Official inaugural Tower of Terror 10 miler thread. September 29, 2012

Frank, we are on the same page regarding so many issues, see my bolding. Heck, I'd race even if there was no medal. I just wish I was faster and able to race with you but at 62 and a worn out body that could never happen, unless you run backwards. :rotfl:

Hey, I just want to be still at it at 62 so no matter the pace keep it up.

OK, we've all aired our opinions on the race, but I want to know seriously,

Who is planning to do this race again next year?

Personally, I really really want to do this again, and I'm afraid I'm the only one :lmao:

I'm going to wait to see what they do with the course before signing up for next year. The heat and humidity were the worst part for me - I still feel terrible and this is the 4th day after the race. I ended up sick at the party and spent my quality time at the Medical stop there. :rotfl2:

As far as things Disney CAN control (since they can't control the weather), I'm hoping that the future course will contain more parks or at least more characters and things to see along the route during the boring "road only" parts. We know they can do better because they have done better on other races.

I'm hoping that they will fix the bigger issues with this race like they did after the inaugural Wine & Dine, and it will be a more enjoyable event in the future - right now, I'm not sure I would do it again if it didn't change. I hope it does change, since I'm addicted to RunDisney races! :)

Althought there were a few things about the race I didnt like. I was glad I made the trip for it. I love the medal and running in the TOT was the best excuse to leave work, have G-ma watch my DD and for me to enjoy some adult time at the Food and Wine, even if it was solo. The heat was brutal but I dont blame that part on Disney. I do not think I will do this one again, not for any other reason other than my favorite run is the Wine and Dine so I will be going back to that one next year. :thumbsup2

Oh, and what's with Stich all over the official race merch? Was he ever mentioned as the 'character' for this race? He's not anywhere associated with ToT, and I didn't see him anywhere on the course. :confused3

WIsh he would have been dressed up like a ToT Bellhop like the shirts!

Years ago, there was merchandise with Stitch as the Bellhop. When I saw the pin, I was hoping he would be on the course "somewhere". I was pretty frustrated when I saw him with the Hawaiian Lei, that he would be wearing when I saw him at O'hana a few days later.

I just got back home last night. I am thankful I did a bunch of training outside this summer, even at 6:00am when it was still humid and hot. I was dressed as the Witch Dr and opted for running shorts instead of the capris, which was a good choice! The "coat" I made out of a moisture wick Under Armor polo only last until Mile 1, then I carried it the rest of the way. I put it back on when I hit HS and was dying, but wanted the photo with me wearing it. I wore the top hat and the cumber-bun the whole way. It was HOT, but the bondi band underneath the hat, kept all of the sweat out of my eyes.

I also was disappointed with the lack of what I call "real" villains. I only stopped for the Witch Dr and a potty break due to the amount of liquids I keep taking in on the course. I have decided next race I need bottoms without the drawstring. It was a HUGE hassle to try to get under the cumber-bun and under the spibelt to untie (and retie) the shorts!!:rolleyes1

I was slower than I had hoped, but since the humidity was so high and I had foot issues flair up (as I expected they would), so I'm not surprised. I did a have PR for the 5k part, having saved a little time off the Royal Family 5k in Feb. My 10k time was much slower than it was in July, but by that time, I had realized that there weren't that many characters and it was so hot, my goal was to finish any way I could. During the WWOS section I did a lot of walking, with very small jogging bursts. Once back on the road again, I found the foot issues didn't hurt as bad when I was jogging, so I really pushed myself to jog as much as I could.

My apologies if I was one of the ones who stopped suddenly! I did try to raise a hand to signal, but it always didn't happen.

My other issue which I think had an impact on my time was I didn't check my earphones until I got to the Corral. I was supposed to be testing out a Beta type one ear for a company, but they didn't get it to me in time. I had grabbed another style from them, but at the last minute decided to go with the ones I used in the 5k, since I knew they worked. It turned out, I must have shorted them out in Feb. The volume was no higher than about a 1!:scared1: I could just barely hear the music & Jeff telling me when to run/walk. Since there was little music on the course, it was a L-O-N-G lonely run at times, since I was there by myself.:sad1:

My DD and her BFF said that none of the CM's knew where the characters were and they didn't have maps to help either. They ended up scouting them out. They Gaston was there, hidden in the back alone and called them over. They had a fun time talking with him. (in character of course)

