The Running Thread - 2019

ATYQOTD: Greenville-Spartanburg Airport to Anaheim: 3056 mi.

ATTQOTD: Asics Gel Kayano running shoes for cushioning and for stability. I'd step on a rock, twist an ankle, take a tumble, and knock myself out if I was running barefoot!

That being said, when I was a young teen, my family had a basketball goal on a rocky asphalt driveway and I played barefoot out there all the time. My feet developed a thick leathery bottom that didn't mind it. Once I left for college and quit playing out there, I could not even walk on it without shoes when I was home visiting. So I understand how someone can run on asphalt without shoes after the feet have proper conditioning, but what about all the snot rockets and phlegm spitting all around??? (Sorry)

QOTD: Today I wanted to ask if anyone here has or currently a barefoot runner. If so, tell us about your experience please.

ATTQOTD: No way. My feet are always cold, so I'm always wearing shoes or at least slippers, even outside, even in the summer. And I can't imagine things like stepping on gravel... yikes.

Two summers ago, I was running on one of our paved multi-use trails that have lots of walkers, runners, bikers, etc. Two youngish men (maybe college age) went zipping by me at quite a fast pace, both barefoot. I happened to go by someone walking the other way at that time, and we both looked at their feet, looked at each other, and kind of shrugged in disbelief. All I could think was ouch!

ATTQOTD: I do run at OTF in some minimal-ish shoes (Altra Solstice) but not outdoors. I would never run in bare feet. I can't stand being barefoot or wearing sandals even when I'm not running. I am always wearing sneakers or hiking boots, even in my house. Once in a great while, I'll wear slippers, but usually am just wearing regular shoes until bed.

My MIL and I were just talking about this 2 days ago. My inlaws always wear shoes in their house and my husband and I never ever wear outside shoes at home (I might wear slippers that have never been outside). I take my shoes off as soon as I get in the door. And to both of us, it seems funny to not do it our way!

Read that in Jerry Seinfeld.
I love that Seinfeld episode where Jerry has to race against an old classmate. The ending gets me every single time.

ATTQOTD: I always run in shoes. Not sure I would do well running barefoot.

ATTQOTD: I'm still figuring out motivation when I don't have a race on the horizon. I haven't run since Dopey due to a combination of work getting really busy and not having a race until September. I know I can be good enough to go if I start running again come May. I know that's not ideal, but having trained the past 3 years during the busiest months of the year at work, I am honestly enjoying not needing to fit in that time on top of already long days in the office 6 days a week.

And yet the allure of Star Wars Rival Run 2020 means I'll probably be training again next year during this exact time of year.

ATTQOTD- No barefoot running for me. My feet prefer soft and cushiony too.

I saw a guy at the OC Marathon run barefoot, in the rain, with potholes, broken glass, slippery water stops, and of course all of the souvenirs left by several thousand runners (used gel packets, gum, spit, etc., etc.). Not as impressive as the guy who dribbled a basketball the entire marathon or the other guy who ran the whole thing......BACKWARDS!

I am so over February...

February 2019 running totals
Distance: 53km (33 miles)
Average speed: 7’28” per km (12min per mile)

I realize that those are my worst numbers since I have started to “really” run/race and keep track. However, I acknowledge that I am proud of everything single one of them, and also of the ones that I did not run: They would have been unsafe or unhealthy.

Now, time to turn that page and get ready for March!

MATTQOTD: I started running to be able to enter a race and earn the bling. I’ve discovered that I love running! It requires minimal equipment, no partners or teammates, can actually be done in most weather, and can usually be done on vacation! That said, I always have a race on the calendar.

TATTQOTD: I ran the Fortitude 10K last year in Ft Collins, CO which is 1104 miles away from Monticello, AR

ATTQOTD: No barefoot running for me!

Ugh. The forecast for my half on Sunday is a cold rain. Any suggestions on what to wear? I do have some ponchos leftover from Disney that I could use at the start!

Side Note:
My coworker just got back from Florida and said he likes Universal better than WDW. He also said Epcot "was just ok, I wouldn't go back."
Just when you think you like someone...
If he's a real coaster enthusiast I could see that. I think there are things Universal does well, and think the success of wizarding world is something that's resulted in both parks stepping up their games.

I would try and keep myself and my feet dry. Typically I would just use black Garbage bags with a head whole but since it's likely not difficult I might use a dollar store type poncho at the start. I'd try and position myself at the start to keep my feet dry. When I ran the OBX half in rain. My biggest issue was the amount of weight my clothes gained when they were soaked. I would try to wear the least amount of material possible.

How cold and how strong is the wind supposed to be? Are you going to run hard? Or is it more like a training run with easy paced miles?

I ran a training run last weekend in the rain (14.5 miles - 2.5 easy and 12 marathon pace). It was predicted to be upper 30s/40 degrees with rain and a little wind (10mph??). I was dreading it. Considered running inside, but decided to suck it up and run outside with the group. I did the 2.5 miles easy before the group, and it helped me get a feel for how cold it was going to be.

I wore a long sleeve tech shirt, with a very thin lightweight jacket (but it was the most water resistant one I had). Tights (I think my heavier ones, but it might have been my mid weight ones??), and then my running skirt. I wore my gloves, heavier socks and I started with a fleece ear muff. After the 2.5 miles, I decided the fleece ear muff would make me too hot, and I switched to a Bondi Band (headband) over my ears. I also wore a hat to keep the rain out of my eyes.

I pushed the sleeves of my long sleeve shirt up near the beginning of the run. Since it was a harder run, I warmed up pretty well. I was actually very comfortable during the run. I never got too cold. It was mostly a light rain, but we did get poured on a couple of times.

I generally do not like to be cold, and I usually end up over dressing. I think if the conditions are similar to mine, and you are running a harder effort, I think you should be fine!

I hope you have a good race, and don’t worry about it too much. Go out there and have fun! :)

This is reassuring! The forecast is pretty much identical to your run - low 40s, 10 mph wind and rain. I need to double check but I think there’s an indoor place to wait before the race starts so that will help!
