Cass, Rob & Kira - July 2022 Disney Wonder Alaska Cruise - Worth the covid!

Oh yeah, the Dream is the one with no diet coke LOL! I forgot about that! Same in 2018, I thought it was weird and a one-off but apparently not!
The first day all the machines had them and then the second day only 2 that I could find. I don't remember that from the Dream, but it has been about 10 years since I had been on her last.

Oh wow, wow! Five minutes to spare is close! I've only done that once and I didn't like it! Heading somewhere fun? :flower1:
Wellll, it's a business trip, but to California, so yes, fun 😀. And the sprint through the airport is definitely something I don't want to repeat, ha.

July 13th, Part 2

We were officially in the Arm now and even though I didn't know it until later, it was Tracy Arm that we were headed down.

Look at the blue 💙💙💙

267.jpg

268.jpg

No matter where you looked, on either side of the ship, the scenery was gorgeous!! :lovestruc

269.jpg

270.jpg

271.jpg

I went back and forth between the verandah and the top decks because I wanted pics of all of the characters in their Alaska gear. :thumbsup2 Rob stayed on the verandah and dealt with the laundry for us.

272.jpg

Look at that! Beauty everywhere!

273.jpg

274.jpg

275.jpg

I set up the GoPro and did a time lapse. I will post it in the next chapter ;)

276.jpg

Back up to see #1 :rotfl:

277.jpg

278.jpg

279.jpg

I loved seeing "my" pool surrounded by mountains like this.

280.jpg

I walked to the front of the ship again, lots of people were gathered there.

281.jpg

They were selling drinks and giving out coffee, hot chocolate and snacks.

282.jpg

283.jpg

284.jpg

And back down to help Rob fold the laundry.

285.jpg

This was the warmest it got that day, 12ºC, about 54ºF. It dipped to about 10C, 50F.

286.jpg

287.jpg

288.jpg

290.jpg

During part of the journey, the naturalist spoke, which you could hear on the top decks and on your TV, on the first few channels. We kept our verandah door open so we could hear what he was saying. He didn't speak long though, most of the journey was in the quiet zone.

Rob was layered up, with his thicker jacket and he was still a little cold. :cold:

291.jpg

You can see Sawyer Glacier peeking out around this bend...

292.jpg

293.jpg

294.jpg

One last corner and we will be there! :woohoo:

296.jpg

Rob had wanted to go to Cabanas for lunch but I told him I wasn't leaving this verandah so he would have to go alone. :rotfl2:

I gave him an alternate choice and that's what we ended up doing...room service!

297.jpg

We ordered him some coffee to warm up, as well as some tomato soup. Then we also ordered a cheeseburger, hot dog, steak panini, wings and two key lime pies. If you like key lime pie, definitely get the one from room service, it's quite delicious! We ordered it a few times this cruise.

298.jpg

299.jpg

300.jpg

301.jpg

302.jpg

303.jpg

I had the hot dog, it was decent. The steak panini was gross. Rob said the wings, soup and cheeseburger were good. The key limes were delicious, as always.

Perfect timing for lunch, just as we finished, we were parked at the glacier, as close as we were able to get. It was on the other side though, so we ran upstairs to catch our first real glimpse of it. :sail:

I find that the biggest difference is the RH% for temp for me, Calgary is quite dry and for 14C I was much colder than I would normally be at home where the RH% is around 20-40%. If you read the meter, it was 78% RH at the time, so a very damp cool temp.

Yes, we are used to a very dry climate. Next time, we will bring an extra suitcase that just has your parka and other winter gear :rotfl:

The first day all the machines had them and then the second day only 2 that I could find. I don't remember that from the Dream, but it has been about 10 years since I had been on her last.

10 years, wow! Time flies! :duck:

Wellll, it's a business trip, but to California, so yes, fun 😀. And the sprint through the airport is definitely something I don't want to repeat, ha.

California is nice, especially Anaheim. :rolleyes1:teeth:

Oh yeah, we did a soft sprint a few years ago through the Ottawa airport, not fun!

