Shutdown or Lockdown in your area?

Everything is pretty much closed here. Today the Governor shut down interior of malls, bowling alleys and amusement parks.
He is also mandating that non-essential businesses have no more than 50% of their workforce going in to work.

We are in a suburb of Houston and no sit down dining but most are open for take out. Stores are still open and most are just operating at reduced hours. (Home Depot closes at 6) Until I went and got some gas a few groceries and drove through Whataburger for lunch for the wife and I, I had not left the house since Sunday. Working from home for at least two more weeks after this one. It sort of stinks because I honestly am working more from home than I do in the office. I work for an international oil company and things are not very rosey at the moment. Gasoline demand is starting to drop like a rock and crude prices closed a little over $22 a barrel today. Great for gas prices but since you can't go anywhere it's not gonna help consumers much.

We are officially on lock down. I still "get" to go to work (for now) because the Courthouse is an "essential" business.

Dallas has closed all bars, theaters, etc for now. Restaurants pick up, drive thru or delivery only. Schools closed maybe through end of school year. I live in a neighboring county and we will probably follow suit.
Us too. Mayor announced tonight that bars, gyms, clubs, and others will be closed or face civil fines.

Chicago, so far just closure of restaurants/bars and no gathering over 50 I think? All schools closed.

Will be moratorium on utility shut offs, no parking tickets payments, etc.,...Mayor Lightfoot having a primetime speech tomorrow night to outline measures Chicago taking to help its citizens. Looking forward to it.

Today the beaches are being closed... sw fla was getting even busier with an influx from the east coast beaches which were just as crowded ..
People just don’t get it :(

I’m waiting to hear it’s mandated for all but essentials to be in house/out of the public domain.
seems like it’s been going that way.
Perhaps it’s the Only way to reduce the
Mortality n illness rates which are likely to come
Stay well everyone!

At this point I do think that the entire county should completely just shut down (with the exception of essential employees
I would rather have 14 days with absoulutly everything closed rather than this add 1 new place each day thing that has been happening.

not in a million years would I ever think I would be advocating for this but enough is enough. People need to be able to stop stressing and get back to our regularly scheduled lives.

They could announce it tomorrow with a start date of Friday to give people 1 last day to prepare.

Well, at least Newsom is trying in CA.
The entire state of CA is now under shutdown orders. If any state, New York should have done this first. That place is getting out of hand real quickly.
Now we should keep the state borders closed.

This should’ve happened from the very beginning.
Since the beginning of the first cases in Europe to now in the US, too much dragging feet with doing very small restrictions at each step when everyone was bound to all be under shutdown/lockdown soon eventually. Too much culture of individualism and freedom in the Western world.

Now there’s reports locally of stores where about 1/3 of shoppers are not adhering to senior shopping hours at the various locations implemented by retailers in CA. How convenient for those younger/middle age people shopping in the mornings along with all those seniors who are most vulnerable. Hopefully, they are there because they haven’t heard of such changes yet.

Between people not taking the situation seriously, including those nonchalantly shopping alongside seniors during their time set aside.....feces skulls, lol.

Edit: forgot to mention that my city in the San Francisco Bay Area suburbs locked all entrances to public parks and playgrounds because city officials kept seeing playdates and kids hanging out in groups in the parks. As a result, there was definitely some heated words thrown around on Nextdoor here.

Get your TP while you can:

"New York City considers a shelter-in-place order as public life is curtailed.

Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York City said that residents should prepare for the possibility of a “shelter in place” order to be announced in the next 48 hours, as the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in New York City neared 1,000.

Mr. de Blasio said that a decision on such an order, which would require coordination between the city and New York State, had not been made. But he said he believed that kind of recommendation, which is in place in San Francisco, would be “the right guidance.”

New York City has already come to a halt, but a “shelter in place” recommendation would be a major escalation in restrictions on public life. The mayor did not elaborate on what a “shelter in place” order would look like in practice.

