I Love the Little Fishies. Don't You?

Corinna, I somehow managed to unsubscribe from this thread...

But the last weeks were so busy at work that I did not really notice it all. And suddenly you are already nearly at the end of the cruise while my TR is still stuck on me boarding the ship. But I have great plans on spending lot of time today getting it moving again!

I think your port adventures in Puerto Vallarta and Cabo both sound really great! And similar to what we did. I was eyeing the Calletas excursion, but Michael had seen something about a sea lion encounter on the DCL DVD and was so much wanting to do that that we went the sea lion encounter there. I had no idea that we could have done it at Calletas, too. :confused3 Now I know better. Our sea lion encounter was with Puerto Adventures as well and I agree that they were really excellent!

In Cabo we snorkeled somewhere else, but saw just as many beautiful fishes as you did. I thought the variety and colour of the fishes was much more impressive than what we had seen in Cozumel.

The Let's go to the Movies show was truly excellent! I liked it that they picked some less well known tunes and thought it was generally a wonderful selection. And we had been to the performance by Gavin Lee a little earlier in the cruise (who is a real Broadway star, he played Bert in Mary Poppins both in the West End and now on Broadway) and some of the performers really were nearly at the same level as he was. We did quite a few shows and I especially liked the shows that were a bit out of the ordinary most!

I can understand your sentiment about the Officer's Ball very well! That was one of the most amazing thing about this cruise that somehow it became kind of a mini community, not just people randomly being on the same ship together. You got to know certain people, be it CM or fellow travellers, and it was a little like living in a small town together. It really made me want to do more longer cruises in the future!

Those are the best snorkeling pictures I have ever seen. Amazing!!!!

So may pretty fish there. it really looks like a fabulous excursion. Now I am second guessing something I have planned coming up on my next cruise...and might have to switch to another snorkeling tour. :rotfl2:

Wow, that excursion really looked fabulous. I'm so glad it worked out with no jellies. The rock formations had me oohing and awing! And lots and lots of fish!

Love the matching vest and dress, you got some beautiful pictures. How bizarre about the CM not understanding about the hair do. It turned out lovely.

The excursion was amazing and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. Cabo is a very pretty port.

This is the one regret I have about the upcoming trip: there won't be any excuse for dressing up.

Amazing fish pics! Some look like they posed!

When I first looked at your dinner pics, I was wondering why you were wearing pink elbow gloves; then I realized it was your sunburn!

You could not fail fish pictures on that excursion. There were just so many. Mother Nature provided those gloves.

Great excursion. Love the pictures of Cabo and all the fishes.

Another wonderful dress. And wow!! You really did get sunburnt.

Thanks. I was lucky until we hit the Pacific coast of Mexico, but then the sun got me good and proper. Still, by then the trip was nearly over so it did not matter too much.

Hi Corinna,

What a wonderful day, the excursion looks fantastic, is it the Snorkel and Sea Adventure on the Disney website?. I am thinking of booking this one for our cruise next May, I am not a great swimmer but my husband enjoys looking at the fish and swimming in the sea, and your fish pictures look amazing.

Thank you for doing this report it has given me lots of ideas for our Panama Canal cruise next year, I think is going to be very similar to yours, with the same places in Cozumel, Disney excursion in Cartagena, Vallarta and Cabo, the only stop that we don't have next year is Key West, which it is a shame as we haven't been before, but on the other hand being a day shorter it gives us a day in San Diego.

Yes, it is Snorkel & Sea Adventure (CL58). It really is a fantastic excursion and I would be tempted to book this again if we end up in Cabo in the future.

I am glad that the trip report has given you some pointers. I think this is a fantastic itinerary and Key West, I can take or leave.

We had two days in San Diego and I can definitely recommend the Old Town Trolley Tour, but you can make up your mind about this after you have read the corresponding installment of the trip report next Sunday.

Finally im caught up on day 13. The purple dress is beautiful! I love the shimmer!

Great caharcters photos and I'm glad you got your excursion sorted out!

That dress was definitely a find.

I wonder where you had got to. I am going to do a lot of travelling for work from the beginning of September so I need to have this trip report wrapped up before then. It is also now less than 3 months until the next big trip.

It was a lovely surprise when I realised that they now offer the sea lion interaction at Las Caletas. I agree with you that the variety of fish was much better in Cabo than in Cozumel.

Let's go to the Movies was the only show I watched, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This was our 4th long cruise and as much as I like the shorter cruises, too, the longer cruises are definitely my preference.

Those are the best snorkeling pictures I have ever seen. Amazing!!!!

The snorkeling there was absolutely amazing. I really do love the little fishies and snorkeling will definitely feature quite heavily when we are on Oahu.

