But You Have Promised Me A Subtropical Paradise

I can't believe the reaction of that Head Server. First off as someone else pointed out "The customer is always right" (unless they are manic!) But to laugh at you for the reaction. As you said, kids will be kids, but anyone behaving badly should not be tolerated, kids or adults.

I'm glad you got your table reassigned and have so many old friends on the Wonder!

I am still not over this. If I was to laugh at a customer who had a legitimate complaint, I would be out of a job and very rightly though.

Wow! I wouldn't think they would 'demote' anybody, maybe just add another tier to the Castaway Club.

Well, it kind of happened before. When they first introduced the tiered level, they uninvited most of the previous Castaway Club members from the reception and only opened this up to Gold and Platinum. That sure felt like a demotion to me.

Did you write in a complaint or put it on your comment card? Management should definitely know about this.

I don't like the sound of that. That does sound like a demotion. I hope they don't change anything soon. Or maybe add a level above Platinum and not change anybody currently in a certain tier.

I ended up speaking to one of the Guest Services officers. I am confusing myself here. I am actually quite a few installments ahead as far as typing them up is concerned and I often look at something and I think, but I have already written about this. Well, I have. I just have not posted it yet.

Day 6

We woke up at a reasonable time at 7:30. We got up and decided to get some breakfast. Parrot Cay was in use for the character breakfast that morning so our options were Beach Blanket Buffet or Triton's. We decided on Triton's, which was very quiet that morning. When we were seated, our server for the morning came over to clarify which one of us was allergic to bananas. I was absolutely floored. The previous evening this had never been mentioned. I had assumed that shoreside operation had not passed this information on to the ship, which has happened before. I was not too worried as after 9 previous cruises, I basically know what is safe for me to eat and I am a creature of habit anyway. If there is something new that I am not too sure about I either check if it is safe for me to eat or avoid it. However, the Parrot Cay menu is probably the most dangerous of the standard menus for me as some of the dishes on there contain bananas or plantains, which are also part of the banana family. Apart from that, the bread service on that menu is banana bread with a banana spread. There was also some normal bread, but it had all been touching the banana bread. So this was out for me. In the past, I had been given a separate bread basket with just the other bread. So I was just a little bit disappointed that the ball had been dropped in such a spectacular fashion.

Breakfast was lovely. We both had coffee and apple juice. Graham had Fresh Fruit with Yoghurt, Honey and Granola and Toast. The poor thing was still not feeling 100%, but at least his lobster colour was turning into a nice shade of brown now. I had a Blueberry Pastry, a Mango Mountain Hike, which is a mango and yoghurt smoothie with Granola followed by Eggs Benedict with Sausage, Tomato and Hash Brown. This is normally my favourite breakfast, but this ended up the only time while we were on the ship that I had this. Maybe I have outgrown this particular dish.

After breakfast, it was time for the DVC Member Celebration. When I had passed the DVC desk the previous evening and had checked that we were on their list, I was advised that they would have two Member Celebrations this time round as there would be a special announcement that would draw more people. I had decided to go to the first one. I was just about to say goodbye to Graham when he told me he had decided to come along. He had nothing planned. There was a quite a line at the door of Wavebands, but it moved quickly. When we got to the front of the line, we were each given a DVC Member baseball cap and one writing portfolio between the two of us. We were also given a card to fill out for the raffle. We went and found a seat and shortly afterwards a server came around with Mimosas. They also had set up a table with pastries, cookies, fruit and coffee, but as we just came from breakfast, we did not go over to this. Normally the Member Celebration is good fun with either Member Bingo where you have to find members that fulfill certain criteria and get them to sign your card or a team challenge. There is also quite a bit of trivia. There are also usually some videos about different parts of Disney. So usually there is something about Adventures by Disney, something about what is new in the parks and something about a DVC resort. There is also a bit of a sales pitch, but that is usually short and sweet. This time round it was different. There was no game. There was a short segment about the changes that they are going to make to the Magic. Then there was a video about the new Villas at the Grand Floridian and the rest was essentially a sales pitch for the Villas at the Grand Floridian. There were a couple of trivia questions, but that was it. I did not bother attending the Member Celebration on the second half of our back to back cruise. On the exit, we were given a neoprene gym bag.