Yay! I love reading your reports Cass! Alaska is on my bucket list. I am not a big fan of cold, but watching the cold and ice and beautiful scenery is very pleasant today as I look at our thermometer and it says 111 degrees! This is day 5 of over a hundred, and it is supposed to last until next week! I like heat, but not this heat! At 54 degrees though I would be like Rob and all bundled up while my husband would be in shorts and tee shirts!
Alaska is also appealing because I would not have to fly there, we can drive up to Vancouver. Yay!
Can't wait to read more!

Lisa

Those pictures are gorgeous! And that room service food looks so good!

Also anyone else slightly freaked out to see so much winter clothing at this time of year lol

July 13th, Part 3

You could see the glacier on the Bridge View channel, that was how we knew we had arrived. Also at this time, the whole ship rumbled a little. You can really see it on my time-lapse, which I will post at the bottom. Some people think this is when the ice hit our propeller. More on that later.

304.jpg

305.jpg

Back up to deck 10 for us...

306.jpg

We finally got to see the glacier with our own eyes and it did not disappoint. We were much closer than I thought we were going to get.

307.jpg

Mandatory glacier photos. :rolleyes1:rotfl2:My hair was a little windswept from when we entered the Arm and I went up front.

308.jpg

Look how blue that is....and how giant it is against the people on the Glacier excursion. :scared1:

309.jpg

310.jpg

311.jpg

Selfie time.

312.jpg

313.jpg

314.jpg

Just about then, we texted Kira to come up. I wasn't even sure if she had made it outside yet. :lmao:She had been in Vibe all day with her friends. I wanted to make sure she got to see it with her own eyes. Ten minutes later, she showed up with her friend G. They were pretty much inseparable the rest of the cruise.

315.jpg

Family selfie...

316.jpg

Then all four of us.

317.jpg

Kira and G left to grab some lunch finally and then back to Vibe.

318.jpg

319.jpg

320.jpg

We ran into Koda on the way from one side of the ship to the other.

321.jpg

Apparently, Kira and G had already ran into him. :thumbsup2

322.jpg

And here's the schedule for Vibe for Glacier Day.

323.jpg

We headed to the other side, just to lovingly stare at the glacier some more when I captured what ended up to be one of my favourite photos of the entire cruise. 😍

324.jpg

Mickey, in his Alaska gear, right in FRONT of the Sawyer Glacier!!! :worship:

325.jpg

They always bring a chunk of ice onboard, so we went and touched it. Did you really take an Alaskan cruise if you don't touch glacier ice???

326.jpg

327.jpg

One more staring contest with the glacier before we headed back to our verandah. 🤩

328.jpg

329.jpg

It was the perfect temperature for me. 🥰

330.jpg

Not so much for my husband. 🤣

I told him he reminded me of Chet from Weird Science. :rotfl2:

331.jpg

We got about maybe half-way back and we started to back up, into this little inlet. And then we went forward and then we stopped, completely. For quite a while too. We were confused and Rob was downright intrigued. I am assuming our propeller wasn't working well and either this is where we hit the ice or we had hit it at the glacier and then this is where they realized that it had caused some damage. :scratchin

332.jpg

Eventually, we carried on. The journey out was just as beautiful as it was coming in.

333.jpg

334.jpg

Part of the rock looks like a bunny, high up on the side of the mountain.

335.jpg

336.jpg

337.jpg

338.jpg

We're not out yet but I am at my limit for photos per post. I will continue in the next one but for now, here's the time-lapse from our journey in...

The blue glaciers.....OMD!!!! Just beautiful! They almost look fake. :)

"The Other Mouse"... you slay me. 🤣 🤣 😂🤣

Loved the pics of you in the pool and Rob in his winter garb. Too funny!!!

Hey peeps!
welcomesmile.gif

We returned from this trip a few days ago but as you can tell from the title, we brought something back with us and it wasn't just cute souvenirs.
crysmiley1.gif
sneezing.gif

I started to get a little tickle in my throat on the flight home on Monday. I was hoping it was just because I didn't sleep well the last night of the cruise, which happens at home sometimes, but by the time I went to bed that night, I knew it was something more. I had a fever for two days, I am still dealing with a sore throat and some congestion. I did an at-home antigen test as soon as I got to the house but it was negative. The next day, Kira said she felt a little off so we both tested and we both were positive this time. Kira also had a fever for two days and body aches but she feels quite a bit better now.

