Payment due reminder for July 2021 cruise. Seriously DCL?

Got an email today from DCL with a reminder for final payment for a 3+6 b2b cruise in July of THIS year.

Instead of just canceling they're asking for payment on cruises that won't sail.
There is 0% chance any ships will sail out of the US this Summer.

I know it's a system with an algorithm that just sends emails automatically but still - Why play with people's feelings?
Just cancel all summer sailings - Chapek already said they won't sail until the Fall.

Why play with people's feelings?
Because they don't want to pay out several months worth of refunds all at once. Because they don't want to overwhelm their customer service department with several months worth of cancellations & changes all at once. Because they don't want the optics of cancelling several months worth of cruises- they want investors to think they're viable & keep investing. Because they want to be seen as a viable option for interested cruisers- whether or not those potential cruises sail or not, they don't want potential customers to see nothing available on their website for summer & as a result make reservations with Royal Caribbean. They want to maintain interest in their brand and not appear to be a sinking ship.

As PP said, its better for them to spread refunds out. As thanks for letting him hold onto your money until they're ready to cancel they are offering +25% credit towards a future cruise if you're paid in full. They see it as victimless since anyone can cancel on their own at any time up until a delayed PIF and get a full refund just as airlines are still selling tickets for coutries that are shut to foreigners at present. They HOPE something will change and don't want to get caught unprepared.

As for cruising in the US we'll be lucky if it restarts by fall of 2023...

Actually the state of Florida is doing everything possible to get cruising going now. They filed an injunction with a federal judge today to allow cruising to begin immediately from Florida. I’m optimistic.
Not true about "everything", because the state of Florida also opposes vaccine passports. But I digress.

The original poster says there's a 0% chance of cruises starting up. I believe there is a chance, though it's slipping away. At the start of April, with the pace of vaccinations increasing, I thought it was approaching 20%. But with little movement to start getting things moving again, I think it's slipped back to 15%. It's not 0% because otherwise, why is the Wonder off the shore of Mexico right now?

When did the Wonder show up on the West Coast?

I personally am with Florida on the vaccine. I believe that like with the flu vaccine enough people will get the Covid vaccine on their own that you don’t need to take away civil liberties. Plus, many people, if not almost all people, have some natural immunity at this point. Where we live pretty much every person we know has had it or has definitely been exposed to it. We’ve been at work and school since last August.

Saddly natural immunity for covid dosnt last long. They already believe we need boosters to keep up with the vaccine ( less effect of being sick not immune to catching). Unless you plan to catch covid every 6-12 months natural "immunity" won't work.

If we get more people vaccinated and it tips the scales in favor and it slows everything down I can see cruising opening up in a few month. But that's all up to 20%+ more folks getting vaccinated

I don’t think this is entirely true. If you watch some of the discussions that Desantis has held with health experts, you see a general scientific consensus on long term immunity that has been stifled in some quarters. Scientists believe that the majority of Americans had immunity to Covid-19 before they even got exposed to it through T-cell immunity acquired through exposure to other strands of coronavirus, which explains why most people did not get covid 19 or got very mild cases.

Anyway, this article explains it really well, much better than I do:
https://www.psychologytoday.com/int...4/are-we-immune-covid-19-if-weve-been-exposed
And this is a more serious discussion from the NIH from last summer (!) about one of the first studies on T cells and Covid:
https://directorsblog.nih.gov/2020/...ay-offer-lasting-protection-against-covid-19/
This quote from the article sums it up:

“Finally, Bertoletti’s team looked for such T cells in blood samples from 37 healthy individuals with no history of either COVID-19 or SARS. To their surprise, more than half had T cells that recognize one or more of the SARS-CoV-2 proteins under study here. It’s still not clear if this acquired immunity stems from previous infection with coronaviruses that cause the common cold or perhaps from exposure to other as-yet unknown coronaviruses.”

There seems to be an active disinformation campaign about long term immunity and I do not know why, if it is profit motivated (drug companies) or power motivated (government) or just fear mongering (media), but this immunity information should be much more common knowledge and is one of the reasons why I believe once cruising starts it will be smooth sailing. This, in addition to vaccines and new treatment therapies.

I am absolutely pro vaccine but I disagree that natural immunity doesn't last long. My boss had Covid in Sept and is still giving blood to help others. I think those that have had it can get a antibody test.

I’ve had it twice confirmed and once suspected (covid testing was not widely available the first time) three times since last march, with a 3-5 month gap between active infections. Every time symptoms were pretty darn bad and I was very sick for weeks. I learned the hard way that some people may have better luck with natural immunity than others, but it certainly is not foolproof enough to count on any kind of herd immunity.

To OPs question, most likely the reminder is there because you have to pay in full before you are eligible for 125% credit.

If this were actually true, COVID rates would be a fraction of what they are right now. And people actually getting sick is the driver of releasing restrictions.

I don't know about DCL, but I'm optimistic one of the cruise lines will start up this Summer. I don't how popular they'll be with all the restrictions.

Yeah I'm aware of the FCC mechanics.
It's just that I think DCL is being a bit shady about asking for payment in full when they know they won't sail in July, and likely the rest of 2021. My opinion.