We still had some time until our next commitment so I quickly took the goodies back to the cabin and then we took a couple of laps around deck 4. We then at a quick look at the photos from the previous day before heading to Studio Sea for the Castaway Club reception. Even though we got there with plenty of time to spare, Studio Sea was packed. We managed to get a table in a corner near the entrance. Not long after we sat down, the officers arrived and Captain Thord stopped by our table and we talked for a while. This was a real treat. I had told Graham that on the very first Alaska cruise that the Wonder did, they were not allowed to sail the inside passage due to some strange maritime rule. Graham asked Captain Thord about this. He explained that this is a rule made by the Canadian authorities that the first time a ship sails in this part of the world, they can only sail the inside passage (or at least the part that is in Canadian waters) during daylight hours. As this is not compatible with the way cruises work as a lot of distance is covered over night, they had to sail a different route on the first Alaska cruise.

Shortly after Captain Thord moved on, our cruise director Jimmy welcomed everybody and then Captain Thord said a few words, too. Shortly afterwards Captain Mickey arrived for photos. I got in line, which was surprisingly long for a Castaway Club reception, but still a lot shorter than the normal character lines. They also had a photographer coming round the room to take photos. I had never experienced this during a Castaway Club reception before. There was one drawback with sitting so far away from the stage and the bar. The servers coming around with drinks and canapés never quite seemed to make it as far as us. It was only when some people started leaving that we and the people sitting at tables around us were noticed. Graham had a glass of sparkling wine and I had another Mimosa. We both had some fruit and a canapé and I also had a chocolate chip cookie.

By the time we left the reception, lunch was in full swing. We decided to go down to Parrot Cay to get some lunch. Graham just had cheese, cold meats and bread followed by Amaretto cheesecake. I was a bit more hungry and had thyme and rosemary polenta, beef tenderloin with brandy sauce, macaroni cheese and risotto. For dessert I could not make up my mind what I wanted. Fortunately at lunch most desserts are mini desserts that are just a couple of bites each so I had amaretto cheesecake, Tiramisu, cappuccino roulade and White and Dark Chocolate Leaning Tower.

After lunch, I wanted to do the Disney Theme Park Tune Trivia. I had missed this every time it was offered on our previous cruises as it always clashed with something else I wanted to do so this time I was definitely going to do it. I asked Graham if he wanted to join me. Initially he was not too sure. However, he said he would keep me company until it started as we were still a little early. This was taking place in the Promenade Lounge where we enjoy just hanging out and watching the world go by anyway. In the end he decided to stay for the quiz. I think he had just got comfortable and could not face getting up. The quiz was the most involved one I ever have participated in. For each question we had to write down the attraction, show or parade, which park or parks it can be found in and then there was a bonus question to do with the attraction. The saving grace was that only the six US parks were included. It was still fiendishly difficult especially as for some of them only two or three bars were played. We did OK even though we were a long way from winning, but I really enjoyed it.

When this quiz was over, they started to prepare for the next one. As I still had a little while until my next commitment and Graham still had no plans, we stayed for this. This one was just a general knowledge quiz. Considering that this was very much aimed at an American audience, we did fine, but again came nowhere near to winning. Once the quiz was over, I was a little late for a meet that I was going to. Graham and I arranged to meet at the Rainforest Room later and I headed off to my meet. There were quite a few adult only groups on our cruise meet thread so we had arranged an adult meet in Diversions. It was nice to meet some people again and some people for the first time and to just talk. After an hour or so, people started to drift away as they had other activities to go to.

After the meet, I headed back to our cabin. I had planned to just pick up my swimsuit and my iPad, but while I was there, I decided I may as well finish my unpacking, which did not take very long. I then headed up to the Rainforest Room. I got changed and got myself a cup of orange-infused water and then I made myself comfortable on a heated tile longer and read. Graham was already there. Shortly after I arrived, he did go to use the various steam rooms before reclaiming his lounger. At around 18:30 I headed to the shower. I had arranged with Graham to meet back in the cabin at 19:00 as he needed to tie me into my evening gown. I managed to get showered and go downstairs, put up my hair and put on most of my make up by the time Graham arrived bang on time. He tied me into my gown and then I put on the rest of my make up and my jewellery before leaving him to it to get changed in peace.

