Digi Scrap Help - Letters

Ok, I got a kit adn it comes with letters. I can't make them work, though. I try to copy a layer adn tehn crop out the letters I don't want, but the original layer gets cropped too. I have tried to crop, save as a new name and then drag the lettes in to do the next one and I cannot drag it in again. WTHG? I know I must be missing somehting easy. Help! TIA!
