Brief thoughts from 1st Trip

As WDW veterans, we came away very impressed with both parks. In many ways, we prefer the Disneyland experience. Kids had an absolute blast and are begging to go back.

We stayed at the Disneyland Hotel and it was amazing. Sort of felt like a hybrid between the Contemporary and Polynesian Resorts with a much more interesting history and better rooms. Did the Trader Sams thing and the experience is similar, but the bar is larger and a lot more friendly for walk-ins. Never had a bad meal/snack at Tangaroa Terrace. I think the food may be a bit better here than Capt Cook's - but it's close.

Big conventions going on during our stay, so lots of suits. Not a negative really, just not many families around with young kids. A difference I noticed from our stays at WDW.

It felt like all the best parts of the 4 WDW parks were basically crammed into 2. Just knowing your walking in Walt's footsteps was a pretty big part of the fun for me.

It never rained but couldn't help but wonder how Cali people deal with rain and all the open queues.

We were in several attraction lines where line position holders would have the rest of their group join them right before hitting the last segment of the queue. Peter Pan was the absolute worst. It turned what should have been a 20 minute wait into a 45. The folks doing this had it down to a science. Not saying its wrong or right, but it makes the lines and expected waits a bit deceiving.

It was a lot of walking. I wish there was a trolley or something running from the Disneyland hotel to the main gate. Getting from park to hotel was still much faster than hopping a bus at WDW, but more walking involved. May consider GCH next time to put us closer, even though we really like the DLH.

The "bubble" was different, but certainly still there when staying on site. Getting from LAX to the hotel is not quite as nice a drive as MCO to WDW. My GPS was a bit confused and I was a little concerned about taking a wrong turn into the wrong neighborhood. Now that I know how to get there it should help for next time. May look into the Disney branded shuttle for next trip.

3 days is not enough with a 5 and 8 year old.

Happy to see you enjoyed your stay! Yes, the Grand is nice. We have stayed at the DLH and the Grand. Each has it's perks. No. three days is not enough :cool1:

Haven't you heard? It never rains in southern California. ;)

Did you get much photography time?

Glad you had a great trip. We were WDW regulars until 2013 and have been DLR regulars since then.

I just re-read my post and hope I don't come across at all negative. It was a truly awesome trip.

I took only my RX1RII point and shoot and basically shot on the run with one hand. Got lots of great snapshots. :) Next time I'll probably take a tripod and spend some time in the parks at night. The girls were so exhausted each evening, we didn't get to see WOC or Fantasmic. The only time we were in DL past dark was Sunday, as the girls did Bibbidi Bobbidi at 5pm.

It's funny that you say that - I notice that your avatar is from Boardwalk Inn - that's our favorite place to stay at WDW and on both our stays, there were conventions and Boardwalk and the surrounding restaurants were filled with suits. LOL

Aww, love to read positive trip reports! But yeah, your BWI pool pic terrifies me!:scared1::rotfl:

Like the comparison, glad y'all liked it!

We don't. We melt in the rain. Those poncho & umbrella people? Not Californians ;)

It's wrong. You may say it. Can anything done about it? In some lines you can refuse to let people pass but when they cut into and not through the line they know odds are nobody wants to create a scene yelling at them & risk being pulled out by security.

Yes it is & people underestimate that part. OMG I wish their was a shuttle from DLH to the front gates!

Uber or shuttle next time. There are recommendations for what to do if have/need car seats around here... No it isn't :D

The technical line cutting thing bothers us a lot too (yes, it's cutting - something we learned in Kindergarten) but Disney seems to promote this kind of negative behavior and it has been yet another factor that has kept us away from the parks for the last couple of years.
Maybe this isn't a popular position, especially to those who use these methods but that's the it impacts us.

Uber to the hotel.

Love your positive report!

I was thinking the other night how all of our kids therapists and teachers focus on turn taking. Did all the grown ups forget? People are always running red lights, cutting in line, etc.

Glad to hear you had a great trip! It's interesting to hear what you said about the distance from the DLH to the gates. One of the things that gets repeated often here is the odd truth that staying on site can actually be farther away from the gates distance-wise than some of the off site hotels. This thread has some great info for your next trip about DLR hotels and the DLR hotel mindset (which is very different from the WDW hotel mindset): https://www.disboards.com/threads/choosing-the-right-dlr-area-hotel-for-you.3656512/. If proximity to the gates ever takes priority over being on site, the Best Western Park Place Inn is probably the closest (5 minutes?) to the gates of all the hotels around. Cross at the crosswalk, go through bag check, go right or left -- pick your park, ta da! On the other hand, the GCH has its charms, too. :)

I have no problem saying it is wrong. Lines shouldn't double in wait time because people are cutting the lines. I really wish something would be done to prevent this.

Glad you enjoyed your visit. I hope you didn't miss out on too much by closures.

Glad you had a great visit. We did our first WDW trip in December of 2015 and absolutely loved it. Both resorts have similarities but really are quite different. We are planning our next WDW trip that will actually have more down time than park time-so much more to see and do resort-wide there.
