all 4 of us for the 12:45pm time. But I really debated about whether we would actually keep it. Eventually I decided my husband and I would go but leave our 11 & 8 year old on the Wonder. But in the end, I decided we would all go due to FOMO for the kids. From looking at peoples posts from previous years, the Wonder usually does not get as close to the glacier earlier in the season. This is due to seal pups. An Alaskan official is on the boat as they navigate into Endicott Arm to make sure they are protected from the ships. This proved to be the case for our cruise. The Wonder could only see an upper corner portion of the glacier. And people were crowded toward the front to get a glimpse. With the glacier explorer we were able to see two glaciers. For Sawyer glacier we got 50 yards away. For South Sawyer we were 1.5 miles away but it still looked huge. We were also able to see the seals and their pups from the explorer. Where the Wonder did not get close enough to see the seals. To keep the kids extra engaged I created a Glacier Day bingo card. They got $1 for each bingo. They were eager to find all the things on the cards.

This is a the glimpse of the glacier from the Wonder.A4B215D4-3AE2-411D-A6BC-1B162C2595A6.jpeg

We chose to rent a car and drive to the Yukon. Having flexibility with kids is always a huge plus! At first I had rented a car with Avis, but after reading more mixed reviews I was second guessing my choice. After a quick google maps search I found Klondike Electric Cars. They started renting out Electric cars last year I believe. It was a 10-15 min walk to their storefront. And along the way we grab a fry bread from Klondike Doughboy. Super yummy and definitely worth grabbing one! Our car turned out to be only a week old! A new spacious electric Mustang. As a bonus it was cheaper than our Avis rental and we did not have to fill it back up with gas! There was a binder with recommended stops. I had also printed off a copy of http://www.murraysguide.com/guide2001.pdf.I highly recommend renting a car from Klondike Electric cars! The one regret I have for this day, is not getting started earlier. People on our cruise that left closer to 7:30/8:00am ended up seeing 5 bears including cubs along the sides of the road. We only briefly saw one on our return. During May and June bear sighting are more frequent. We didn’t get on the road until closer to 10am.

The kids were most excited for Tsushi dog carting. They were pretty busy when we stopped by around 12:30pm so we came back closer to 3:30pm on our return and it was much emptier. Their last runs are at 4pm. This was a fun and beautiful day!

You can find all the details about the sights to see and stops to make in Murray’s guide in the link above.

It’s crazy that the Carcross dessert is so close to Emerald Lake.

I also created a car bingo for Skagway. The kids were excited to find almost all of the items. This ended up being a much bigger hit than I expected. They were super into it!AA5F8A95-EE2C-4D2C-A677-7D78E67140BA.jpeg

Since we knew we would be seeing the glaciers up closer on glacier day (Mendenhall being a popular option here), we decided to do a whale watching tour. I believe it was on this forum that someone mentioned Jayleen’s Alaska. Jayleen has two 6 passenger boats. I loved that we would not be jostling for a good view! The boats have a cabin to keep warm, comfy blankets, drinks, snacks, excellent binoculars that auto adjust. The price is only a little more than the larger, more commercial boats. You have to email for availability. But they said they still have availability this summer. Our captain picked us up only a few minutes walk from the cruise ship. On the drive to the marina we saw multiple bald eagles. There is a bathroom on the boat but it is small, so we made use of the marina bathrooms before and after the boat ride. My son did use the boat bathroom a couple of times so it was nice to have as an option!

We saw whales maybe 5 minutes after leaving the marina. It was a fabulous whale watching trip! We saw lunge feeding, lots of tales, mom and baby whales breeching, sea lions, and eagles!

We had the captain drop us off near the trail head for Gold Flume Creek trail after whale watching. This a great walk with kids. We did it round trip due to some construction. My husband almost ran into a large porcupine as well. We walked back into town and then caught the shuttle to the cruise ship. So glad we did this trail.D1635BD4-C3F4-42B9-8A00-EB09DE50551F.jpegD1635BD4-C3F4-42B9-8A00-EB09DE50551F.jpeg90BFEF2F-75B2-42B8-A245-F92B97AFD87D.jpegFE64DF13-BCD3-4EDA-936F-6917088A8542.jpeg8C722123-A1AD-48DF-87F0-9FFF4F71DD9A.jpegECBE2AF9-2E59-49EB-8A57-3397E546C493.jpegC67754BB-FC95-4540-A979-6BF1BE78EBC8.jpeg

Ketchikan
Our last port stop and the hardest one for me to plan. I had been to Ketchikan before when visiting a friend. At that time I did the crab explorer and most fjords boat tours. They were okay, but not worth the cost in my opinion. We knew we wanted to take the kids to the Disney Lumberjack show. I purchased the tickets directly from the Lumberjack website to save a little $. But we were undecided what else to do. A few days before we left for our trip I decided to book a car thru Turo (the Airbnb of car rentals). It was my first time using Turo and it worked out great. It was around $120 for the day. And the owners dropped the car just a few minutes walk from the boat. We returned it to the same spot making it a seem less process.
So we hopped into the car and drove to Settlers Cove first. We hiked the Lunch Falls trail. I saw some private or guided tours to this spot. But we saw very few people out there. But wow! This place felt undiscovered! It was so beautiful and so cool! It felt very surreal being in a rainforest like this. Maybe it helped that it had stopped raining shortly before we arrived. We all loved this hike. There are also multiple places where you can walk out to the water on the rocks.

Next stop was lunch at The Barn Door! I looked this place up before our trip and it did not disappoint! Perfect place for lunch with the kids! While waiting (10 min) we walked about the Marina.

Next we did a 30 min stop at Totem Bight state park. It was a nice little stop but I wouldn’t spend more than 30-45 min there.

After the show we had a bit of time left so we drove out to Rotary park (7-8 min drive) as it was low tide and we wanted to check out the tide pools.

Overall we were very happy with our choice to rent a car in Ketchikan!

Thank you for your reviews! We are going whale watching with Jayleen‘s in August, so it is great to hear that you enjoyed it.
