Official Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend - The Dark Side 2017

So what's in a Viking Coffee????

Coffee with equal parts Bailey's Irish Cream and Kamora Liqueur. Typically 1 or 1.5 oz of each for 1 cup of coffee.

Don't forget to get it with mocha. Yum.

Mmm... Viking coffee. The coffee machines were down when I was there for Princess in Feb. I was so sad.

That would make me sad. I have dreams of Viking coffee. When I ran lightside I didn't even care about going in the parks after. When I said I was going to do darkside people asked if I would be going in the parks, my response....of coarse must get my Viking coffee.

The reasoning behind the long run extending by 1.5 miles every two weeks is that it allows you to build up your endurance beyond what you previously ran while also helping minimize injury risk. The shorter runs during the week are "maintenance" runs. They allow you to keep maintain your most recent long distance.

So while it may be possible to cap at 6 miles and still finish on race day, that may not equate to a more enjoyable experience come race day itself. You will be much better prepared and probably enjoy race day substantially more if you have run closer to the actual race distance in the weeks leading up to race day. In 2011 and 2012, I slacked off on the weekend runs for about 6 weeks. In order to get the distance in, I had to cut the short weekend runs out altogether and increase each long run by 1.5 miles every week to get the long runs in a still have a taper period. This worked, though I enjoy running a lot more if I have a "short" run built in.

If you were to run long runs of 7.5 miles on the 18th, 9 miles on the 25th, 10.5 miles on the 1st, and 12 miles on the 9th, you would be right on target for 13.1 miles come race day. While this may not be ideal, it's probably a better option than sticking with 6 miles and hoping it's good enough. In my experience, at least part of the benefit from the long runs is learning to push through when you're tired and being better prepared for the distance itself.

Again, each runner is different so what I outlined may not work for another, but I firmly believe that you will feel much better about successfully finishing if you have already come at least close to the required distance and will probably enjoy the whole experience more if you are better prepared.

Totally agree. However, I would not go to 12 here, myself. Upping mileage every week and that close to race day creates more opportunity for injury. Particularly for anyone who is doing their first half and is not familiar with training to this extent. I know some people prefer going to 12 or 13 miles, but I have not found any difference between that and 10 ish miles. This close I think I would play it safe and stretch the build up out more, maybe just doing 7-8-9-10 or 7.5-8.5-9.5-10.5. Or, at least feel it out and not push.

Wild thought... Pandora is finished.... what IF we get to run through Pandora.

Eep. :earseek: This would be amazing!

Finally was able to book our first day of fastpasses this morning! I still got everything at the times I waned, so that worked out perfectly. Question though - for the Biergarten in Germany, can you just have a beer or do you need to do the whole buffet? Also, if you are just stopping for a drink, do you need reservations or not?

To claify, "Biergarten" itself is a restaurant so yes you would have to do the buffet to enter that area. But! the courtyard is styled after a German biergarten and has 2-3 beer stands. So you can get a beer at those, or a bier, if you'd like :drinking1 if they open them that time or morning, that is. Not sure how they handle it because the half courses do not usually go that way through the showcase. Here is to hoping!!

Ok. Next and even more important question: which park and where in said park does one find this awesome sounding Viking coffee????

Okay, where does one get this Viking Coffee? Is it in Norway at Epcot? It sounds amazing.

Haha, I posted the same question before I saw this!
At Epcot in Norway at the Kringla bakery. https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/dining/epcot/kringla-bakeri-og-kafe/

If the course went by there would the stands be open since WS doesn't open till 11? Because I love the idea of stopping for a beer!

Highly unlikely. The tail end of the runners will be finishing around 930, well before the beer stands are open. That said, there is a beer truck in the parking lot after the finish.

Park hour planning post:

A second showing of ROL has been added for the days leading up to the race. Thursday through Saturday will now have shows at 8:30 and 9:45. As of this morning, Monday through Wednesday (my last day so I didn't check further) have also added an hour at the end of each AK day, so I'd expect they will add additional shows on those nights as well.

That's kind of what I figured. I can't remember them being open after any of my other races. For some reason I never remember to hit the beer or champagne stands at the end. I guess I just hold out for the Lapu Lapu!

4 Weeks till the Expo!!

When does everyone plan on going? We plan on Thursday afternoon, thinking 2:30. Merchandise isn't a priority & would rather not deal with looooong lines. Hoping maybe some characters are out/setup, but not sure how my waiting game will be then if lines are long. Vendor booths are always enjoyable although I haven't bought anything at them ever.

Yay!! I fly in Thursday morning, so I will probably get to the expo early afternoon. Hoping to avoid crazy crowds, too. I'm getting excited! Can't wait to see the course. I really enjoyed this race weekend last year, so I'm hoping it's just as good this year!

We'll probably be there at opening. Mostly because I like to have it done and out of the way, but I hate the craziness. Since my car has officially died and needs a new engine I doubt I will be buying much.

My flight arrives Friday morning, so I will go straight from the airport and get to the Expo late Friday morning. Last year, I did the same, and the bib pickup area was empty. The Expo was moderately busy, but definitely not crowded. I don't really buy stuff (except maybe a couple of small things to bring home to the kiddos).

We fly in late Wednesday night (like 11:30pm late) and are staying at the airport hotel on points. To avoid a lot of travel time, I found a decent deal on a car for a few hours through Alamo. Going to pick up the car Thursday AM, head to the expo at open, maybe make a Target run, then head over to Boardwalk, where we're staying. Alamo can be returned at Swan/Dolphin, so once we drop our bags, we'll return the car and just have to walk back over to the hotel. Like @lovingeire, I like to have it done and out of the way so I would rather deal with any sort of crowd at open then have to go later in the day when I could be doing more fun things, lol.

We will probably go Thursday morning, like others, to get it out of the way. DH will be more willing to get there at opening since we have a car. If there's a line to wait in, I'll buy him a beer and he will be one happy camper. Our goal is to get out of there and head for an early lunch at Flower and Garden.

We (Significant Other and I) fly in Thursday morning also. But we'll go over, take our time, wait, chat, wait some more...:rolleyes1Then we'll head back to hotel and split up. He'll head to AK and I'll wait for DS and his GF to arrive and head back over to retrieve his bib(s) in the late afternoon. :darth::chewy:

I'm getting in Wednesday afternoon. I was planning on seeing the fireworks at MK since I've never seen them and won't have children and strollers to keep track or and lug around. I was planning on staying the extra hours and being there until midnight but now extended hours are until 2am so I may try and get as much of MK in as I can that night. Depending on when I wake up the next day will determine how soon I get to the expo. Nothing planned until late afternoon early evening Thursday; ROL at AK, I am determined to see all night shows this trip. Hopefully later start at expo I can still get pins and race jacket. Still trying to decide do I preorder dooneys or wait. I know third world problems.

How late is the Expo usually open on Thursday night and/or how early does it open on Friday? We don't get in until 5:30pm on Thursday night, so wouldn't expect to be on Disney property until 7ish (baggage claim, car rental, etc). Otherwise, I'll try to hit the Expo Friday morning. I don't plan on buying much, except for an optimistic "I did It!" Shirt :)
