Pros & Cons of GC vs DLH vs PP ?????

We will be taking our first family trip to DL next year and know we want to stay onsite but don't know which hotel yet. We have been to WDW many times and have stayed at many resorts from ASMO to concierge. We are real resort enthusiasts. We are planning on staying for 5 -7 days. We usually stay at WDW for 12 days and resort hop between 2 hotels. Can you give us any insight on the differences between these resorts??? Thanks sooo much. If it helps my family consists of me, DH and 3 DS's all under 6 years old. (they are all huge Disney fans) TIA.

Given the age of your kids I would say the DLH is a good choice. The DLH is the most Disney themed of the three with the best themed pool. However, I will just list some information of each resort from my experiences and let you decide for yourself!

DLH: Very spacious rooms that sleep five very easily. Each room will either have a daybed or provide you with a free rollaway. Wonderful, themed Neverland Pool with two slides and a large hottub area. You can grab quick, inexpensive snacks, burgers etc from Crocs bits n bites that is right there at the pool. They also have a small coffee shop that is nice for morning offerings. There is a sliding door to allow fresh air in but no balcony to sit on. I have stayed at several of the resorts at WDW (ASMO, ASSP, ASMU, POR, POFQ, BWV, SSR, Pop) and I still think the DLH is my favorite resort, Disney or non Disney anywhere. It just feels so magical and being walking distance to the parks is so nice (but of course all three onsite properties at DL offer that perk). The DLH has the lovliest grounds of the three onsite hotels with waterfalls and koi ponds. You can rent little remote control boats, your boys would probably love. The DLH also has the best arcade of the three hotels. Very small laundry room however, with only two lousy washers.

PP: Really large rooms with very comfortable daybeds. You can pay an upgrade to receive a themepark view which I highly recommend. Its not as big of an upgrade fee as you would pay to receive say a MK view at the CR. Only one tower so you don't have to navigate through grounds or worry that you are getting in a building located where you don't want to be! Some people have experienced slow elevators here, I haven't in my two stays but can see how it can happen. They do have a glass elevator which is neat, esp. at night but that can be a long wait as they only have one. It is the least themed of the three hotels but does have some cool beach and Disney touches. Not many dining options, both of our stays the pool bar has been closed which is a bummer. Square pool, not exciting or Disney themed at all but with a very cool slide similar to Boardwalk's. It is the longest walk to and from the parks but not by much over the DLH. Taking the monorail from Disneyland or cutting through the GCH from DCA saves time and feet. It is the cheapest of the three. The arcade at PP is sorry and very expensive! The windows in the rooms do not open and there are no grounds to speak of at this hotel. It also does not have a laundry room.

GCH: Location, location, location! It is no nice to be right inside DCA, especially to change out of wet clothes from the Grizzly River Rapids ride! The rooms are the smallest, they do have some bunkbed rooms (that include a trundle) and some daybeds. They will also provide you with a sleeping bag. They offer nightly turndown service for all guests which is very nice. It is the most "wow factor" of the three, but not in a Disney way. It is very similar to WL. Nice pool, not Disney themed with two slides, kiddie pool, main pool and another pool as well. They have Whitewater Snacks which is the best place of any of the three hotels for a burger or light meal. They have endless hallways so if you are not near an elevator be prepared for a trek (reminds me of Boardwalk)! The customer service at this hotel was excellent. The rooms have little in the way of Disney theming and they are a bit dark. They almost all have balconies which is so nice! The rooms are smaller than the DLH or PP. To me the balconies, nightly turndown and customer service as well as the location make this one a real winner. But I missed the Disney theming of the DLH! And the parking lot is huge, my brother was staying there when we were and he had to park clear by Paradise Pier, not a big deal since he never moved the car one time but I thought I would mention it. Also, there is no arcade at this hotel. They do have a laundry room with maybe six washers and about 8 dryers.

I love staying onsite at Disneyland. I know many people say its not a big deal and I don't think it is as much as WDW, but I still think it adds to the trip. And with crowds, getting Early Entry each day its offered is a huge perk! You also get package delivery, room charging priviliges in the park, themed pools with slides and that Disney customer service.