My first stop was deck 4 midship where Mickey was out for photos in his golden tuxedo. The line was quite long, but seemed to move steadily. I used some of the time that I waited in line to take some photos of the Chihuly chandelier in the atrium and some other photos of the atrium. Eventually it was my turn and said "hi" to Mickey and had my photo taken with him. I then headed down to see if Graham had made it and had one of the complimentary drinks in the process. They did not have the Green Apple Martinis this time round, but I had a rather nice Cosmopolitan. I stayed in the atrium for a while, but Graham had not made it yet. So I decided to go back upstairs to see Minnie. They had started the line for Minnie, but Mickey was still not finished. I waited for a while and they called the line for Minnie forward, but it did not move at all. Time moved on and I realised that I would have a choice between having a photo with Minnie or having a photo with the Captain. I figured that I would be able to catch Minnie in her golden gown the following week. So I gave up and went back downstairs.

I had hoped that Graham would have arrived by now, but I could not see him anywhere. So I decided to have a photo with the Captain by myself. I was offered another drink, but turned it down. I had some photos taken on the staircase. By then it was time for dinner. Just as they opened the door to the dining room, Graham appeared. We were escorted to our new table and our new serving team introduced themselves. Our server was Jorge from Peru and our assistant server was Manuel from Colombia. They were both amazing. At one stage our assistant server from the previous night came up to us as he thought we had gone to the wrong table. They had disappeared from the face of the earth by the time the switch of the table had been made and so we did not have the chance to let them know about this and evidently nobody else had done so either. This was slightly uncomfortable especially as the fact that we had moved tables had absolutely nothing to do with them.

The menu that night was the Golden Mickeys menu and we were in Triton's. We decided to have a bottle of wine with dinner that night and went with the Californian Moscato that we had enjoyed so much during our Hawaii cruise. We both had the Crispy Cheese Ravioli served with Tomato Concasse and Lemon Zest. I also had the Sangria Bisque. For his main course, Graham had Oven-roasted Tom Turkey Breast with Green beans, Sweet Mashed Potatoes, Rosemary Stuffing, Giblet Gravy and Cranberry Relish. I had the Yachtsman Steakhouse Grilled NY Strip with Marinated Green Asparagus, Oven-baked Potato, and topped with Herb-Garlic Butter. The steak was lovely, but the potato was dry and tasteless and even copious amounts of sour cream did not improve it. Neither of us had room for dessert. I could have sworn that there had been photographers in the dining room that night, but I don't seem to have any photos.

After dinner we made the round of the photo opportunities. We started with the backdrop that they had used for the Captain's photo earlier in the evening and moved on to the staircase and finally to the backdrop with the ship at night. Chip and Dale were out in their formal wear and had hardly a line so I got some photos with them, too.

Once I had all the photos I wanted, we headed back to the cabin. I took some photos of our towel animal and had a look at the Navigator. Then I set the wake up call for the next morning and we got ready for bed.

I do this too! :rotfl2: I'll have to come back and read your update, heading out to do my not-so-fun 4th of July stuff, so maybe we can do something fun later!

Oh, the pics of you and Graham on the steps are lovely! And your dress is so magical!

The dress has definitely grown on me. I love this style, but was initially disappointed in the colour. The colour swatch on the internet looked like a proper gold and that was what I had been after. However, when it arrived, it was actually bright yellow.

Is that new jewelry I'm spying? Gorgeous color of the dress, gold would be nice too but I love the yellow.

Sounds like a fabulous day :)

Those lobby pics are gorgeous!

One day i'll get to gold status and be able to go to Castaway Club events.

Love the dress! I will finally get to go to the CC reception on my October cruise!

No, this is part of the jewellery I had made for our vow renewal in 2011, but I thought this worked really well with the dress. There will be new jewellery later in the trip report.

One day i'll get to gold status and be able to go to Castaway Club events.

I was lucky that my second cruise was before the new rules came in so I knew what I was missing.

Love the dress! I will finally get to go to the CC reception on my October cruise!

Congratulations. We have timed our changes in status perfectly. Our first Gold cruise was the Panama Canal cruise in 2011 and our first Platinum cruise was Alaska. It was great to have such special cruises to celebrate our new status.

