Amateur radio at WDW resort

I would like to renew my offer to contact licensed amateur operators while they are at WDW. 10 and 20 meter SSB are possibilities for a QSO, but if you don't have an HF rig while on-site, there is the possibility of a VOIP-assisted (IRLP) QSO.

While there earlier this year, I had great success working a couple of the area repeaters on 2m FM. One of them is on IRLP, as is a repeater at my home QTH. At the office (a short distance from the K2GXT repeater), I have a dualband handheld.

I have produced a limited-edition QSL card for contacts at WDW, and am willing to send you one if you work me from there, even over IRLP. Please reply here or PM me to let me know when you might be QRV so I can listen for you.

Thanks for this post.

I've just moved to the WDW area and haven't yet unpacked my radio stuff. What area repeaters are you using for 2/440? Oh, and what's your call?

Congrats on the change of QTH. Hope sunny Florida is more to your liking than New England.

On-site (off stage, north of DD) is the DEARS repeater, at 147.300 Mhz with a +600 khz offset, and 103.5 hz CTCSS.

The N4ARG repeater in Kissimmee is at 147.210 Mhz, with a +600 khz offset, 103.5 hz CTCSS, and is IRLP node 4338.

I don't know if you use CHIRP, but if you do the following may be helpful. Here is the relevant portion of my CHIRP CSV file for the WDW area repeaters:

Code:
50,WD4WDW,147.300000,+,0.600000,Tone,103.5,88.5,023,NN,FM,5.00,,,,,,
51,K4ZPZ,443.100000,+,5.000000,Tone,103.5,88.5,023,NN,FM,5.00,,,,,,
52,N4GUS,146.700000,-,0.600000,Tone,103.5,88.5,023,NN,FM,5.00,,,,,,
53,N4ARG,147.210000,+,0.600000,Tone,103.5,88.5,023,NN,FM,5.00,,,,,,
54,NO9S,444.450000,+,5.000000,Tone,103.5,88.5,023,NN,FM,5.00,,,,,,
55,AC0Y,145.110000,-,0.600000,Tone,103.5,88.5,023,NN,FM,5.00,,,,,,
56,N2ZXS,442.500000,+,5.000000,,88.5,88.5,023,NN,FM,5.00,,,,,,

Records 50 (WD4WDW/DEARS) and 53 (N4ARG/MFARRA) are the two I mentioned above. There are three repeaters included on the 70cm band, but I did not work them much if at all, nor did I work to any extent the other two repeaters listed on 2m.

Hello, I may be at DW in Sept. and was just thinking I would love to work some HF during my trip. Don't know if I will do it as I don't have a small HF rig. But might pick up an HT for the trip. Thanks for the freqs. 73 :mic:

I have a relatively compact HF XCVR, but I fly down, so I don't think I'd like to lug it down there in my carry-on or trust it to baggage handlers. Operators who drive there with a mobile rig, well, that's a different story!

Even so, with a compromise antenna, there won't be opportunities for rare DX growing on trees. So get a dual-band handheld (and maybe a quarter-wavelength whip antenna), and work FM simplex and the repeaters. Let me know in advance, and I can probably listen for you here on an IRLP-enabled repeater. Do likewise with a friend back home. You can have lots of fun on 2m using a handheld with a fraction of the logistical issues.

You know you want a handheld, anyway....
