I know Guest Services are hit and miss in how they react to issues. But they were great the one time we were next door to someone who was smoking on their verandah. I tried to be pleasant about it (I could see him hanging over the rail smoking) and casually asked him if he was aware smoking wasn't permitted on the verandahs anymore (even though it had been a few years that rule had been in place). He started ranting and raving like a lunatic (I later learned he ranted and raved like that all the time especially with his family - really feared for his kids) so I called Guest Services. I heard his phone ring just after I hung up with Guest Services (believe he was arrogant enough to say he had been smoking and would continue to do as he pleased - he wasn't exactly quiet and the walls weren't exactly thick). Later, my stateroom host thanked us for calling in and reporting him (I wouldn't expect the stateroom host to address it because it jeopardizes their tip but could tell the host was not a fan of this man either.) The host said Guest Services had called and told him it wasn't permitted and that he would be charged a $250 cleaning fee and if it happened again where the room had to be deep cleaned again, there would be another fee. It was a two week cruise so Guest Services did call back 3-4 days later to see if we had any other issues with smoking.

I am pleased to hear that Guest Services replied so quickly to your issue. That's great customer service!

I asked them not to do it, the guy told me to go F myself he paid for his cruise. After my wife kept me from climbing over the divider we called housekeeping. Then housekeeping spoke to them like three times and they just kept doing it. It finally stopped when someone higher up the chain came banging on their door and threatened to charge them some cleaning fee if they didn't stop.

People just don't care anymore. I travel a lot for work and it seems at least half the time the person in the room next to me is smoking in their room and I have to call the front desk.

This is the one and only reason we have stopped getting rooms with a veranda. It ruins the veranda. We had it happen too many times, I got tired of complaining. I don't want to spend an expensive vacation complaining to DCL about other guests. Problem solved with no veranda. It's time DCL went smoke-free.

Happened every night on our 7 night cruise (and I could only enjoy my verandah early morning as there was always cig smoke in evenings). Bummed out as I complained but who was I complaining about? We never saw who did it so we couldnt say deck X room X. We did see a cigarette get "put out" in the ocean at night though as we saw it glowing on its way down. Just because I spent a lot of money on my disney cruise doesnt give me the right to do whatever the heck I want just like the person who felt it was ok to smoke because of what they spent on the cruise. At least Disney does provide smoking sections even though it may not be as convenient as your balcony.

Some (some) smokers sure seem to get hyper-defensive when called out for smoking where they know they shouldn't. It's a dick move to willfully ignore the rules in the first place. It's even worse to get aggressively indignant about it when caught.

Though I'm not sure which line he can switch to for veranda smoking as the seeming last holdout Holland America just eliminated smoking on their verandas effective 1/2/2017. Never thought I'd see the day...they probably got tired of being referred to as Ashtray of the Seas.

My larger point, though, was wondering what kind of self-involved world must that guy live in whereby he thinks he is at liberty to ignore the cruise line's rules just because he "paid for his cruise". People like that make me feel stabby.

We just got back yesterday from our 5th Concierge cruise. On Day 1 while still in Port we were sitting on the veranda reading the Navigator. Wait...what's that smell? On the veranda next to us there were multiple smokers! I nicely told them that smoking was not allowed on the veranda. No reply just continued to smoke. Now I'm ticked so I found the SR Host and He told them not to smoke and showed them the smoking area 1 flight up. Settled back on the veranda and I hear a voice loudly calling me a "B". I rarely get upset and tried to ignore it but DH is a retired Marine and he was not happy. Next step was to talk to Concierge Host. He talked to the smokers and we didn't have an issue after that. I felt badly for the child that was with them. I agree we all paid for our right to enjoy a nice vacation but the rule is there for a reason!

Just got off the Wonder Thursday, had gone to Guest Services for cash on Tuesday and noticed they had a list of "smoking" staterooms on the desk and were entering on the computer when I arrived. Maybe at least those people can get the message.

From what clten said it sounds like they cleaned that room right away, and told him if they had to do another deep clean they would be charged again. Its not just $250 at the end of the cruise... it adds up quickly if thats true!

Yes, that would be. My experience was that the offenders did not stop, so I felt like it was a one time charge. Maybe they were unpleasantly surprised on the last evening when they got their bill, but I can also imagine a angry cruiser at GS, could manage to get any subsequent charges removed.

To your point, though, an extra $250-$500 ain't nothing but a thing to many DCL cruisers. Or suppose you get some lunatic who digs in their heels and keeps doing it, cleaning fees be damned, because they are certain they can piss and moan and get (most of) the charges removed at the end of the cruise.

At what point does (or should) DCL offer some sort of concession to the guests/staterooms impacted by the smoking? What should those concessions be? Free Palo/Remy? Extra OBC? Move them to a different location in a stateroom of the same category or higher? Refund a portion of their fare attributable to the balcony? Offer a hefty discount on a future cruise?

Yes, but my fear would be that concession might be something minor and then I would have to be that angry cruiser at GS demanding something better. Not my idea of vacation.