After I limped my way down to the bag check, I saw a bunch of guys with clipboards, so I went over and asked what they were doing. He said they were analyzing if "this" (bag pickup) worked. I told him it did not. He said from a logistics for them it was working, since they could get everything there easily, but I told him it was not ok with the runners to have to walk across the park, down the stairs and back up again. I also told him my opinions of the race in general. I don't know if he'll report it back, but I felt a little better...until another CM snapped at me for trying to put my checked bag down so I could grab my recovery shake from it. I went off on her and told her it had been over 45 mins since I finished and I needed it NOW! I had stopped at the mats on the floor and wasn't even sitting on them. She told me to go the bleachers. I wasn't too happy about that process. The girls were wonderful, having made it to see me finish, then they took off to get my a cup of ice and a cup of ice water for the recover shake. When I finally made it to them (before bag pick up), I had ice to pour the bottle of warm water over. By the time I made it to bag pickup to pour the water into my water bottle, the ice had melted. :sad2:

I've signed up for the Princess and look forward to it. I probably won't do this again because of my disappointment and also because my goal is Coast to Coast after the Princess.

Yup! I had a purple tutu and headband. Hubs had a bright sky blue tech tee on. :):goodvibes I'm sorry for any fighting or cursing you may have witnessed. He was really really pissed off :-(

I was just damn proud of myself for being able to walk virtually the whole way with just 2 miles of jogging and cross that finish. I never would have expected that, and frankly if they had a med tent at the 5K mark I would have stopped there.

We are almost definitely doing the Princess this year. :goodvibes:goodvibes

Cool!! I could tell your hubby was hurting. I almost stopped and asked if y'all were ok but I knew with all the medics around and other bikes there was nothing I could help you with that they couldn't.

It sounds like I may be in the minority as I loved racing at night, and the course wasn't so bad. I do agree that I expected many more characters than what was actually there though. However, I loved running on the dirt road and through WWoS...to me that helped a lot as it was something different than the normal highway. After hearing how hard of a time everyone else had with the humidity, I'm really surprised that the DH and I did as well as we did. Our time was 2:34, which was only 4 minutes slower than my really wishful goal of 2:30. I think we would've been able to actually beat the 2:30 if we hadn't gotten so slowed down at the water stops and if we'd been able to run on the dirt road--everyone in front of us was walking which was understandable. I too think that Disney will more than likely improve on things for next year. The one thing that I was most disappointed in was the after party. I've never seen a park so crowded. And to know that non-runners could get fastpasses and the runners couldn't was very disappointing. I certainly hope that they improve on this one area, especially as it sounds like my hubby and I aren't the only ones who didn't get to enjoy it.

And by the way, if I upset anyone by stopping in front of them for my walk breaks, I apologize. I tried to be very concious of looking around and behind me before I slowed down. I also tried to stay to either side of the road, as that's what we were instructed to do at the start, but that didn't always work.

On the ME back to the airport now....we had such a fun trip though I did not handle this heat well at all...I'm from the same sort of climate so I'm not sure what was going on with my body this week, but it was weird. Pretty sure we won't be back for this race anytime soon...it was just too disappointing. I'm sure it will improve in the next couple of year's, and if so, we may consider it if it works into plans for when we'd like to schedule a trip out. Up next is to rest the rest of this week, then start up a training plan for Tinker Bell and Princess halves...BF is jumping into training for his full in Jan. and will run Princess with me in Feb. Hope to see some of you at Tink & Princess!!!

I had considered doing this race but it sold out who while I was still thinking about it. I am doing the WnD half next month instead.
Despite the reviews here, I would like to do the ToT next year since I like to do at least one Disney run each year. Did they give a date for the 2013 ToT? I booked a bounceback when I was there last month and my dates are 9/22-9/29.

Thanks!:goodvibes

The program guide says September 27-28, 2013. Just a thought I had, the year may play into it, 2013.
I didn't see the Big Bad Wolf and Stitch was hidden in the corner under a tree. I, too, wish there were more characters and music.

Here is photo from the course. I'm in purple.

I guess I don't have a lot to add--looks like it's mostly been said by now, but....I know this was the first of this race, but it wasn't Disney's first race. Seems like they always tank the Inaugural ones--for $100 a pop, I'm expecting them to have it figured out by now. When you know there can't be spectators on the course, you need to add entertainment. Course was insanely boring. Why was Brightroom not at all the characters--little run-able cameras take crap pics in the dark. Water and potty stops were great. No character at the finish?? Couldn't round up a bellhop or two?? When did Stitch become the freakin race mascot--no cool villains like in the pre-race website art. And if he was going to be on all the merch, couldn't he dress up on the course?? Sheesh. Reunion process looked awful--lucky my DH brought my stuff. Party was ridiculous, though--average pace folks like me weren't finished and changed until midnight to 1:00, and then ride lines were 20-30 minutes!!! That's NUTS for a $44 ticket. We only managed 3 rides and 3 characters. Cast members had no idea where characters were, either--sent us all the way across the park and back for Maleficent, then had a FORTY minute wait. Nice. Would I do it again? Not sure. LOVE the night racing, but overall--not sure.