I hope this helps! There is a sticky on the top of this board with information and pictures of all three hotels. Good luck with your choice!

We have stayed at all 3 hotels and had the concierge level, for younger children I would agree that the DLH is probably the best. It's the closest to the monorail and has the best themed pool for children.

We just got back from DLH and a concierge stay. The priority check-in was a breeze, our room wasn't ready, so we were given pass keys to the concierge lounge which is open 6:30 am - 10:00 pm. They have a continental breakfast from 6:30 -10:00 am, Snacks from 11:00-4:00 pm, wine & cheese from 5:00-7:00 pm and cookies/desserts from 8:00-10:00 pm. The beds were turned down nightly and chocolates left on the pillows. There was a box of mickey shortbread cookies on our first night as well.

We requested the Sierra Tower and a higher floor, which was done, however it was one of the smaller rooms. There are rooms that share an outer door and then approximately 5 feet with rooms side by side. It was not as spacious as some of the other DLH rooms we've had but we didn't spend a lot of time in the room.

The breakfast was orange juice, milk, instant oatmeal, around 6 boxed cereals (fruit loops, raisin bran, mini wheats, corn flakes), fresh sliced fruit (watermelon, papaya, pineapple, cantaloupe, grapes), apples and bananas, blueberry & bran muffins, plain & chocolate croissants, plain & oniony-poppy seed bagels, butter, cream cheese, jellies, honey....

Snacks were bagged chips & pretzels, tortilla chips with fresh pico de gallo salsa, bananas, apples, chocolate chip cookies, brownies

The cocktail hour had several wines including chardonay, white zinfandel, merlot & cabernet. The beers were Budweiser & Miller Lite. There were goat cheese wontons with a raspberry sauce, several cheeses including cheddar, brie, camenbert, blue cheese, chevert, toasted & soft slices of french bread and several kinds of crackers, mini eclairs, brownies & more cookies

The evening was mainly brownies and cookies

There was always coffee, various teas and the refridgerator was stocked with Dasani water, Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite & Apple Juice.

They had DVD's that you could play in your room and you can watch the fireworks in the evening, they pipe in the music track.

One thing to note is that 2 days in a row, the Neverland Pool had to be cleared because somebody had a bowel movement in it. It takes a couple of hours to clean the pool and re-sanitize it with chemicals, there is another pool but it gets extremely crowded.

The concierge staff was friendly and willing to help make additional reservations (including non-Disney events).

Hope you have a great time....we did!

We have stayed at PP and are staying there again this fall, and you know what the best perk I feel about staying on site is the package delivery. I am a shopper and the thought of carrying my packages around with me was like NO WAY! But the package delivery service was a godsend. 7:30 the following morning I would go downstairs and "poof" all of my purchases delivered to the hotel.

We have stayed at DLH twice and my dd who was 4 and then 5 loved it. We walked through GC but it seemed to 'adult" for her. Last time we stayed I called ahead and requested a "large room" as we tend to actually spend time there. We were upgraded to a pool view with two queens and a day bed and it was great. (especially since we both got sick and spent way more time in the room then planned.)
If you go ask for "special delivery: at check in, they will arranged for an autographed pic of some characters and it was such a hit.
have fun

Take advantage of the Vacation Planning service available to people who stay on-site. I have balloons and autographed pictures in the room when we check in. Also, the great people at VP will set up any surprise/treat you'd like to make your trip special!

Just by virture of being a party of 5, I would rule out the Grand Californian. They will let you reserve the room for 5 but there may or may not be a bed for the 5th person. They only guarantee a sleeping bag for the 5th guest.

If you pick the GCH, be sure to request a room with bunk beds. The room comes with a queen, bunk beds and a trundle bed. The trundle bed is stored under the bunk beds and is rolled out when needed. With the ages of your kids, I think this type of room would work out well.