Day 7

I had set the wake up call bright and early for 5:30 AM. I really wanted to see a sunrise this cruise and because the days would get longer the further north we would get, that day made the ideal choice. The sunrise was due at 5:54 AM and there had been an announcement the previous evening that we would meet the pilot at approximately 6:00 AM and would sail underneath the Golden Gate Bridge around 6:30 AM. So this all should work out perfectly. When Mickey called, we got up and got ready. We grabbed our cameras and headed up to deck 10. I was quite surprised to find that the area in front of the Wide World of Sports Deck was roped off. I expected that most people would be up on the open deck that morning and it seemed strange to cut down on the available space. We still found ourselves a nice spot just to the side of the roped off area where we had a great view. There were some people out and about already when we got there, but it was still relatively quiet. We were treated to an amazing sunrise.

Once the sun was up, we could see the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance. It was hard to believe that in about 30 minutes we would sail underneath it especially as initially it did not seem to get any closer. Then suddenly we got closer very quickly. It was very difficult to take photos while approaching the bridge as the sun was still rising and made it hard to focus. I also noticed at that time that my polarising filter was no longer on my lens. I looked everywhere for it and thought it was truly lost. Fortunately I found it in the cabin later. As the tip of the bow went underneath the bridge, the horn sounded. This was one of the most magical moments in my life and I choked up a little.

The ship's photographers were wandering the decks taking photos of people. Some people around me were actually quite rude when they were asked if they wanted a photo. There really was no need for that. The photographers were not pushy at all and in any case, having your photo taken does not commit you to anything. At this point I had not made up my mind either if I would get a photo package on the cruise, but at least I kept my options open.

Once we had gone underneath the bridge, the sun was no longer in the way and I managed to take some clearer photos of the Golden Gate Bridge. I also got my first view of San Francisco. One of the first things that I spotted was a huge Ghirardelli sign. I absolutely love Ghirardelli chocolate and one of the things I was hoping to do while we were in San Francisco was visiting Ghirardelli Square. So it was nice to see that this was not too far from the port. As we approached the port, I went back to the cabin to get organised for the day ahead. I also wanted to check if the filter was there. Graham stayed on deck 10 a little longer to watch the docking process. I was just ready to head out again when he came to join me. He quickly got his things and we went down to deck 3 to wait for the ship to be cleared so that we could get off.

The official all ashore time was 8:00 AM. We were docked at around 7:00 AM and were hoping that we would be off long before then. We had an independent excursion booked for this day and were supposed to check in at the Ferry Building at 8:10 for a 8:30 departure. We also had no clear idea where we needed to go, just that it was not too far from the port. Graham made himself comfortable in one of the big portholes on deck 3. I periodically checked if the signs that direct the people to the gangway had gone up. Just before 7:30, the sign had appeared in the elevator lobby directing people to deck 1 forward. We were in the perfect location for this. I got Graham and we headed down. Our Key to the World cards were swiped and we were officially off the ship. We were given quite a welcome when we walked down the gangway. We were actually the first people off the ship. This had never happened before. We picked up a map and asked for directions to the Ferry Building, which was fortunately pretty straightforward. The Ferry Building was about a mile away from here we were docked and was straight down the Embarcadero. As we left the terminal building, we heard the announcement that the ship had been cleared by the authorities and people could now go ashore. We just smiled.

The view was pretty stunning as we walked along. We also got our first glimpse of the historical streetcars, the F line. This made me smile as this had featured quite prominently in the book I had just finished reading. The trains on the F line look all very retro and we made the decision that we need to find time to ride this. Of course it turned out that we could have used this to get to the Ferry Building as there was a stop right across from the pier on which we were docked and right across from the Ferry Building. Still we would have missed out on a beautiful walk.

When we got to the Ferry Building, we had no clear idea where we had to go. We entered through the first entry we came across. Inside the Ferry Building is a fantastic market selling all kinds of speciality foods plus some coffee shops and food outlets. This most certainly would deserve a closer look. We did not get the chance this time round, but there is so much left to see in San Francisco that I am sure we will be back. We headed through the building towards the see front and there were docks for ferries going to a variety of places. Fortunately there is also a guide stating which ferry goes from which dock so we had little problem finding the right place in the end.