Day 16

Time definitely flies when you are having fun. Suddenly the last day of our cruise had arrived. We were awake pretty early and decided to get on with the packing so that we did not have to worry about this later. We also decided to do a load of laundry. We had done some laundry earlier in the trip, but as our washing machine had broken just before the trip and we needed to order a new one once we got home, it made sense to come home with as little laundry as possible. We had no trouble finding an empty machine. We set this going and then headed up to deck 4 for Walk A Mile.

We enjoyed our last Walk A Mile of the cruise. Our walking buddy that morning was Ashley, who was very excited as she was going to book her flight to Italy when we got into port. We had a nice time walking with her. Once we had said our goodbyes, we headed back to the laundry. Our washing machine had a couple of minutes left so that was perfect timing. There was no dryer available. We decided to check out the laundry rooms on the other decks. We found an empty dryer on deck 7. We set this going and then headed for breakfast.

We had hardly eaten at Parrot Cay this trip apart from our scheduled dinners. So we decided to have breakfast there that morning. We both had coffee and juice and I also had some chocolate milk. Graham had some fruit and yoghurt and I headed straight for the hot food. I had some sausages, breakfast potatoes and a ham and cheese omelet. Graham went back for some hot food and had bacon, scrambled egg, sausages and some toast. Once we had finished our breakfast, we headed back to the laundry to get our stuff from the dryer. I expected that at least some of it needed another spin in the dryer, but everything was dry. We took it back to the cabin and it was then that I noticed that various swim stuff was still hanging up in the bathroom. As this had a mixture of saltwater and chlorine on it, I figured that it would probably be a good idea to get this washed, too. I sent Graham ahead to his usual spot on deck 4 and went in search of an empty washing machine. I ended up having to go to deck 7 again, but there were a couple of empty washing machines available there. I got the laundry going and then joined Graham with my book.

After a little while I had to head back to the laundry to put my swim stuff in the dryer. This was perfectly timed again. I managed to find a dryer straightaway and then I could head straight to Studio Sea for the final installment of the Art of Entertaining series. I have attended the odd one on previous cruises. This one promised to be entertaining. It was a competition between Captain Fabian and our cruise director Jimmy. I was not disappointed. I could not believe how busy Studio Sea was. Every single seat was taken and there were a lot of people standing. Somewhere they got extra chairs from and in the end everybody had a seat. There was a lot of banter going on. Captain Fabian had chosen a dish with a name that I cannot remember, but which was described as a kind of meatloaf. The drawback with that was that it needed to be baked in the oven for 45 minutes. So Captain Fabian prepared this, but the one that the panel would taste had been prepared earlier in the galley. Jimmy accused Captain Fabian of having the chefs cook his dish for him. He had anticipated and had a video on his phone showing that he did the cooking. Another source of irritation to Jimmy was that all the ingredients for Captain Fabian had been chopped and prepared, but he had to chop his own. The real entertainment value though was to watch Jimmy cook. He had chosen Chilli con Carne as his dish. I put in an insane amount of hot chili powder and a whole bottle of hot sauce. I am seriously surprised that the panel trying the dishes did not catch fire when trying this. In the end Jimmy's dish won. I had so much fun during those 45 minutes.

By the time this was over, my laundry was dry as well. I collected this from the laundry room and finished the packing. Then I made myself comfortable with my book again on deck 4. It was not quite as cold as it normally is on the stretch between Cabo San Lucas and Southern California normally is, but I still started to get a little chilly lying on my lounger. So at one point I decided to go back to the cabin to get my blanket. I was in two minds when I bought this on our Alaska cruise last year how practical this would be, but I definitely had my money's worth out of this.

There was one last photo opportunity that I wanted to do. This was another group photo, this time with the characters in their nautical outfits. Those group photos were all rather special. I took my book when I headed inside and the line seemed to move rather quickly, but this may have been because I was distracted. When I had my photos, I joined Graham again and wrapped myself in my blanket on a lounger.

At some stage we decided to get something to eat. We headed up to Beach Blanket Buffet. The buffet on the last sea day is always the seafood buffet. This is not exactly a favourite of mine, as I don't eat fish or seafood. There used to be a good selection of other dishes, but they seem to get less from one cruise to the next. Still, there was some Macaroni Cheese and Beef Stir Fry and that did quite nicely for me. Graham had various seafood and some Salmon En Croute. Even though we were quite late, it was very busy. All the tables inside were taken. It was quite windy and sitting at the back in the open did not really appeal. Graham found us a table on the outside off to one side, which is covered. This worked really well. I did not really realize how perfect this spot was until about a quarter of an hour after we sat down and Graham spotted something close to the ship. There were a bunch of sea turtles. I was so fascinated by them that I nearly forgot about the food. I did eventually finish my food and even got some ice cream before we headed back down to deck 4.