Uh oh! I just reserved a room at the GC for the end of Oct. for 5 people, and we will definetly need a bed for all 5! Is the only option the 1 Queen with the bunk beds & trundle? I don't think that will work? Is the trundle at the bottom of the bunk beds what they mean when they say "day bed?"

The problem is the type of room is only a request. You get what you get. Even with concierge they wouldn't guarantee me a bed for the 5th person. We really wanted to stay thee and the bunk bed room would have been perfect since it was similar to llast year at AKL, but they can't guarantee the bed, only the sleeping bad. We wetn with concierge at DLH since they have a lot of rooms with 2 Q and a day bed for the 5th peron. They also have roll aways if by chance the room didn't have the day bed. No such luck at GC.

My only advice to get the bunkbed room is to check in early. We have stayed three times at GCH in the past two years--each time we were fortunate to get the bunkbeds and trundle (which my kids pull out and use to watch t.v.!). I kept calling the hotel directly to request the room and then checked in around 9-10 a.m.

With PPH and DLH, you have a much better chance of getting a room with a daybed but even if you don't get a bunkbed room, your kids are at an age where they would probably enjoy getting the sleeping bag and sleeping on the floor!

This line makes me think that you'll enjoy the GC the most!

We couldn't decide either so we stayed 3nights at the DLH and 3nights at GC. After all was said and done, we enjoyed the GC the most. Both hotels were great...but the GC just has that "resort" feel to it. :sunny:

I agree that if you are big on the resort feel, the GCH is probably your best bet. If your looking for more of a Disney themed resort feel I'd stay at DLH. We personally love both, and depending on what we feel like that year is where we stay. As of the last few years we've really been in to having the themed feel, always being in the "magic" and the DLH does that for us.

The GCH lobby is just beautiful. We could just live in there if they'd let us! :) It reminds me of vacations when I was a kid to Yellowstone! It does have a very big comfy resort feel to it. The view rooms are the best IMO. The balconies are also great to have. We spent a lot of relaxing time on ours overlooking Grizzly River Rapids. It is also the most expensive of the three resorts, which sometimes plays a role on if we stay there. Depending on the time of year too.

I haven't stayed at PP. We have gone in there for breakfast, and walked around. The only reason I'd probably stay there is to see the view they have of DCA, and because they are cheapest of the three. It doesn't seemed that themed nor does it seem like it has a resort feel to it. JMO

These rooms are to expensive for someone to be sleeping on the floor!

Do you know what the phone number is for the Vacation Planning service? I'd love to set up a surprise for my wife when we are at GC in October. Thanks!

My kids love doing anything that is out-of-the ordinary when we are on vacation, including sleeping on the floor! We've only stayed in the GCH rooms with bunk beds, but my kids fight over who gets to sleep on the floor with a sleeping bag!

They would also love it if I would allow them to go to bed without brushing their teeth while on vacation........which has never happened!!

:rotfl: I'm sure mine would be fighting over who got to sleep on the floor as well. They also would love the no brushing teeth on vacation too. The thing is even with one of them sleeping on the floor my aunt and I would have to share a bed since I don't think either of us could sleep on the trundle that pulls out from the bunk beds.

Wow!! You guys are the best I'm soo grateful for all the insightful information :thanks: I'm thinking that a split stay between DLH and GC would be fun. Maybe 3 nights at each. I'll certainly remember to utilize VP when I make our reservations I know IP at Poly and AKL were top notch. One of my twins favorite game is a DIsney game he made up its call "Where is ....." He names a ride at WDW and you have to name the park, and when the ride is in the MK saying MK isn't good enough you have to name the specific land. He is really funny. He and his older brother pretend the shower stall is TOT and they "escort " you in and give you the TOT speech. My oldest is 5 and he has been asking to go to Walt's home (what he calls Disneyland) for awhile. It will be a great time.

My suggestion would be to stay at DLH first then... We loved the GCH... we stayed at the PPH in Dec.. and it was ok, but didn't come close to the experience we had at the GCH. We are staying at the DLH in October - can't wait...

We have used VP both times and they were excellent.
