Just wondering if anyone just back without using one?

Thanks:boat:

We've always had less hassle with passports, although we have travelled using government photo ID and birth certificates. Now we just use a passport.

We got back about a month ago and we didn't take passports. We didn't have a problem, we just made sure we had our drivers licenses and birth certificates for when we crossed the border, but there were no problems travelling without passports.

We just got back on Saturday and didn't have any passports. We drove across border at Detroit and flew from there. At customs going and coming we never were even asked for any identification - it was just 5 year old daughter and myself.

I've always crossed the border using a passport ... that's because I've been told it's less of a hassle if you use it instead of birth certificates/driver licenses. I can't say that I've tried without but it doesn't sound like it should be that much different. :p

Canadian citizens will continue being allowed to cross into the US without a passport, but Non-Canadian permanent Canadian residents will require a passport to enter the US as of Jan 1, 2004. This was supposed to apply to Canadians too, but Canada negotiated an exemption - but IT ONLY APPLIES TO CANADIAN CITIZENS.

That being said, my wife and I always travel with our passports, but we use Birth Certificates for the kids.

You need photo ID... I think they could give you a hassle with just a birth certificate... do you have anything with a photo?

Thanks...

We have photo licence and birth certificates and a copy of our marriage licence.

Great

Thanks for all the info...:wave2:

You say it was just you and your daughter? Did you have any kind of documentation from her mother that allowed you to take her over the border? I have heard that when one parents takes the children to the U.S they have to have written, notorized permission from the other parent to allow it, to prove that you aren't "kidnapping" your child (custody disputes, etc.) My DH is away and we had considered meeting in Fla, but I don't have anything in writing.

You're right - you need a notarized letter from the other parent (though I used a non-notarized letter last year - it's supposed to be notarized).

Also - both parent's names must be on the birth certificate.
