we took our kids when they were 6 and 8 and it was awesome however I would be inclined to say the ideal age is 12 as some of the activities we were interested in you had to be 12 for. That said, there are plenty of other activities so its not a huge problem or anything. Even at 6 and 8 we did a bunch of things and the kids loved it. At 12 they would have a better chance of remembering the trip also but two years later my kids still remember and want to go back (and we would have taken them this winter but live in Canada and can't get out due to COVID). Also my kids were up at 2am Hawaiian time because they usually get up at around 6-7am and we live in the eastern time zone so that kind of sucked. We did dolphin swimming when they were 5 and 7 in Mexico so that would be fine so long as they are old enough (Mexico is a bit more loose on age restrictions lol). We did a couple of hikes which were great, we did Manoa falls and Waimea Valley and it was fine. We didn't do Diamond head because my wife and I had done that on a solo trip and I wasn't sure if they would make all the stairs at that age but if we went back now (they are now 8 and almost 11) we would do diamond head also
