Trader Sam's Return Times

Is it possible to wait in line at opening and then request a return time for later in the night, instead of just getting a wait time for first available? Last year, once, I went at 4pm and requested a return time for 8pm and they allowed it. Was that a lucky break or is that a legitimate option?
