Not sure if anyone brought it up, or perhaps someone did and it devolved into political bickering, but I think this case goes beyond mere politics. It sounds like he was meticulous but still couldn't cover up his tracks completely. The packages were probably traced because almost everything package is photographed by USPS and those photos are stored cheaply.

Did you see his van before they covered it with a tarp? The stickers! And no one thought to keep an eye on that guy?

This guy has had arrests dating back to 1991 for grand theft, animal abandonment, felony battery, stolen motor vehicle, retail theft, threat to throw bomb, possession of controlled substance and so many more! This guy should not have even been walking around free!

It's crazy that the guy was super meticulous and yet dumb enough to try and attempt sending bombs through the USPS to highly protected targets.

Tunnel vision. All it takes is one slip up to get caught, but the perp would think that all the tracks were covered. They all came from the same place, and there was probably something even as minor-sounding as a single hair. However, I'm guessing it's that these packages all had to be brought into the counter at a post office.

I'm surprised that Van isn't totally crunched given that he can't even see out his windows.

Not much different than a commercial cargo van or delivery truck. I've seen van conversions that have appliances and furniture blocking the windows. And of course tractors either have sleeping quarters or short-haul tractors with windows will be typically blocked by the trailer.

Not so sure how meticulous he was. Just watching the news and one of the interviewee's just said that it was a good thing he was better at leaving clues than he was at making bombs. There were the same fingerprints on at least 7 of the bombs and DNA evidence. Doesn't sound very meticulous.

Since this is a political hate crime, I won't say anything else because it would most definitely be political.

I never understand people stocking stickers of anytypes on their cars.

Especially the stupid family stickers.

You mean the stick figure ones? I may have the sticker for you.

I think I'll put this on my tombstone.
Never had a bumper sticker on the car.

Fingerprints and DNA. Doesn't get any more basic than that. Since he'd been arrested and convicted before, he's obviously got fingerprints and DNA samples on file.

Meh fair enough. I was more responding to the original post, but you're right, the more I read about this guy, the less evil genius he seems.

Maybe meticulous wasn't the right word. More like focused on one thing to the detriment of avoiding detection.

I was wondering about that. The one package I saw from CNN could have been used in a USPS poster for "How to Identify Suspicious Packages!" Did no USPS employee notice, from drop-off (at a counter OR taken from a box) to being sorted to being delivered? I assume he dropped them off individually or it is even crazier that they got through all together!

ETA: The picture of the device was strange too. It was sort of posed with the envelope to CNN and a Clorox wipes container for scale. Whoever took it wasn’t too concerned about it exploding.

No idea about this guy - but at my post office there is a self serve package machine, so I could mail a package that looked like that without actually talking to a person. I'd have to stand there and push a bunch of buttons on a machine though because it's a little slow, so I'm sure there'd be lots of video evidence