My daughter did the kids race in the a.m. She did the 200m, I thought it was pretty silly to corral all the kids and have the 1 mile race first:confused3 they should have had the shorter races with all the wee ones first. It was stankin' hot!!! She still enjoyed herself

I agree with pretty much everything people have said about this race but I still had a good time. My choice of costume was not conducive to the heat :scared: I decided just to take it slow and enjoy what few characters they had along the way. My reward for my poorly thought out costume came after the race when I went to ride ToT, all of the CM's kept telling me I was late for my shift. My hubby and I got off the ride and the CM pulled us aside and asked how many were in our party and told us to wait. He directed us to the employee elevator all sinister like and told me that he heard all about me. I thought it was creepy cool to be in this modern elevator in the ToT. He took us back up and let us ride again but this time in the front. I felt extra special and this made wearing that terribly hot unbreathable polyester costume all worth it, LOL here are a few pics :)

This is going to sound weird, but I am pretty sure I was in the bathroom with you guys at All Star Music. The main bathroom was closed and they made us go all the way back to the pool to use the bathroom before getting on the bus. I was in a Sea Witch shirt with black knee high compression socks and a "Powered by Pixie Dust" bondiband.

Your outfit is beautiful! Wonderful detail - although I have no idea how you ran in that given the humidity.

See - this is what I mean, this race has so much creative potential - from Disney and from those running it. Disney needs to collectively rework the concept.

So ticked I didn't get to see Cruella. What the heck! What others have said is right...we needed a map/schedule to the villians at Hollywood Studios.

Oh - did anyone see the guy who was dressed with a metal (I think it was metal) version of the buildings of the ToT? It was fitted across his shoulders and upper chest. I wish I had taken a picture of it. Have no idea how he ran in that as well.

I saw him! I kept thinking the same thing...how is he gonna run in that!

Gah! I was agreeing with all the ladies about the tech shirts in the running bags being cut for men, too large, etc. but never really looked at mine until I just took it out of the wash from vacation laundry. I got a large because I'm pretty busty but I could fit two of me in it! I really could kick myself for not looking at it and trading sizes. Thank goodness I bought a women's tech shirt at the expo because I won't be wearing the official ToT one. I was hoping to wear it for trick-or-treating too. Bummer.

So agree! Great costume Piraterunner!! So creative and it definitely looked like it was warm and yes, Disney is great for encouraging dressing up. I feel funny wearing a running skirt at most other races unless they are themed or ladies focused. So, it is fun to see what people will try and I think everyone who wore a costume should have gotten some extra recognition because it was so hot and humid! Maybe in the future. I didn't see that guy, but I am hope Disney puts some pictures up of those!

As far as the shirts, even the XS is large on me. I guess it is just the Champion brand. Many other races use different brands that seem to fit a lot better and look so much more flattering.

This race was fun and well organized for the most part, and the transportation worked surprisingly well, but with the heat, humidity and witnessing so many runners dealing with heat illness, I don't know if I would do this race again. I know Disney has no control over the weather, but they should have planned for the race conditions a bit better so that so many people weren't getting sick. RNR did that for the Chicago race and I was impressed by all the precautions they took. Didn't see anyone get sick during that or afterwards. They should have had cooling stations at the very least. I do love that medal though...

I asked the guy with the Tower logo on his shoulders if I could take his pic! He stopped for the hyena pic right behind me! Can't post it from my mobile, but it was cool. There was a guy at the 5K in a full elevator costume, but he seemed really shy when I asked him about it, so I didn't want to put him in the spot by asking for a pic.

I think part of the reason I was underwhelmed with the course was that I had run the 5k and 1 miles that morning on much of that same WWoS terrain, including pirate and gravedigger photos. Although the gravediggers were definitely cool enough to be in both places!

I don't think it's weird, actually kind of funny. That was us, using the pool bathrooms. I was so close to a fellow Diser and didn't even know it.

I would love to somehow see that picture. There has to be a way to get it somehow posted here.

Create a mobile email that includes the picture, open the email then right click copy to laptop pictures , then post here?? Would that work? Or is there a faster way?