Once we got back to our spot, we saw some more sea turtles, but the really interesting wildlife turned up shortly afterwards. Suddenly there was an announcement from the bridge that some whales had been sighted. We were on the main migration route, but we were really too late in the year to find whales that far south. So this was a real stroke of luck. Graham said that there was a grey whale out there. With my dodgy eyesight, I could not see it as it was quite far out, but I was genuinely happy for him. A little while later, there was another announcement for a whale sighting. This was on the opposite of the ship. However, shortly afterwards, we saw a humpback whale mum and her calf very close to the ship. Graham reckons that they swam underneath the ship. They stayed close to the ship for quite some while. They were close enough that I could see them with the naked eye. This was absolutely amazing and a fitting finale for an amazing cruise.

After a while, we lost our wildlife escort and I settled back down on my lounger again with my book. During the second half of the afternoon, we took our stuff back to the cabin. We had a few things to take care of. As one of our Platinum perks, we get two free prints, which we had to choose. I also needed to make sure that all the photos had gone onto the kiosk and therefore would go on the CD. I had been a bit lazy about this the last few days. I did find 4 that had not made it and asked for those to be added. Then we took a wander around the ship to take some photos. Considering that we had been on the ship for two whole weeks at that point, we had not taken any photos. We were about to put this right. At that point we thought that this would be our last cruise on the Wonder before she gets her big makeover, but fortunately there is a good possibility that we will be back in December 2015.

There was something else that I had not managed to do in two weeks and this is to have a Melon Mojito. Over the years this has become my favourite cocktail on the ships. Unfortunately the availability of this is fairly limited. This is really only available at Signals, but they have always been happy at the Cove Cafe and at the Outlook Cafe to get this for me. So we headed to the Outlook Cafe. Graham had a Cafe Toledo without chocolate and I had my Melon Mojito. Unfortunately the bartender got a little distracted and added some chocolate syrup to Graham's drink and had to redo it. He offered me the first drink free of charge, but I declined. After I had taken our drinks and sat down, he brought the first drink over anyway. It was actually rather nice, but I still prefer my Melon Mojito.

After we sat down, I noticed that somebody sat at a nearby table working very intently. It just so happened that it was George Scribner sketching away on a tablet. He had told us at the talks that I attended that he was working on something for Shanghai Disneyland. I was utterly fascinated and I have to say a little star struck. Eventually he finished what he was doing and got up to leave. We said "hi" as he walked past us and he actually stopped to chat for about 15 minutes. We talked about the Panama Canal and its expansion and his work for Disney. I was quite fascinated by the tablet that he had been working on. I asked him if this was an iPad and was rather disappointed to hear that it was a modified Samsung tablet, as the iPad does not have the graphics capability for the intricate work the animation department is doing. I have to say that was both a big surprise and a disappointment. Considering that Steve Jobs was a founding member of Pixar and a member of the board at Disney and that Mac computers are normally considered superior when it comes to graphic design, it is a real shame that the iPad is coming up short. I thoroughly enjoyed our chat and this was another lasting memory of this cruise.

We finished our drinks and then headed back to the cabin. I filled out the luggage tags and the customs form and we put our suitcases out for collection. We then headed back to deck 4. We wanted to see the sunset on last time and I have to say, it was a good one. Once the sun had gone down, we headed back to the cabin. Our stateroom host had already been for the turndown service. I took a photo of our towel animal and then we got to work on the customer feedback form. For the first time ever I struggled to fit the names of all the people who made the cruise extra special in the provided space.

Then I headed for dinner. Graham had decided to pass on the experience that evening. I like the menu on the last night and one of us needed to go anyway to hand out the tip envelopes as we had decided not to go to breakfast the next morning. So off I went. It was a bit strange and I really wished Graham had been there, but I did enjoy having one last dinner with most of our tablemates and the food was rather nice, too. I had the Grilled Potato and Goat Cheese Napoleon with Balsamic-Basil Vinaigrette followed by Potato and Leek Soup garnished with Sour Cream and Chives. For my main course, I had Roasted Filet of Beef Wellington covered with Mushroom Stuffing wrapped in Puff Pastry served with Fingerling Potatoes, Baby Vegetables and a Cabernet Black Truffle Jus. For dessert, it had to be the Baked Alaska. It is a tradition after hall on a cruise. I enjoyed the goodbye show and then I gave out the tip envelopes and said goodbye to our serving team and our tablemates.

There is something else that is a tradition for me. I have yet to see the Till We Meet Again Show but before this gets going, various characters spread out around the atrium on decks 3 and 4 for a last opportunity to meet them. During a previous cruise, we bumped into Stitch and ever since then I make a point to say goodbye to Stitch. Fortunately he is very predictable and he can always be found in the same spot. I agreed with Graham that he would meet me there to take another photo of Stitch and me. We both got there a little early so had to wait for Stitch. Quite often I get to spend some quality time with him as he hangs out a bit away from the atrium and therefore I am often the only person there for quite some time. This time I was not quite so lucky. I did get to say goodbye though and got a nice big hug and a photo. I told him that I would come to visit him in Hawaii soon.

