Swine flu

To put the current 'Swine Flu' into context:

Here are the figures for pediactric death caused by all types of Flu in the US for the past few years:

2005-6 46

2006-7 78

2007-8 88

2008-9 (so far) 55

How sad for the baby's parents and family. :sad1: I am guessing that like with all flu though it affects the really young and old the most those that can't fight it as well as if you or me caught it.

I wouldn't let it disrupt my vacation if I were you. They haven't declared a pandemic and our border with Mexico hasn't even been closed yet. Of course all of that might change at any moment, but this is still a very safe country to have your holiday in.

Please come, spend LOTS of money!!

I'm still coming on Saturday!! I have decided to stop watching the news and actually enjoy the build up again!

I think atm it's panic more than the "correct facts".
We go in 6 weeks maybe less.I hope it's all blown over by then if now and it's worse then my common sense head will kick in and I will think about rearranging alternative dates..Until then it's a matter of hoping it's contained very soon.:thumbsup2
I do agree it's very scary, the media are doing a great job in scaring folk rather than stating "true" facts.:headache:

Couldn`t agree more, its all about selling papers and adverts at the minute.
As of yet there`s no real sensible reporting going on.
Thats not to say there`s nothing in it, just that a bit of restraint and balance would be nice.

But as always I expect the media are blowing this up out of proportion.

Claire ;)

:sad2: stories like this sell papers ! pure and simple

The child who died was Mexican, but apparently caught it whilst in Texas, not whilst in Mexico :confused3

Symptoms appeared 4 days after crossing the border according to BBC so doubt it's that clear cut. Nobody's determined the incubation period yet.

We're still going I think but DW is getting nervous.

I had to laugh at the radio one news earlier... Some woman texted in saying she was going to start carrying tissues around with her and would be stockpiling them in case she couldn't leave the house at some point... Whatever makes people feel better I suppose :rolleyes1
Just to put things into perspective a bit (not claiming it to be 100% accurate but it is based on WHO statistics)

My friend was the same she said when I got in the car with her to go to the shops what do you think about this swine flu she's going stocking up on food in case they can't leave the house. I said my theories which as suggest by others earlier the media and govt here are blowing it all out of proportion the UK govt need something to distract everyone from the economy I'm not worrying about it at all not until it becomes anything major.

My mum works NHS and she says today they were given lectures on what to do if cases came in etc however she also said that they all believed there at Liverpool hospital(Aintree) that it was all being blown way out of proportion to what it is.

The newspapers are making me really worried  I know what the facts are, but I'm going to Florida in 11 days to get married, so if it were cancelled it would be devastating!
Anyone have any words of wisdom and encouragement to stop me stressing?

My mum works at a Doctors surgery and they are getting lots of people (about 30 or 40 a day!) phone up for an appointment saying they think they have swine flu. My mum and everyone have been told to ask certain questions -e.g. have you been to mexico recently, have you come into contact with someone who has swine flu, what symptoms do you have. 90% of people dont even have a cold but because of the media coverage they have convinced themselves that they have the disease.

I really wouldnt take much notice of what the media say. Yes the facts are correct but they leave out bits of information and over dramatise everything else.
As i said in my previous post my mum works for the NHS and none of the Doctors where she works thinks there is any problem for her going on our holiday - not even when the cruise was going to be stopping in Cozumel - they just said make sure you follow the standard precautions (wash you hands etc). and you'll be fine!

I know its easier said than done but try not to worry. The one thing i learnt with Disney Weddings is that they have a back up plan for a back up plan! No matter what happens Disney will make your day wonderful! :goodvibes

hi

we are also going out to get married on the 12th, at the risk of sounding flip i flew out 4 days after 9/11 when everyone was cancelling (travel city said it did not include terrorism acts in the small print) so Im not going to let swine flu put me off, you're going to have a great time and congratulations in advance :goodvibes

pinkerbell- the usa havent even closed it borders with mexico so I really wouldnt worry about it!

All the cases outside mexico are mild and there was only a death in usa because the boy was mexican and had just come into the us

i very much doubt they will stop flights to the US

I'm off to the World next week and i had a mini panic this morning (after not being bothered at all by this flu business) i heard the threat level thing increased to a 5 and i thought ...bah thats it then......

I'm now sitting in the middle of uni library with my headphones on listening to Dis Radio and im spinning in my chair..................I'm going to DISNEY WORLD!! NEXT WEEK!!

Dont let this thing which is almost certainly not gonna affect you ruin your holiday/wedding!!

Then just book another one when u get back, justify it by saying the "build up" was ruined by the flu hehe

Take it from an American who lives near WDW. I would stay home if I were you. I live an hour from WDW and I'm staying clear of the parks for now.

WDW is a place where many nationalities vacation together, far different than, say, Grand Canyon National Park or Cedar Point amusement park whose parkgoers are compromised mainly of Americans. Think of all the international airlines that fly into Orlando (and Sanford-mainly from the UK) on any given day--hundreds of people each in plane. Below is a list of all foreign carriers, along with those who code share with American airlines (Air France flights on Delta jets coming to the US from Paris, for example).

This link explains it even better:

US immigration at MCO can clear up to 2,600 international visitors per hour. How many of those people are sick?
