The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: Did you receive any cool running or Disney related gift that you would like to tell us about?
I received the book 50 Years In the Mouse House: The Lost Memoir of One of Disney's Nine Old Men by Eric Larson. He was the animator of Peg from Lady and the Tramp and directed the Once Upon a Dream sequence where Briar Rose meets Prince Phillip in the forest from Sleeping Beauty. Other Disney related included some Star Wars items including the Forest Moon of Endor/Haunted Mansion, mashup shirt, K-2SO water bottle, and my sister gave me a plush Pluto with a candy cane in his mouth from the Disney Store.

ATTQOTD: The Fenix 3 HR I got a while back was for anniversary (Nov) and Christmas. My mom got me a new pair of running gloves. My MIL got me a fishing shirt (I went deep sea fishing once this summer while down in FL visiting, so I guess that makes me an angler). It's made like running shirts, and the material feels the same. So, it's going in the running collection.

I keep meaning to get involved in this thread, and then I just don't ... but I like presents, so today seems like as good a day as any to answer the QOTD.

ATTQOTD: No running stuff, but I got a book of Poster Art of the Disney Parks (I knew I was getting it since I was there when my dad bought it, but it's still super exciting).
I also got a keychain from Disneyland, but that wasn't holiday-related, it was just because my aunt gets me keychains everywhere she goes (I collect keychains ... I've got about 600, including around 50 Disney keychains).

@LSUlakes, sorry to hear about your illness, but hopefully you're on the right path and will take 2017 with a vengeance!

ATTQOTD: Got an amazing Christmas present - not running specific per se, but will have a definite impact on running.

Disney related: got the little guy a storm trooper mask and my husband a Darth Vader mask. They keep teaming up to put "Rey" (i.e. me) in jail!

Hi Sarah and welcome to the thread! I remember you from both my old journal and yours. Hope all is well and things are going well for you!

ATTQOTD: I think the thing I was most excited about was a hydration backpack for running and disney days. It has enough pockets for everything I could ever want to bring to the parks.

I got a Disney backpack before our last trip that can also be used as a hydration system as well. Still excited about it! Here is what it looks like. The down side to all those pockets is it takes forever to get through the checkpoint, but worth it.

QOTD: Do you have or had a piece of running gear (could be shoes, clothes, hydration system, lights, fuel, ect.) that you heard great things about and tried out, only to find that it simply just did not work for you?

ATTQOTD: I was having some pain in my feet and people kept telling me to try a pair of HOKAS, so I did. For a short time they felt fine, but they just didnt work out for me. I only got about a third of the mileage I normally do out of shoes and I think they ended up causing more problems than they solved.

Side Note: Today we have our first ultrasound and DW is extra nervous. If yall could say a little prayer for us I would appreciate it.

Yes! The quick release mount & strap for the Garmin 910. Everyone raved about how easy it was to use on a bike and then on a run, but they never bothered to tell you how much thickness the mount adds to the wristband and watch. I felt like I was using my old 305. The mount went into a drawer never to be seen again.

Same here...I got the quick release for the 920 and used it on my bike exactly once, and NEVER on the wrist. It was horrible.

Nothing for me, but I gave my mom the NewBalance Run Disney Little Mermaid shoes that I bought for her at the Wine & Dine expo. She loved them!

A fuel belt. I discovered that I much prefer holding a bigger, heavier handheld bottle than having a fuel belt around my waist.

ATYQOTD: I got some tri stuff, since I'm getting into that next year! Nice goggles and jammers, and DW got me a Road ID, which she says is more for her than for me. :) We got Disney gift cards specifically for the expo next week from my sister's family. I got DW a FR 235 and that really cute "Meet Me at the Finish Line" Lady and the Tramp runDisney shirt. So us.

ATTQOTD: Altras. The zero drop transition started out well, but the overall experiment didn't work out for me at all. I REALLY wanted to believe in them, as I think the concept is sound, but alas not for me. I'm happily an Adidas boost guy now. (I think if we started out in zero drop shoes from around age 2, it might have huge benefits in the long term.)

>>> The weather forecasts from Weather Channel and Accuweather for WDW weekend are (as a runner might describe them) wildly off from one another. Weather.com has what could be considered a near nightmare scenario. The Accuweather forecast approaches ideal conditions for attempting that time goal during the big one. Thoughts?

I think it's way too early to start watching & stressing over the weather.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

ATTQOTD: Thankfully, I haven't really encountered anything that didn't work at all for me, but there have been a few things that didn't work as well for me as they do for others.
One big one is that I can't use Sport Beans as a mid-run fuel (which surprised me at first, because I actually had previously been (and still am, actually) using regular jelly beans as a running fuel). I do often eat them on my way home after a long run, so they're not a total failure, but I just can't tolerate them mid-run.

@LSUlakes, I hope all goes well with the ultrasound. I will keep you guys in my thoughts and prayers today!

This weekend we have the following folks with races:

31 - @GreatLakes - Great New Years Eve Race (NG / N/A)
31 - @michigandergirl - Wolverine Resolution Run 4 Mi (NG / N/A)
31 - @Flossbolna - Nuremberg New Years Eve Run 5k (Nürnberger Silvesterlauf 5km) (35:00 / N/A)

January 2017
01 - @dmross - Ring In Races (NG / N/A)
01 - @Anisum - One-One Run (36:00 / NA)

If you would like to revise your goal or have any changes for your race this weekend, just let me know and I will make the changes. Best of luck to each of you!

Also, this will be the last post for race weekends in this thread since the new year is approaching. I hope to have the new thread started on 1/2 or 1/3 depending on how work is going. All races from January 2017 plus those that others have already let me know about will appear on the OP of the new running thread at that time. If all goes well, the second post on the new thread will link all the new QOTD's as a helpful guide for anyone wanting to go back to a certain topic of for any lurkers or new forum members to access info... At least thats the thought for now.
