SSR or OKW without a car?

We will be staying at one of these resorts our first three days and just can't decide which to do without a car. I have stayed at SSR Congress Park several years ago without a car... loved the pool and view but remember it was a long walk to the main building.

No experience with OKW.

It's a shorter walk from SSR to Downtown Disney than it is from OKW. At DD, you can catch a bus to any resort - that's an advantage if you want to experience some of the restaurants at the resorts.

We have stayed at OKW many times without a car and even when we do have one, we just park it for the duration of our stay and use Disney transportation.

Every bus stops at the Hospitality House before leaving the resort but even the farthest building is only a 10-15 min walk to the front desk area. The walk to DD is 0.93 miles from Building 55 where the walkway begins.

There is also an "Internal" bus which stops at HH on its way into the Resort. It is noted as "Internal" on the marquee and then goes to all of the other stops before returning to HH to return to DD. Other than the first stop at HH, the marquee reads "DD/TL" ... again, every bus will stop at HH before leaving the resort so transportation to/from HH is easily accomplished no matter where your villa is located.

What WebmasterDoc said. All the times we've stayed at OKW, if we've had a car it has pretty much stayed in the parking lot. We've used it to get over to Cocoa Beach and the Cape, but that's about it.

The last time we were at SSR all the busses except the one for DTD stopped at the Springs last before leaving SSR; and the Springs bus stop is very close, maybe 1-2 minute walk by the pool to the Carriage Houses.

Yes, Congress Park at SSR is the furthest from the main building, but closest if you want to walk to DTD. The buses there are great though. OKW is beautiful and has a great snack bar, but SSR is closer to the action with less travel time.

Hmmm. We always stay in Congress Park and have never found it that far from the main building, just a very pleasant walk and actually quite close (we think). :) It's all a matter of perspective I guess.

We have never stayed at SSR with a car. Now, we have always stayed at The Springs which is very close to the carriage house, pool, etc. It's always been fine and we used busses all the time. I will say bus times vary depending upon the time of year though...

We never have a car on property when we stay at SSR. It's never been an issue for us, and we travel with folks who have difficulty walking. If we need to go far within the resort, we just hop a bus. DTD bus picks up first at Springs, and all the rest run in reverse. You can use the buses like an internal shuttle no matter where you are. :)

It never seems financially justifiable to have a car. We never used it. If you can't choose based on the distances from DD, keep in mind that OKW has bigger rooms, less to do, but no elevators; SSR has smaller rooms, more to do, and elevators.

A car can be great if you have infants or toddlers to make it easier (faster) to return to your resort for naps/down time. And we have found a car to be beneficial when traveling with my mom, who at 84 is quite spry but challenged with sciatica which makes bus travel a bit difficult at times. But in general a car is not usually necessary IMHO. The opportunity to let someone else take over the driving? Heaven.:goodvibes