The plan had been to head to the cabin after this and get an early night, but Graham said there was a really pretty moon. So I quickly headed back to the cabin to grab my camera and then we headed up to deck 10 to gaze at the moon for a bit. When it got a little too windy, we headed back downstairs. I decided that I would put my carry on outside for collection, as I did not need anything in there until we got to the hotel. I had a couple of chapters left in my book so I decided to read those before setting our alarm call and getting ready for bed.

What a great last day! How lucky to see the whales! The sunset pictures are stunning.

Last day. How sad. But what a great day it was. Love the group pictures and that whales sighting was such a treat.

Great sunset pictures.

Thanks for sharing.

What a lovely final day!

It really was a great day.

I could not believe when we saw the whales. We had heard some people saying that they had seen some whales, but thought they must have been mistaken as it was really too late in the season, but then we saw them ourselves.

It may have been the last day of the cruise, but it was not the last day of the trip. We still had two days in San Diego to come.

Ahhh so soon already? Lovely last day though. How amazing re the whales I love that they make announcements like that! Everybody must have been thrilled to see Mamma and her calf :-)

Love the character nautical outfits too cute!

Your evening meal sounds nice but bitter sweet it was the last! Been great reading though thanks for sharing!

Last day already!? What a fabulous cruise!

I would have been mesmerized by the turtles and whales, how amazing to see them!

And what fun to chat with George Scribner.

The event between Captain Fabian and Jimmy sounds hilarious.

Looking forward to hearing about San Diego.

Isla Cedros. As close to a guaranteed whale as its possible to get. The island gets in the way and forces the whales into a quite narrow passage. Its a pity there is not a cruise port here, just thousands of miles of not very much.

Yes, time has the habit of flying when you are having fun. Still, we still had a couple of great days to come and it is not long now until we embark on the next big adventure.

OK, now caught up on Day 14! That sounded like an amazing day. By now in updates you must be off the ship, but I hope the TR isn't over. I'm back from my travels and hopefully can catch up in the next couple days.

Wow! What a great day. That excursion sounds really awesome. You got to snorkel and then have a sea lion encounter! I would be a little afraid of a sea lion, I know they wouldn't license this in the US, but it's neat that you got to do it and the sea lion was so lovable!

The noshes sound nice, and I would have been all over the margaritas! I don't mind snakes, but I'm not sure that I have ever had the opportunity to hold (or be held by) a snake that large. The other animals were really cool too! I'm sorry you ended up getting so sunburnt, I know how much that can hurt as I have Irish and German blood and the sun loves me.

I'm glad that you were able to bounce back the next day.

I'm suddenly very hungry after reading about all the yummy cruise food.

Looking forward to hearing about what your next cruise plans are.

Seems like you had a great last day!

I remember that I spent quite some time chatting with Graham on deck 4 that morning. He was great at pointing out wildlife to me that I would have missed otherwise!

I did see the whales later on as well and was really surprised, too. But very happy about it!

The whole Captain Fabian vs. Jimmy thing was totally hilarious and it kept coming up again and again, like at the Crew Talent Show and during the Cruise Director's Morning Show. I think Captain Fabian is the perfect captain for a Disney ship because he is so willing to play along!

It was a great day. I really only come in two colours: white of lobster. I was not in the least bit worried about the sea lion. After all, I have interacted with dolphins, belugas and manatees in the water before and they are all much bigger and more powerful. Seaworld San Antonio does offer a very similar programme so they must license it in the USA, too.

The trip report is not over yet. There are three more installments yet to come. The next one will be due tomorrow.

I'm suddenly very hungry after reading about all the yummy cruise food.

Looking forward to hearing about what your next cruise plans are.

For once, I actually have no concrete cruise plans. I was hoping to do the Eastbound Transatlantic next year, but I just can't justify the price of this. So it looks like we will go to Walt Disney World for a few days for the Flower and Garden Festival next year and combine this with a road trip around Florida and maybe a little taster cruise on the Dream. We are then tentatively looking at a cruise out of Galveston for December 2015 combined with Walt Disney World. For our second trip this year, we will be firmly in the landlubber category with a combined trip to Disneyland and Aulani.

Great! Looking forward to seeing what you got up to in SD.

We had two very busy days.

Yes, we had a great day. I was so pleased when I heard before the cruise that we would have Captain Fabian and Jimmy. We had Captain Fabian for our Hawaii cruise in 2012 as well and he is just a lot of fun.

Corinna

Captain Fabian is by far our favourite. Together with CD Jimmy they are a great team. They both were on the 2013 WBPC and this one. I hope for next May too though that is pushing things a bit. Maybe it would feel a bit stale for 3 cruises. They are so much fun.
