Honest opinions: Pop Century

We are DVC members so usually stay at a DVC resort. Due to bad planning on my part, I completely didn’t take into account that there is a Run Disney event during our dates and all DVC properties are booked up. I’ve set up a waitlist but not holding much hope for that so have booked a 3 night stay at Pop Century.

So, my question is will I be disappointed with Pop? I’ve stayed at Deluxe and Mods so am now worried that pop will feel a bit of a let down. Honest opinions would be appreciated.

I think it depends on how much time you want to spend around the resort. The pool and dining are not up to mod/deluxe levels. I'm pretty much only at the resort to shower and sleep and I've enjoyed all of my stays at Pop (going back in December, it'll be our first time in the renovated rooms). The buses are good, the rooms are brand new with queen beds.

we drove on the lot once to check it out and resort hop......did not get out the car.........it looked super tacky from the car, had to be much worse in person.........Motel 6 with disney / pop media characters painted on the walls does not = a nice resort.

Granted....we are DVC / deluxe hotel people.....but we have enjoyed many of the moderates.........never even thought of staying in a value for the reasons stated above.

We love Pop (and I’m deluxe all the way). I had very low expectations when I booked a last minute trip years ago and I was pleasantly surprised. We’ve stayed there a few times since and deliberately picked it for our trip next month to check out the new rooms.

Yes, the pool is basic but it still cools you off.
Yes, there’s only a food court but in our experience lines move fast enough.
Sure, there’s only buses to the parks, but since it’s queued lines, it’s quite organized.
It’s a pretty compact resort compared to the mods so I feel walking is minimal.

Just keep an open mind and it may surprise you.

I suppose the answer to that would depend on what you expect out of a hotel. You should expect it to be clean and a comfortable place to sleep. The rooms will not be as spacious as you're used to, and the amenities will be more basic. But it's onsite, with all the attendant perquisites that go with that (magical express, magic bands, 60 day FP).

It's in-your-face Disney. It's popular culture. Some people find that tacky and garish. Some people find that funky and fun. Are you able to embrace it for what it is or will you constantly be comparing it to your favorite deluxe?

The pools won't have waterslides or other features. But you'll still be able to cool off in them. Does your family need all the bells and whistles to have poolside fun or can they enjoy themselves in a typical pool? Maybe bring some pool toys with you.

Are you rope-drop play-in-the-parks-all-day kind of people who mostly use the hotel for sleep? If so, you should be fine. Are you resort-day kind of people who plan to spend a lot of time enjoying the hotel's atmosphere and amenities? If so, you might want to come up with some alternate activities like Disney Springs or a water park visit.

Pop only has buses for transportation; are you okay with that? Of course you could skip the buses entirely with a lyft/uber/minnie van, which actually might be more direct and convenient than the Disney transportation from many of the DVC resorts.

Your disappointment or enjoyment will largely be dependent upon the expectations and attitude you go into it with.

We love Pop Century! We often stay at deluxe resorts (usually with a 4-5 night stay at Pop first), on occasion even club level, and we still love Pop. It is the one resort we return to over and over.

I agree with @Moliphino about the resort itself having a very different feel from a deluxe. It doesn't have the same relaxed feel that the deluxe resorts do. The resort as whole doesn't have the "lush" feel of a deluxe; it lacks the dining options, shopping options, and lobby with inviting seating. There is no water slide at the pool/s, but they are still fun pools, and there is a pool bar that we've enjoyed. I find the Pop pools, especially the two that aren't the feature pool, more peaceful than the pools at the Poly. The food at Pop Century is quick service, but there are many more options than what's available at deluxe resorts, and if you don't like the options available, there are many more a short walk away at Art of Animation. If you're planning on spending a lot of time at your resort, Pop Century might feel like a let down after a deluxe, but you'll mostly be at the parks and plan on pool time for relaxing at the resort, you'll be fine.

The landscaping isn't elaborate, but the statues are fun. Hourglass lake is nice. The rooms facing it have, in my opinion, the best views. The buildings from the outside aren't pretty like the GF. They're basic buildings. The inside though is really nice with the renovations that have been taking place. The new rooms are quite nice. I find the beds and pillows at Pop Century more comfortable than what we've had at some deluxe resorts.

Overall, we really enjoy it and would recommend giving it a try. The buses don't share with other resorts, which is a huge plus to me. I do not agree that Pop feels like a Motel 6. I've stayed at a few of those, and Pop Century is nothing like that. In fact, my DD and I stayed at a Holiday Inn last weekend, and other than the size of the room (slightly larger than Pop Century), it didn't feel as nice to us as the Pop Century.