Thankfully, Rob is still testing negative and Kira and I have been wearing masks around the house and staying away from him, so hopefully he doesn't get it from us. 😷 🤞

I still have to edit photos but I've done enough to get started so please be patient, this may take awhile to get through.
puzzledsmile.gif

This was not a perfect cruise, we had some issues, food was mediocre at best (for the most part) but I will tell you now, this was my FAVOURITE cruise ever!
onesmiley2.gif

It was also Kira's favourite cruise.
feeldaluvsmiley.gif

And it was Rob's second favourite cruise.
yesssmileyf.gif

So, I hope you're ready for an overabundance of scenic photos, smileys and food porn.

🇨🇦 2022 Alaska Wonder Cruise

Here I am Cass, your biggest fan!! and I'm about to start your newest fabulous, ALASKA what! story. Holy cow, are you even kidding me. Okay, I've read the very first post and I am beyond excited to start!!!!!

July 10th, Part 2

We had planned to wander around Canada Place for a bit and then head for dinner but it was 6:30pm and the place I wanted to eat at closed at 7pm on Sundays! We hopped into an Uber and headed for Davie Street!

I was born in Montréal and because of that, I have a love of what I call "Montréal food". Since I am the cook in the family, I make it fairly often and both Rob and Kira have come to love it. One of Kira's favourite foods is poutine, that kid could out-poutine anyone on the planet. ::yes:: Rob's fave is my Steak & Pepperoni subs. He makes sounds while he eats his, to his daughter's disgust. :rotfl:

My fave is smoked meat sammies.

When I booked this trip, I knew where we would be eating already! :p

30.jpg

This place worked out for a couple of reasons. Montréal food, obviously but also it's located in a unique part of town, Davie Village. This area is the local LGBTQ+-friendly part of the West End and is adorned with rainbow flags, signs, art and more. Kira is a proud part of that community, and I am a proud, supportive momma, so I wanted to expose her to a welcoming, positive little area of this huge, diverse city.

When we walked in La Belle Patate, they had this huge Canadian Pride flag, which she absolutely fawned over.
rainbowflag1.gif

31.jpg

Sadly, they were out of smoked meat for the day but I did order us some poutine to share and some steamies. Go, Habs, go!

32.jpg

Steamies are hot dogs with steamed buns, in case you didn't know. ;)

33.jpg

Really good poutine! As close to Montréal poutine as you can get, without actually being there. 🤤

34.jpg

Once we were done, we walked over to Jim Deva Plaza and explored a bit. 🌈

35.jpg

36.jpg

37.jpg

We even learned something new!

38.jpg

And I found my favourite trees....palm treeeeeees!!!

39.jpg

I told Kira to pose in front of the bunny but she felt awkward when she saw a lady getting her hair cut right there but then the hairdresser was motioning to her to pose and gave her a thumbs up, so she felt more comfortable. She's always giving us bunny ears so this time, she's doing it to herself. :rotfl2:

40.jpg

We then walked over to the Independent Grocer, basically a very small Superstore, so we could grab some water and Diet Coke for the cruise. Kira was shocked and delighted. Shocked because there were homeless people everywhere and delighted that, inside the store, on most of the ends of each aisle, were all the different pride flags.

Drinks, procured, we walked around the corner and caught an Uber back to the hotel.

This was the Uber waiting area.

41.jpg

We dropped off our stuff in the room and then I unpacked what we needed for the night and the next day and tried to organize our suitcases a little better. I had to shuttle everything around to make it all work. During that time, I thought I had left my reading glasses in the Uber and just as we called our driver, Rob spotted them, under the dresser. I don't know how he saw them, they were pretty hidden! Great eye, babe! :magnify:

Our plan was to walk around a bit, explore and then maybe go to Fly Over Canada but Kira was not super pumped about it so we just walked around a bit instead.