Our instructions on the excursion paperwork had stated that we needed to get the ferry to Vallejo, which had already arrived, but they were not quite ready for boarding yet. However, we did not have long to wait. When they started boarding, they checked tickets and we showed them the confirmation for our excursion. Initially he tried to tell us that we did not have a ticket for the ferry, but when I pointed out the paragraph about what was included that clearly stated transportation from San Francisco, he was terrible apologetic and waved us on. The ferry was a very modern catamaran and I was utterly delighted when I spotted a note near the entrance that free WiFi was available. I had brought my iPad with me so that I could read during the ferry ride which was about an hour each way. So we found ourselves some seats and then I caught up with the world of online. They also had served food and drink on board. As we had not eaten anything that day yet, Graham went to get us a donut and a coffee each. I was quite amused that there was a packet of Vitamin C attached to the outside of the coffee cups. The coffee was actually quite nice and the donut most certainly filled a hole.

When we got to Vallejo, somebody was waiting for us with Napa Wine Train sign. He crossed us off the list and we got on the bus. This was was rather nice. After a little while, he got on the bus to double check who was there. It turned out that we were missing a couple, but had a family on the bus that were not on his list. He rang the office and they asked him to wait a little longer, but the missing couple never showed. The bus ride was quite pleasant, but the scenery was nothing special. When we arrived at the station, one of the staff from the Wine Train came on the bus to explain what would happen next and when the bus would leave to go back to the ferry dock.

Check in was quite smooth. We were given our boarding pass and as we were getting off the train at one point to do a winery tour, we were also given a pin, which we were asked to wear. We then had the chance to have a look around the station, which is rather pretty. We also had a look at the two shops in the station, one of which was a shop dedicated to wine and what you may need to enjoy the wine and the other was a general gift shop. A little while later the first tour was called. They would take a bus to a winery and then come back on the train. After this group left, they told us a bit more about the wine train. Originally the train was built to safely take people from Napa to a spa town called Calistoga. Before the railway was built, the only way to get there was my horse-drawn stagecoach. This took a long time and there were a lot of highway robbers in the area. The track to Calistoga has been disused for many years, but a lot of the track is still in use. Another interesting tidbit that we learned about was the bridge of love. There is a bridge linking the station with the platform. Lovers from all around the world have personalised a padlock with their names, attached it to the bridge and thrown away the key. People believe that this will mean that they will stay together forever. Even though I have my doubts about this, I think that this is a lovely tradition and if I had known about this before, I most certainly would have brought a padlock. They did of course sell padlocks in their shops and even had the tools to personalise them with, but I am to cheap to pay inflated prices for a padlock.

Not long after this introduction, the first group was called to board the train. We were in the third group to board. Of course there was the obligatory photo and then we were directed to the dining car. The way this has been set up is that we would have a soup or salad plus our main course in the dining car on the way up, then get off the train to tour a winery and then have dessert and coffee in one of the parlour cars on the way back. We ended up sharing a table with a couple from Atlanta. As Atlanta is one of the places that are on our to do list, we made good use of the chance to find out a bit more about that city. Shortly after we were seated, our server introduced himself and brought us some bread and the menus. As this was sourdough bread, it was OK for me to eat. It was still warm and tasted heavenly. When our server came back to take our orders, he also came with two bottles of wine, which he explained was a welcome drink. I was quite surprised by this as our confirmation clearly stated that wine on the wine train was not included in the price. Still, who am I to argue. I had the Chardonnay and Graham had the Merlot. Graham had Cream of Broccoli Soup followed by the daily special which was Swordfish with Kale and two sauces. I had Baby Lettuce with Smoked Goats Cheese, Candied Walnuts and Honey Cider Vinaigrette followed by Beef Tenderloin on Black Truffle Potato Cake with Parsnip Chips and Cambozola Cheese. My food was utterly delicious. I don't know how I had time to enjoy my food, talk with our table mates and enjoy and take plenty of photos of the beautiful scenery. Shortly after I had finished my main course, an announcement was made that we were approaching the stop for the Grgich Hills winery, where we would get off the train for our tour.
