Mass Shooting at Pittsburgh Synagogue

And just the other day I heard on the National CBS news about a woman in China or Japan (can’t remember which) that went on a rampage with a knife injuring 14 children at a school. So, it’s not the guns doing the hurting and killing, it’s people. People.
Had she had a gun, quite possibly 14 dead students (probably more, as one does not have to be right next to a victim as with a knife), rather than 14 injured students.

Do you think an off duty police officer on the door of the synagogue would have been able to stop this guy? He injured on duty police officers who already knew he was shooting people. That’s what makes me shake my head.

They stopped him though.

Now, I’ll say that I hate the idea of having to put guards in places of worship. I also believe it’s nearly impossible to defend yourself from an ambush. But, this notion that carrying a rifle somehow makes you invincible in the face of return fire from a handgun is just plain wrong. A rifle doesn’t become an advantage AT ALL until significant distance is created between the two combatants.

Still, not the gun or the knife. People. As long as some people have no regard for human life they will find a way.
No way to refute this - those guns aren't shooting themselves. :sad1: Bigotry, hostility, suspicion of others, hate and murderous ideologies - all of these are certainly "forms" of mental illness/instability but ultimately it's man's inhumanity to man that results in individuals murdering others in cold blood. There's also no way to refute that guns are a horrifically "efficient" way to do that and had this particular monster not had an automatic weapon, it's very unlikely he would have killed all those innocent people.

Millions of people have guns in the US and never kill anyone. When there is a bombing we blame the bomber. When someone drives drunk and causes an accident we blame the driver. When there is a shooting, we blame the gun. Makes no sense. We have a people problem not a gun problem. People have owned guns for so long in the US why are shootings now only prevalent? The UK banned guns but then saw an insane rise in stabbings, now carrying a knife is banned there. If someone really wants to kill someone they will find a way to do so. I send healing prayers to everyone involved in this shooting.

This was an ambush. If there was an armed guard he would probably be among the dead because guards at places of worship don’t stand at the ready with their weapons drawn. Thank goodness the police officers were able to stop him.

I feel that the criticism by the President that there were no guards was premature. It blames the victims just hours after they were gunned down instead of denouncing the murderer.

You guys don’t get it. Popcorn has actually nothing to do with this sad event.

What is sick is there are so many shootings in the US that we have so many threads about this. What is sick is that DIS probably already 10 or 15 different threads within the past 10 years that deal with some type of mass shooting. usually the threads have the same emotional political discussions and usually have the same ending , being locked. hence the popcorn.

past 10 years? try the past year! There's been a mass shooting practically daily in the U.S., so many the news can't cover all of them. Yes, people get emotional because people are dying and we know there's a way to deal with it, but no one in our "leadership" wants to take ANY action whatsoever.

People who have this kind of hate have been emboldened by those in powerful positions. They crawl out of their hovels because now their leaders speak with hate. Leaders who do nothing to quell others' hate, but rather ignite it with rhetoric.

To deny it and not allow discussion of it at this point is to be complicit.

Everyone, everywhere, every message board, social media account, dinner table should be speaking out against this and against those who allow and encourage it to happen.

I know it was an ambush, that’s why I said what I said. My point was more about his choice of weapon & your insinuation in the other post that said choice is WHY a guard would be at a disadvantage (and my frustration with similar claims every single time a rifle is involved in a close-up shooting).

We restrict the sale of explosives components. We license drivers and cars. But any discussion of doing either with regard to guns is immediately rejected. Can't there ever be a middle ground?

The issue is that people exaggerate how easy it is to get a gun. It is not easy to purchase a firearm and it's a lengthy process. It includes many forms, a background check, you need to have references to back you up. The media wants you to believe that anyone can just walk in and buy a gun at any moment and they will just walk out with an assault rifle. I've seen the ridiculous ad were they claim it's harder to get birth control in the US then a gun. It is complete bologna. People preaching we need stricter gun laws or an entire ban. Gun laws are way stricter in the US then they have ever been but the rate of shootings is on the rise. We tighten the laws and only saw more shootings.

I think it depends what state you live in. The shooter who came to my place of work was able to get his shotgun from a gun store in less than an hour on a Friday afternoon. He had the weekend to saw it off and show up to work on Monday with it. Granted, he didn't get an automatic military style weapon.

Having bought both birth control and firearms in my lifetime, I believe that comparison. To get birth control, the last time I was on it, I had to see my primary doc to get a referral to the OB-GYN who wrote the prescription that I then had to go to a pharmacy to fill, and there were costs at all three levels. My daughters' competition gun, on the other hand? Same day process, with less paperwork than buying a new cell phone. The whole purchase took under an hour. We need to address the "people problem", as you call it, of bad actors getting their hands on guns; enough of these shooters have had things that should have raised red flags that it is clear the current process isn't sufficient.

And your statement about gun laws being stricter than they've ever been is outright false. The sunset of the assault weapons ban in 2004 was a significant loosening of gun regulation, and very little has been enacted since.

The popcorn smiley is used when someone is waiting for the "fun" to begin. It means that the poster finds the comments that are sure to follow entertaining.

10 people lost their lives today. There's nothing popcorn worthy about that or the debates that may come as a result of yet another act of terror.

All my friends and I get our birth control through an app. I never had to go to a doctor for it. Answered a few questions and had the birth control in my mailbox in about a week, so I don't see the comparison sorry. Also I guess I should have mentioned that I live in NJ with some of the strictest gun laws since we got our new governor. He is also wanting to tax tap water so that's that.

Wow, how do you do that? Never heard of the app. Where I live (Virginia) it requires a visit to the doctor.