Please make sure you look at the renovated room pictures when making your decision. Very modern. They are so much different than the old rooms.

So my kids and I did a split day POR/POP because I couldn't get a flight until a few days after my original reservation.

I will say Pop was comfortable the food court is great lots of varieties. But it was a downgrade going from POR especially no slide at the pool etc.

But again this was us immediately leaving POR and heading to POP so that be why it was hard.

I would definitely stay there again to save money. It was clean but just no amenities.

We did POP one night when we got in early before our DVC stay. We were excited to try it out....excitement ended pretty quickly. We did not have a renovated room so that may make a difference but the beds were uncomfortable, room was small, bus stop was far away, and it just felt like a cheap motel. We did CSR this trip when we again got in a couple of days early and really enjoyed staying there. With the AP discount it wasnt much more than we had paid for POP. We'll gladly do mods again but the values aren't our cup of tea.

I'm not speaking for everyone, but I think often times, people who regularly stay Deluxe/Mod and assume the Values are just trash, will find plenty to dislike about POP and have a negative experience. Those that have a more open mind and know what to expect tend to find it quite fun. Everyone has their own opinion and hard to say what is right for someone and not right for someone else.
Is the lobby similar to GF? Ummm...no. Are there quiet relaxing areas, a great bus system, unique (even if somewhat tacky) theming, decent food court options and several busy and quiet pools? Heck yeah! (And they have tie dye cheesecake) :hippie:

I am a Deluxe girl all the way. This last trip we stayed at Animal Kingdom but due to a flight cancellation we ended up at POP for the night. I was very pleasantly surprised by the resort. My daughter loved the theme and oversized decorations. The food court ( while just a food court) has a decent amount of options. The pools were neat and my kid would have loved them.
I love the new rooms. While a little sterile by some standards they were clean, fresh and up to date. I honestly would stay here again for a short stay. The only other value I have stayed at was AOA and I would pick a POP room over a Little Mermaid one.

I have stayed at all levels ... I think it really depends on what you want out of your hotel.

What are your hopes for pools, dining, quaint & quiet spots, lush landscape, bathroom space, room space, special touches?

If your hopes are high ... yeah you might feel like you are in a cartoon route 66 motel.

Now the new rooms have queen beds, larger televisions, decent showers, beverage centers and more storage & plugs than most values/moderates ................. but I don't feel that Disney touch or warmth in the rooms.

If you want it to feel a touch nicer ask for a lake view room, nicer than many moderate room views.

:hippie:

NOTE: 30-35+ stays at POP, 4-5 in renovated rooms. My favorite area is 50's, but I'd be fine with 60's (standard, not pool view). I don't ask for 70's anymore since there are odds of a busier area and I hate 80's and 90's.

We just stayed there for the first time a few weeks ago. We loved it. Our previous stays were AoA family suites, and then DH & I did a split stay with AKL/Contemporary, so this was our first "true" value room. The renovated rooms are really nice. With the extra bed put up, the room was plenty spacious. The pool is nothing special but we had a blast in it; any pool is cool when it's 90*. We liked it so much DH & I are planning a couples trip in November!!

Don't get me wrong, I loved AKL and Contemporary and I oh so desperately wanted to stay in an Epcot area resort for this trip, but we wouldn't be going at all if we had to pay those prices. A 7 day trip at a Value beats a 0 day trip at a Deluxe any day for us. :D

So, my question is will I be disappointed with Pop? I’ve stayed at Deluxe and Mods so am now worried that pop will feel a bit of a let down. Honest opinions would be appreciated.

I have no idea.
If you go into it feeling worried you'll be let down, you probably will be. Would you rather change dates and stay where you really want to be? I don't think anyone should talk you into a resort that you don't want to stay in. It's your money, your vacation.

Agreed. They will tee it up as an obvious downgrade, which it is, but it is not like you will be staying in a slum with worries for your safety. For what it is, it is fine. Used to the deluxes and expect deluxe amenities and accommodations? Yup, you won't like Pop. Need a clean place to stay with access to pools, some quirky theming, and a good bus system, while saving a significant amount of money? Pop might just be up your alley.

We are DVC member, too. We REALLY like Pop. The rooms are fine, just not as much soundproofing as there is at a deluxe. The food court is really good. If you’d like a visual treat, walk across the bridge to AoA and check out that resort. The theming is stunning. Their food court has some very good selections, also.