Mr. de Blasio said that the city was rushing to add more hospital beds.
By canceling elective surgeries and dismissing patients from hospitals more quickly, the city could free up about 7,000 patient beds, the mayor said. Another 1,200 to 1,300 beds could be added by taking over unused space in hospitals and converting a newly built nursing home in Brooklyn that was not yet occupied."

Gov Cuomo says he won't do it....at least as of this afternoon when I saw a press conference. I don't see how it can't be done. NY has one of the highest infection rates. NYC and statewide I would think, especially since California has now put it in place.

There's yet to be a lockdown in the UK, but already, some stores (including the Disney Store) have temporarily shut down, and some fast food restaurants have gone to takeout/drive-thru only. And despite measures to ration essential items, supermarkets across the UK are still frequently selling out of bog roll, tissues and even pasta.

Bogroll? Wow, haven't heard that term in a really long time, LOL
I get the dry pasta sellouts because it's such a pantry staple but like you and many others find the TP shortages a true head scratching moment.

In an earlier post I said that Cuomo and de Blasio are constantly at odds; the mayor's Monday statement and Governor's Thursday press conference is just proof positive.
I think it can and should be done as well. I do understand that NYC is one of the largest economic engines in the nation and there will be an financial price to pay but think most are willing to deal with that.

Yes, those two can never be on the same page it seems. We are in the suburbs of NYC so anxious to see what happens to the whole of the State. If LA did it I think NY should too.

Californian here....I was driving from Los Angles to San Francisco last night to bring my son toilet paper-no, , there is no paper up north, when the announcement came on. California is on lockdown. We can still run errands and exercise outside, but only essential businesses are open. When we got to his city around 7 pm, all fast food places and stores were already closed.

I'm in NYC. I feel like a lot of us are basically sheltering in place as much as possible. Manhattan appears to be deserted from the few photos that have been shared by the few people who still are out and about there. I'm not sure people who don't live in a city can fully grasp how difficult it is for a city to be this quiet. Even in my neighborhood, the main avenues are still bustling a bit because everywhere "essential" is in one area and the residential side streets all use the same strips of businesses. It looks busier when people are on foot, I think.

Either way, most I know are basically sheltering in place except to go to the grocery store, pharmacy, perhaps pick up takeout or go for a stroll around the neighborhood. It's basically all there is to do at this point, since I believe today is also the last day for nail salons, hair salons, barbers, etc. Man, do I regret not getting a pedicure before this all started.

@skyblue17
It hasn't been this quiet since 9/11 for my memory banks. Fortunately, it's a different type of quiet. The man is going down to 59th/Columbus Circle to Whole Foods to get fresh OJ since the frozen version hasn't made him happy. I asked him why he was passing at least 3 of em to get there and he said he just needs to see people; I wished him well with the dream, LOL.
No pedicures is a little bit too wild and wooly for me; thank goodness I've a full compliment of Tweezerman tools; Revlon doesn't cut it literally or figuratively;).

I think there's a major enforceablility concern in rural areas, so statewide lockdowns are going to be different and slower coming than city-level lockdowns. The ratio of law enforcement to the number of businesses being shuttered and the way those businesses are spread out will make it hard to enforce on the supply side, and the fact that grocery shopping, outdoor activity, and other exceptions to the lockdown generally require rural residents drive to those places makes locking down the demand side equally difficult. And rural residents tend to be generally more individualistic, IME, and more skeptical of the containment measures specifically.

My town, for example, has two separate business districts, a wealth of trails just outside of town that are perfect for exercising/getting out of the house while still observing distance precautions, and a half-dozen essential businesses. We also have 3 police cars/7 officers. There's usually only one car on duty at any given time and one officer at the station during business hours. How does enforcement work, under those circumstances? The playgrounds are closed, officially, but we don't even have the resources to enforce that so in reality the closure is strictly voluntary. And the math is even worse in truly rural areas - the townships around me all rely on the county sheriff for police protection, and response times run 20-30 minutes when there's a call. There simply aren't resources to ensure people stay home.