Coming out of the front part of the hotel, right outside the main door, was a guy bent over doing...ummm.....starts with H and it's super addictive.
looky.gif

I don't think Kira realized what it was and Rob was so flabbergasted that he just kinda stood there, staring. I walked Kira past him very quickly and then I flashed Rob the evil, get-over-here-now look and he eventually walked away. The poor guy is just too nice and wants to help everyone but a little too naïve to know when to stay out of things. These are not things we see a lot of in the burbs of Calgary, ya know?

We carried on to Gastown, checked out the Steam Clock at the 30 minute mark, watched it do it's thing.

42.jpg

Looking back from the clock, you can see the Harbor Centre, so the walk was not far.

44.jpg

Walked by all of the cute touristy Canadiana shops. Most were now closed but the one that was open, as we passed by, Kira loudly exclaimed "This smells like Canada!" :lmao:

I didn't know that Canada had a smell but apparently, it smells like mini-donuts and horse poop! :rotfl:

45.jpg

Just a couple of blocks away was Canada Place!

46.jpg

And here is where our ship would be docking in the morning. The odd thing was that this was the ONLY sailing this entire season, that the ship would be docking on this side. For all others, it docks on the other side.

47.jpg

We walked over to the other side, I was on a mission.

49.jpg

I wanted to recreate a photo of my husband's derrière that I took way back in June 1996. :rotfl2::lovestruc

50.jpg

Mission accomplished! Twenty-six years older but still cute
flirtyeyess.gif

51.jpg

We decided to stick around for the sunset.

53.jpg

Next time, Fly Over, next time.

54.jpg

55.jpg

56.jpg

57.jpg

59.jpg

Once the sun had set, we walked all the way around, full circle.

60.jpg

61.jpg

Vancouver is such a pretty city.

63.jpg

Kira was anxious to get back to the hotel, she didn't love all of the beggars. She said it felt like she was in Mexico. She's not wrong. :rolleyes2

It didn't help that her dad wanted to help them all and had a hard time saying no or passing them. It just made her feel very uncomfortable.

For those of you who will be testing at Sinclair Centre, thought I would post this photo for you. DCL's website says it's across the street from the terminal but it's really not. I mean it's only a block away but if you're not very mobile, this is not as easy as they make it sound.

I am standing across the street from it, with my back to Canada Place.

64.jpg

And now with looking towards Canada Place.

65.jpg

Back to the hotel for us. And bonus, no drug addicts. :rolleyes2

66.jpg

Tomorrow is cruise day!!! :cool1:

Okay 1st day done, and as always, so so enjoyable! Thank you for sharing that about Kira, how amazing that she could open up to the two people she loves the most in life and enjoy her teen years, open. Beautiful. And you guys are just amazing. Loving Canada so far, the only place I've ever been is Niagara Falls many years ago, so this is terrific. Cannot wait to get on that ship with you!!

Loving this! That lunch looks great. We are going to be down the hall so nice to know the view is going to be just as awesome from the veranda. Curious how did you hang the towel above the bed? Such a cute touch in the room!

Was there advance notice on which character would appear where (and when) or did you just have to circle the deck and spot them?

Those glaciers are gorgeous!

Now I am worried about the ship! Just because you are off of it doesn't mean anything right now with the suspense lol!

Love all the pictures and it looks so beautiful but wow sooooo cold!! :scared: I'm interested to hear how it all went down with the propeller issue. I won't put anything here in comments to cause a spoiler alert. :teeth: You can really see the vibration in your video.

I'm caught up yay!! Fantastic Cass, just terrific. I laughed with all those blankets on Rob. You are identical to me, I'd always be in the pool at night, and my hubby would not, but he'd stay by my side. I love that about you guys so much. The glaciers! oh my. This reminds me of my trip to New Zealand, these skinny waterfalls everywhere over the mountains, just gorgeous. I am peeled now to see what happened to the ship, and what happens to your cruise (does it become a 5 day or something?). Staying tuned for more!

Was there advance notice on which character would appear where (and when) or did you just have to circle the deck and spot them?
In the navigator app you will be able to see the times and locations for character meet and greets. There will also be characters just wandering around randomly that you might run into.
