Hello Again All-
Got another question re insects(esp. Deer Flies) at the campground. How bad are they in middle August and has anyone found an insect repllent that works on them?I've read a lot of posts that say deer flies give the worst bites and I'd like to not experience that aspect of camping if i don't have to.:(

thanks again to all for your vast knowledge and patience

Trish

We just got back from a week at Fort Wilderness in a cabin and really didn't have any insect problems. One person got bit at MGM by what we suspected was a deer fly (didn't see it), but we didn't see any bugs at the campground. It was pretty hot and muggy for 3 days, and rainy for a couple of days, but we didn't need the Off, that I forgot to bring!

Just got back and we stayed in the 900 loop. And we had the yellow flies (deer flies). We also got bit at the campfire singalong and down at the rocking chairs at the Trails End.
We did notice after it rained....it wasn't bad at all. But if it didn't rain....watch out.
We tried all kinds of stuff to spray on us....it didn't seem like anything worked. And I live in Florida and don't normally have any problems with yellow flies or mosquitos.

Just sharing some info that I am trying this summer. These preventatives were mentioned to ward off "mosquitos and other pests". A daily vitamin B-1 (have been doing this, and haven't had a bite yet). Also, Bounce fabric softener sheets are said to be easy and excellent for wiping over kids (and adults) to prevent bites. Having tried that one yet, but I plan to give it a try. really hoping the bug problem doesn't take over in August. One summer the pools were closed at night for fear of "West Nile Virus"...bummer.

We just got back and my ankles are covered in bites. I guess they were deer flies - we couldn't eat at the picnic table because they would be all over us. We all got pretty bitten - and they hurt. Never used anything though, I kept thinking they would leave me alone!

I had posted a question about this on the CB. We had never had any problems with insect bites while at WDW but this year both DH and I were repeatedly bitten by an orangish yellow fly. The bites swelled and left welts. One even left a bruise on me. We've been home for 4 weeks now and although they don't itch anymore we can still see where we were bitten. I assume from what you were talking about these are called yellow flies. Do they only come out certain times of the year?
